I'm gonna do this because I need a distraction...........but 1st I'm thankful today.
Thankful we still have our Republic and that our Democracy held up to yesterday's assault.
In the spirit of "you are what you eat" and "birds of a feather" I'm also very thankful that I need no apologies, nor share no shame at being (in ANY way!) associated with the vermin and cretins who (in blind support of the largest miscreant in American History---a man not worth my armpit seepage) stormed the Capitol building yesterday and attempted to replace the American Flag with a (likely Made in China) chump MAGA flag.
Someday I hope to find the tolerance to forgive and forget the blindness and stupidity that led so many Americans to support a treasonous Bastard!!
I DO hope I'm clear enough for y'all to understand How I feel this AM!
Now on to fun stuff like arguing music.
I do this as a nod to another caring American who likes lists (Dino).
I don't!
None the less.
Some parameters are needed as I don't remember what the list is supposed to comprise.
This is a list of my TOP ROCK BANDS/ARTISTS
Overall artistry is the #1 priority. Longevity is highly prioritized as is impact, general musicianship. Success has some impact for me but not a huge factor and sales is NOT considered at all. As there are a few artists whose impact was huge but whose careers were cut short I'm making a second list for these bands/artists. (Janis Joplin could be on it, but ISN'T!) lol.
Here goes.
#1. The Beatles ---- C'mon. They changed the WORLD.........mainly with music. Changed how we even view/listen to music. Changed how it was MADE!!
#2. Bob Dylan ----- Not really a rock band of course, but someone who influenced more Rock than (perhaps) anyone but Robert Johnson.
#3. Led Zeppelin ----- Speaking of Robert Johnson and the delta, what duo has been bigger in Rock (sans Macca and Lennon) than Plant and Page. Add in (maybe) the world's best drummer and the virtuosity of John Paul Jones and you can argue that THIS is the most powerful quartet in music History.
#4. Ten Years After ----- Another Blues quartet at their core but much more experimental. Their string of LP's in the early 70's is as strong as anyones!!
#5. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers ---- after Dylan the 1st American entry. Musicianship and quality of output over a LONG length of time warrants TP's inclusion and as a band (his other stuff was awesome, too!) as he WAS a part of the Heartbreakers. America's finest Rock and Roll band.
#6. Fleetwood Mac ----- One of the top 2 or 3 Blues Bands in the world in 1968 and 1969 to today. Their sheer output is unparalleled. Their lesser known LP's are Rock gems (Kilnhouse, Then Play On, etc), their successes are known worldwide and are still good music! $$$$'s generated for the Music BIZ is also unbelievably huge. And that Rhythm section. McVie/Fleetwood, for my money the best EVER (tightest!) bass/drum combo in Rock. RIP Peter Green.
#7. Neil Young/Buffalo Springfield/CSNY, etc.---- How can you have a top Rock list and NOT have Neil on it?? Over 50 years + has anyone produced such a unique and deep catalog of pure unadulterated artistry? From sublime to too far gone (Landing on Water??) this dude can put out a "shelved" album from (like) 1977 in 2020 and it becomes one of the years best releases!! You figure out HOW to list him. I just know He belongs!
#8. The Rolling Stones ---- On the list based on the strength of their 60's and early 70's stuff. And their longevity as a live Rock band. I wouldn't (myself) pay to see them any longer. And as the years rolled on, they've released some massive clunker LP's. Awful stuff really.
#9. Free/Bad Company/Paul Rodgers ---- Kinda like Neil I don't know HOW to list this, but Paul Rodgers may have the finest pure voice in Rock History and certainly his voice provides the soundtrack to classic rock Radio. Long successful artistry over a long career as well.
#10. Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler ----- I think the youngest artist on the list. Hugely influential on other musicians and (save for Mike Campbell and Alvin Lee) maybe the best pure guitar player on the list.
The "JOPLIN" List
#1. Jimi Hendrix ---- Here only because of the scant output.
#2. Creedence Clearwater Revival ---- Swamp Blues/Rock out of California. Who'd of thunk it? But for awhile.....these guys were huge!
#3. The Eagles ----- Musicianship unsurpassed. Great songs. With their pop chops matched by their ability to mine friends like Jackson Browne for writing assistance, this band made a solid but limited output of releases. But without adding Joe Walsh (and to a lesser extent T.B. Schmit) they wouldn't be on any list IMO.
#4 Whiskeytown ------ What could have been if only Mr. Adams would have believed in the band long term? 2 (+) GREAT Releases!!
#5 James Gang/Joe Walsh & Barnstorm ---- Add in all his excellent solo work and his output with The Eagles and you could probably argue that Joe should be in the primary list.
Honorable Mentions
The Allman Brothers Band ---- who knows how good they'd have become if not for a motorcycle accident?
Red Rider ---- No offense meant to Rush, but for my money Red Rider (Tom Cochrane and Ken Greer mainly) was Canada's best rock export since The Guess Who.
2 last items.
No list of mine can mention The Eagles without mentioning POCO.
Formed in 1968 (and still functioning) and always a great live band, their output of quality LP's (and CD's) far exceeds the Eagles in sheer numbers as well as in consistent quality. Considered (along with the Flying Burrito Brothers) the inventors of Country-Rock. If you watch the Eagles big documentary Glenn Frey even acknowledges that The Eagles were just trying to do what POCO had done before them, put musical artistry into a hybrid of Rock energy and Country sensibilities. Over 30 releases and 50 years later they remain hugely influential to the current Americana acts and artists.
Finally, how is it that not a one of us has included The Who on a list of Top Rock and Roll Bands?
Is why I dislike lists!!
