What is HD’s “White Whale”? Topic

My latest, and likely last D3 title was Triangle with a HCP/zone combo defense. Combo defense was my white whale for a long time, but I’m getting a little bored with them, after reaching my goal of a title at all 3 levels with it. I have more FB/P teams now.

Win a D1 National Championship running fastbreak/FCP and only recruit guys from Mexico and Canada.

That could be impression and I haven't seen that before...

HD’s white whale, build your own roster at every level and win. No
piggybacking other users.

i don't know if I'd call it a white whale as I believe there are a few coaches who've done it, but it's definitely a good goalpost to aim for.

"Doing it" is one thing. "Making a career out of it" was more along the lines of what beach was trying to say

ab has shown he can win with his own players. he just likes winning with others' more, apparently.

even back when i was a young coach, like, with no accomplishments or barely any... even back then, i sometimes felt more proud doing well with someone else's players. why? because usually they left a dumpster fire with little hope of success, and i was able to make it work. i felt like i was able to see the potential where they could not, and that seemed pretty cool. its like when you are dealt a **** hand in cards and absolutely kill it - there's nothing better! plus, i was a pretty decent recruiter after 1 season, so i almost always felt i could have done better recruiting myself (which was affirmatively demonstrated shortly thereafter). winning with the other dude's players felt like winning with one hand tied behind my back.

bottom line, there's valid reasons to enjoy coaching other folks' players, and its a legitimate challenge. i get ab does it mostly with good teams that you guys think anyone could win with, but it just seems so... pointless, i guess, to hold that against him. coaching is coaching. you don't like his style... just beat him. maybe that's the problem. most of those who take chip shots at him, in truth, can't hold a candle coaching wise. i guess i'll just state the obvious - if you think he's beating you because he cherry picks teams, you are wrong. frankly, his approach isn't even competitive from a dynasty building standpoint, the best coaches with their best dynasties would generally not even consider his teams to be real competition... regarding them with something akin to amusement. frankly, he's beating you guys with 1 hand tied behind his back

i know nobody is really giving him too hard a time here, i just wanted to stir the pot a bit i guess?

I mean, I can actually start recruiting like I used to, if you guys want that. Haha. The irony is that these are often teams whose own coaches thought they couldn’t win, which is why they went somewhere else. I do get a hell of a kick out of winning with others’ guys: it’s probably a feeling akin to going to the thrift store and finding a sweet outfit that somebody else was going to throw away.

And let’s not even get started on how many of you share scouting data with each other at the lower levels, but I can go back to recruiting the best team in the country. Isoroku Yamamoto had a little quote on that

I recruited here, at all, not for the last 3 seasons. Take a look

ab definitely cherry picks. He does the same thing in HBD. This is undeniable. Saying that, he's still very good at both games. 27 championships here and however many 1000's of world series he's probably won there by now is impressive and you have to know what you're doing to win them. But his resume would definitely be more impressive if he took over rebuilds and built them up instead of taking over teams that are already solid and winning with them.

“It’s a legitimate challenge.”

it’s not.

“he’s beating you with one hand tied behind his back”

he’s not. His rosters that others built for him are always loaded.

He can do what he wants, but let’s not act like he’s some genius because he can cherry pick a team and set a game plan.

Has anyone built a team with 80+ PER at every position? It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but don’t think there are enough bigs out there that can shoot.
