what's the difference between recruiting period 1 and recruiting period 2? and can players sign at any time in-between?
The first recruiting session (commonly RS1) happens during the regular season. When it begins depends on if you’re in a 1x or 2x world, but it always starts during conference play, and wraps up right before the conference tournament. The second session (RS2) happens after the job change period, and before season rollover. The second session is shorter, and is kind of a mad dash.
Players have a signing tendency of early, end of period 1, late, or whenever. They do not sign between sessions, however. Importantly, a player from the D1 pool who has an early or EOP1 tendency will sign with any D1 school who has a scholarship offer and an open spot, provided they do enough to get above moderate consideration. D2 and D3 teams can’t get past moderate on D1 pool recruits in the first session, no matter what they do. This is known as the “red light”. This means that even when a lower division school might be ahead in effort credit, a D1 team can come in on an early or EOP1 recruit at the end of the first session, and take the recruit with no battle. This will sometimes look like the D1 school is listed as “high” instead of “very high” in the considering list. D3 teams are behind the red light on D1 pool recruits until the final 24 hours of the RS2, and the same one-division red light until the start of RS2 on D2 pool recruits.
