What is HD’s “White Whale”? Topic

Has anyone built a team with 80+ PER at every position? It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but don’t think there are enough bigs out there that can shoot.
i'm curious what you'd be looking to get out of such a scheme?

i don't know if its been done, but i imagine it would not go very well. i tried pretty hard to advance a 4-guard lineup scheme under press and was unsuccessful. i'm sure someone could build a good program with it or whatever, that sort of thing, but it was always meaningfully worse than equally talented, more balanced lineups, for me. with crappier teams especially fb/fcp, i do find that small ball route to be more viable, like 4 guard or 3 guard sf, i have definitely gotten good mileage from that from low prestige d1 type of situations. but its not a good strategy for high end teams. anyway, i had thought the extra TOs generated at the 4 would pay for the reb, but if you have good TO generation from the 1-3 already, you just don't get much more. and then the extra per scoring, i found i was just spreading it around, but it wasn't really raising the quality.

also my opinion of per bigs is poor. i think using a bit of 3pt scoring in your bigs can help offset lack of 3pt scoring on the team in general, and sometimes that can be a valuable strategy really. but when you face 3pt defenses and quality teams, 3pt scoring bigs just aren't that efficient, and now they take all those pesky long 2s which are just really bad under HD. so combining them with quality per scoring guards just doesn't make sense IMO.

Win a D1 National Championship running fastbreak/FCP and only recruit guys from Mexico and Canada.

That could be impression and I haven't seen that before...
I like this.
Something I am currently pursuing (though only half-heartedly if we are being honest) is to have a Romanian NPOY at Transylvania. Surely there are some other fun combos like this.

ab has shown he can win with his own players. he just likes winning with others' more, apparently.

even back when i was a young coach, like, with no accomplishments or barely any... even back then, i sometimes felt more proud doing well with someone else's players. why? because usually they left a dumpster fire with little hope of success, and i was able to make it work. i felt like i was able to see the potential where they could not, and that seemed pretty cool. its like when you are dealt a **** hand in cards and absolutely kill it - there's nothing better! plus, i was a pretty decent recruiter after 1 season, so i almost always felt i could have done better recruiting myself (which was affirmatively demonstrated shortly thereafter). winning with the other dude's players felt like winning with one hand tied behind my back.

bottom line, there's valid reasons to enjoy coaching other folks' players, and its a legitimate challenge. i get ab does it mostly with good teams that you guys think anyone could win with, but it just seems so... pointless, i guess, to hold that against him. coaching is coaching. you don't like his style... just beat him. maybe that's the problem. most of those who take chip shots at him, in truth, can't hold a candle coaching wise. i guess i'll just state the obvious - if you think he's beating you because he cherry picks teams, you are wrong. frankly, his approach isn't even competitive from a dynasty building standpoint, the best coaches with their best dynasties would generally not even consider his teams to be real competition... regarding them with something akin to amusement. frankly, he's beating you guys with 1 hand tied behind his back
I just clarified the comment before mine. Nothing more.

But ab90 saying people share scouting info in lower levels, how the hell would he know that? Haha. And if he knows, PLEASE report it. If people are sharing scouting info, that's terrible. I don't understand why anyone would do this. Are we that desperate to win at a game? I hope he's just saying that to stir the pot as well.

Hoops Dynasty – College Basketball Sim Games - Team Profile

I recruited here, at all, not for the last 3 seasons. Take a look
Oh look another cherry picked team

When was the last team to win a natty in lower divisions with triangle/zone?
I did it. CSU, San Bernardino, Tarkanian, Season 150.

You can do a variation of what I'm doing. Take a team that's never so much as won a NT game (there's some in every world . . . pick the one that has the worst overall record since the beginning of HD), and bring home a national championship.
For me, WVU has never won a NT in real life and I don't think I've ever seen them win one in any of the worlds I've been in. Eventually that'll be my white whale.

And if I pull that one off I'll try to win a second but with only Canadian kids on my team.

This year I thought I might have a shot at winning a NT with no SR's on my team. But MFMMyers clobbered me in the sweet 16.

I've always thought it would be fun to try to have a respectable team with an entire roster of bald dudes. "Let's win one for the clipper!"

Dang, ab90 really does live rent-free in some of your heads and it doesn't need to be like that. I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of his and I think I even previously reported him for something he did on the forums (I actually don't even recall what honestly) to give preface to my opinion of him. But here is a thread that's supposed to be about "white whales" and fun but people want to attack the person who created the thread because they don't agree with his coaching approach. Like come on, there's some good ideas above that are funny and interesting. Let's interact positively!

We have successful veteran coaches - venturing the best of all time type coaches or are the best coaches of all time - saying what he's doing is far from easy. But the coaches with 15-25 seasons total and a combined 0 NCs between them want to chime in to say the elite coaches are wrong and discredit the coach with 25+ championships. You don't need to sidetrack threads that ab90 posts in to get a little jab that discredits his accomplishments (that I'm positive y'all couldn't achieve given the same circumstances or feel free to prove me wrong). I'm sure he's dealt with worse criticism in the past so you're not going to hurt his feelings so stop ruining the fun threads. Let's keep positive!
Since you want to bring up experience, I haven’t played in years, but I’ve won a national championship in my 5th season of a cherry picked team (see CSU - LA in Naismith). Under the profile Trojan4309 which I still use as well. I was also 16 when I did it. Like I said, it’s really not that hard to cherry pick a team, set a depth chart, and recruit with A+ prestige.

so I’m not sure why you’re so positive an inexperienced player couldn’t do it.

white whale: win a D2 (or D3) championship with all D2 recruits.

He’s an idiot who does nothing but cherry pick top teams and then thinks he’s the best. Anyone can do what he does

It was fun knocking this team out of the NT.

Other white whales I keep thinking about that have nothing to do with team success:

Recruit a kid with my name
Recruit a kid from the high school I want to (even harder because I live in Canada. Also hard because I have no idea if the HS's are real or just randomly generated names)
Recruit a kid with my name from the HS I went to.

The high schools are definitely real.

Recruited a player from my High School...Greenville Senior High in Greenville, Oh CHECK
Recruited a player with my last name...my last name is unique. Like, so unique that it you ever run into someone with it we're related.
I haven't recruited a player with my last name but I have two players in Knight that have my last name...thanks going out to the CS reps that did me a solid several years back.
I'm trying to recruit all South Dakota players on my USD team as well.
