ya can't Full Court Press off misses Topic

This is the only area I have seen where the game strays from reality, and it gives an unfair advantage to teams that press. It is simply not possible to press when your team does not score.

I see an extra 3-4 turnovers per game where a pressing team steals the ball in the backcourt after they missed a shot. Today's game was the coup de grace. I won the tip and they stole the ball in the backcourt . . . OFF THE FREAKING JUMP BALL!! That is just silly.

Anyone who has played or coached will tell you this simple fact -- you can only press off of made baskets. This really needs to be fixed.

We "press" off missed shots as well. Double the ball and everyone else grab the closest guy. This leads to one open but its usually the farthest player.

You can press off missed shots IRL but to brianp's point it's not the most effective strategy. It's more likely you'd attempt to trap coming off a missed shot but it would depend how your offense was set prior to the rebound. I don't know that HD goes that crazy with player positioning, but it's definitely not completely unrealistic for a team to "press" off a missed shot. The team that was on offense simply stays in the backcourt & hounds the ballhandler off the rebounder rather than falling back to the frontcourt and getting set on D.

i always wished there were settings in the vein of with what sol just said, like where you could decide like how crazy to press. probably as part of a man or zone (or both) set i suppose. and maybe you could crank those settings way up and approximate today's fcp but i feel like it should cost you more easy baskets or something. or you could press after made baskets only, or just press in the last 10 minutes if you are down, or whatever... i don't know. i feel like that could be made to be pretty neat, somehow. pipe dream but still!

Exactly I should of called it trapping as that is really what it is. It would be nice to be able to control that but I doubt the engine is that complex. If probally calculates how many steals or turnovers a teams going to get then randomly assigns them.

ya can press off misses - its harder and not as effective

I once coached a youth girls team that were not really very skilled at basketball. We tried, I tried, they tried. The ONE thing we could do was press that season. We couldnt shoot, we could not run plays or a scheme. We were not really good at ball handling or passing. BUT we ran a wicked 1-2-2 full court press that they loved doing. And sometimes after we stole the ball we would actually get the layup to go in.

After a miss it became more of a three quarters press or a trap right at mid court......40 minutes of youth ball "heck" - it was fun

Qhadow! My man! Preach son! We must be kindred souls, or maybe just smarter than everyone else! Can you press on missed shots? Yes you can. Does it work. Absolutely not! At least not at high level basketball. A D1 school; wait let me restate; ANY D1 school would crush any team they play if said team pressed from jump ball to final horn. I have asked for FCP to be removed as a base defense since day 1. No one presses 100% of the time. I mean have you ever been to a 2nd grade Upwards basketball game? Thats what it would look like! Teams run a base defense, be it m2m, any type of zone, or hybrid defenses and they press off makes or situationally. Mods have shot me down again and again and argue that some teams do run FCP on every play of every game. I have challenged them to show me 1 team that does it for 1 game; just 1 game; and has no other base 1/2 court defense, and I’ve yet to receive that example! But I will break the bad news to you now: they don’t care bc they don’t want to tick off coaches who currently run FCP so they won’t change it. So my best advice to you is start treating this as more of an arcade game and less a sim! Also we have WIS FCP Haters Support Group meetings on Wednesday’s at 7pm at Hooters. We have a few drinks, complain about the FCP BS, and never order wings. Only there for the terrible beer selection and “atmosphere”! We feel your pain.

You can absolutely press off missed shots. Happens all the time.
Happens all the time? Do you mean press as in, the one of the defenders trying to pickup the ballhandler? Having played basketball a reasonably high level, (D1, professional overseas), I can't recall ever seeing a team trap off a missed shot. Maybe in youth basketball like fdny mentioned above, but that seems like an exception.

I could be wrong and maybe teams do press off misses. If so, I'd like to see it.

I’ve been griping about this for years to my now former Phelan A10 conference mates. FCP as a base offense where a team traps constantly after makes, misses, and anything in between is as unrealistic as it gets. It literally is my only real complaint with this sim. Obviously a system can always be improved, but this is the only topic that really grinds my gears! Lol

here comes the "i played pro ball" guy.
Lol. Just responding to the 'don't know what the **** I'm talking about' guy :)

Seriously though, I am not aware of teams that have a coordinated press attack off a miss. I can certainly understand a guy here or there picking up the ballhandler full court off a miss (thinking Patrick Beverly here). I've already admitted I could be wrong, so here is your chance to score some points on the 'I played pro ball' guy :)

I run a lot of press, but I could care less either way if they keep it or remove it AS IS. But what isn't a good idea is removing options. Gaining options is what we need. Keep in mind that our fake little sim players aren't literally running up and down the court like we picture in our minds. It's just weighted numbers against weighted number basically. If we go back to the thought of "this game has to be like real life in every way" then we got a ton of changes to make. That's another story.

I'd much rather have 3 defenses to choose from than 2. That's all it comes down to for me. It may be a bit unrealistic in theory, but it's not so far off the path like you are making it seem. If they could tweak the engine so it didn't set up the press after misses, then cool, it would be better. I wouldn't argue against that. But removing it surely isn't the answer. It's still part of basketball.

Topp - I feel like Brokenee is suggesting that pressing still be involved, just not as a base defense. Like, you could run man, zone (which should have 1-3-1 imo), man + press, zone + press. But you couldn't just run press.

Anyway, as much as we like to imagine the possibilities, it feels like this would require a pretty significant tech effort (and thus not part of the regular releases we have been treated with recently). Hopefully Adam keeps prioritizing HD over the other games ;)
