How much do college ratings waiver based on 12M scouting?

Take the HS guy. Your college rankings are going to be way off.

This year in one of my leagues I had a guy named BJ Pierre ranked 5th overall that I got at the 28th pick.

with 20 million college and the guy being 22 years old I had these projections.

Contact: 77
Power: 83
VsL: 97
VsR: 85
Eye: 87

and here is what I got: BJ Pierre

It is very very unlikely that a 22 year old is going to gain 26 points in contact, 27 points VsL, and 19 points VsR, and a 22 year old is supposed to give you the most accurate projections for college.

Take the HS guy, hold on to your butt and hope for the best.

Take the HS guy. 20 million scouting vs 12 million is a huge difference.

Here's the one thing I want to say about scouting, using hockey1984's example. hockey, you probably ranked him on those projections as one of the best pure hitters in the draft, if not the top hitter.
Those projections, one-to-one, apples-to-apples, were him against the other 499 prospects you saw. No one else.

You may be disappointed with what you got, and he may indeed likely never hit his projections, but I'm willing to bet he is still one of the best hitters to come out of that draft class, if not the best. If all the other hitters in the draft class miss their projections by the same amounts, you still got the guy you ranked as a top hitter relative to those other 499 prospects.

His projections made him a perennial all-star. Well, every year you get a ton of guys drafted in the first round of every sport, and everyone thinks or hopes they're getting a perennial all-star.

I'll let you know in a few seasons. :P

That being said, you make a really good point. Because I'm a glutton for punishment I love going back to previous years drafts and seeing if there is anyone I would have taken in the first round that got selected AFTER I took my first round pick (only if its what I scouted. So if I put 20 million into HS I'm not going to be angry because there was a stud college kid that got taken 5 picks after mine)

and I find 8.5 times out of 10 that what damag said is true. The guys taken after my guy are either on par with the player I took or they are worse. (Makes me feel better when I took a guy who ended up being an SP3 but I got him 3rd overall in the draft). There is the occasional miss or I have the occasional flop (hence the other 1.5 times out of 10) but majority of the time, the other players that were taken later then my pick in the draft had their ratings off as much as the player I picked, making them that much worse.

Now we're gonna get the guys complaining about how poor too many drafts are!

Remember in Riley, I think it was my second season in the league, the number one draft pick was Miguel Vazquez. He ended up owning almost all the batting records to date in Riley's history. The number 2 pick ended up in Rule 5. Literally not one other player in that draft was ever anything but a boring vet. It was, in all the seasons I've played, the only one-player draft I can recall.

Yep. The only other player I recognize from that draft is Bubbles Duke and he was picked 15th.

Edit: This is one of those points that a lot of owners have brought up but I don't know what the solution is.

Its tough when an owner says 'I'm in rebuild mode.' or 'I'm on the fence if I should go for it or not' and then decides to put more money into scouting and prospects and either barely loses out on bidding for free agents or decided to let their own walk for Type A and B picks. Then a month later they get the draft list and realize that the draft has 1, maybe 2 usable players and they are picking 18th at best.

Although there is more chance to forget and screw it up, maybe we should see the prospects for the draft right after budget day. The draft would still be on the same date but at least then, for us keeners we can decide if we want to give up a type A pick because the draft sucks or compile more picks because there are 30 or so good players. If nothing else, it gives more time to sort out your draft board if you need it or if you are away on vacation etc. Then maybe just the site gives you an email reminding you the week before that the draft is coming up incase you forgot.

I dunno. I'm open to suggestions for this one. As someone who's favourite part of the game is the draft and uses it as the main vein to build my teams, I'd love to hear other ideas.

Thank you for the advice.
Does anyone run 20M in HS and 20M in College? wonder if that is ever worth it.

I agree that the draft class should be known in conjunction with budget and signing FA - they are interconnected.

I sometimes do 20/20 if I'm starting a rebuild with a low payroll. Especially if I have a few Type A/B free agents that will give me extra draft picks.
