I have to say that I do like the fact that every year of each player must be used. I foresee a future 16x16 variation where the players selected will need 16+ years in order to be nominated (like normal), but only 16 years will be used in the draft. (Maybe the person that nominates the player will also select a 16-consecutive year period to use).

You could also adopt 3day’s suggestion and eliminate their cheapest seasons to get them down to 16.

Maybe we could also find a way not to include the deadball pitchers with the massive salaries and useless 400-inning seasons. I feel like those really skew things, particularly when the nomination process is first-come, first-served. I know everyone still ended up with tons of useless salary, but it will be interesting to see how much the teams that made those nominations end up faring.
