Final considering odds were 50-50. My Augustana team was the D2 school, in for
Kenny Cullens.
Interesting chain of events here. Importantly, Cullens was ineligible up until right before RS2 started. Since I run a FB/press team, I didn’t want to risk him signing with me in the second session before he became eligible, which is why I waited on the scholarship. There was a D3 coach on him from the start who invested a bit, but no D1 humans until the cycle prior to RS2. So there was never any compelling reason for me to offer a scholarship in the first session; I figured I could put off a decision until he became eligible, which is what I did.
Once he became eligible, a trio of D1 coaches popped up in the first couple cycles of RS2, so I quickly bumped that promise up and offered the start. I actually forgot to offer the scholarship right away (whoops) but that wouldn’t have mattered because no one would have been able to put enough effort in to have offered him right away anyway. Eastern Michigan ended up being the team going after him hard, and since it wasn’t a new coach with reloaded resources, I was less worried than I probably should have been. I had already spent most of my resources fighting off Memphis for another recruit, needing to hold them at moderate because he was an early guy. Cullens frustratingly waited until the 4th cycle to sign, giving Eastern Michigan time to get all the effort in. When I saw the odds, my first thought was that they didn’t have many visits to do, and had gotten to even on promises and AP, and maybe a visit. Turns out it was the opposite, he had resources to do lots of visits, but had intended to try to redshirt the player, so didn’t want to offer any promises, which makes sense, because he’d be a very bad D1 player this season (as it is, starting him and playing him close to 20 minutes in D2 is going to hurt). If they had been willing to offer even 10 minutes, I think, they probably overwhelm me with that number of visits. Certainly with 15 minutes.
My eyeball math likely would have been about the same as cubbie here. I think (at least in part) this probably reflects the recent change in scholarship value for D1 pool recruits, a D2 scholarship isn’t quite as valuable as it used to be for D1 pool players.
