I just took the Stanford job in Iba and got a 1/3 new coach penalty, pushing our prestige down from A+ to A... I don’t understand How this happens given that I am coming off of a title game appearance!

Do all new coaches get this penalty?

When the prestige is high enough (I'm sure there's a threshold, but I don't know what it is), yes, all coaches get 1/3 of a letter grade prestige reduction when taking over a new team.

when I took over UCLA/Allen I'm pretty sure the school prestige got a bump from A- to A.
This was before the draft so I don't think it had anything to do with the couple upcoming first round draft picks. I think the draft bump occurs when the season rolls over

I know for sure when I got Arizona/Rupp the prestige bumped from C+ to B-, quickly to go back to C+ after a 9-19 season.

Interesting....I've never experienced or heard of getting a prestige bump before when taking over a new program. I should have mentioned, I'm fairly certain I've also experienced 1/3 of a letter grade prestige drop at D2 and D3 before when taking over an A+ program. It doesn't happen all the time though, which is the confusing part.

the new coach bump/penalty i believe works the same, an essentially immediate and one time increase or drop based on the coach's resume, up to 1/3rd grade. i'm guessing in cub's case maybe the rest of his last 10 weren't so hot? but if so... who knows.

i've taken over a few programs with a+ prestige but never had one drop, its definitely not true that there is a threshold after which all coaches will have a drop.

Yea I've gotten a bump almost every time. I actually got a bump when I took over D1 Kansas (was at B+) and I had never set foot in D1 in that world. I came straight from an elite D2 gig at Virginia St. Once I was hired Kansas jumped from B+ to A-.

I think there has to be some randomness to it. Especially in Cubs example

i don't know if it has to have randomness. i don't really think it does, but maybe. cub has 1 title game, but then 2 2nd rounds, 3 1st rounds, and 4 no post seasons over the 10 year period. i am not sure that is an a+ caliber resume, his coach prestige could easily be less than a+ based on his last 10. plus he doesn't have championships in that world to contribute to the resume (from prior to 10 years).
