What Was Your Biggest Mistake as an Early Coach? Topic

Title speaks for itself, thought this topic would both be funny and informative for new guys (and guys like me who are basically new again lol).

I'll start.... So when I first started having some success with Hoops Dynasty, I still felt like my teams were constantly underperforming. I'm talking about clear-cut NT teams failing to make it, Sweet 16 type talent getting bounced in the first round, you get it. This ran all the way into the first season of Knight where I picked out a solid team but only managed to go around 500 because for SOME reason, I couldn't get the most out of my talent.

Turns out for YEARS I had kept my fatigue settings on "Playing Time" instead of the settings that actually work and not only that, I had guys playing way too many minutes. The second I changed over to fatigue, I went from a completely average coach to one who was able to turn things around despite no NT year 1 and become the first coach of Michigan State in Knight. Still think about how many seasons I wasted lol

My first season, I blew all my RS1 scouting money on D3 prospects. I was able to come away with one gem (https://www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx?tid=0&pid=4963246), and was able to pick up a decent D2 point guard (https://www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx?tid=0&pid=4963249) after cutting some guys to start RS2, but that waste of scouting money made it take 4 seasons to get to an NT when it could've taken 2-3.

playing fastbreak. new coaches should steer clear! probably motion is the best bet.

Not a new coach mistake... But you know how many times I've gone for the home visit bomb to snipe a guy and sent 20HVs, 1CV + promises but forgot to send the scholly offer?

Too many damn times.

I don't even remember what HD was like when I first started playing in 2005. But when I came back after 3.0, I really just wanted to run a flex offense with a ton of speed, shooting, and ball skills. Despite knowing that athleticism and defense were still pretty important, I probably didn't give them the attention that was necessary to be successful.

I'm pretty sure I've made this mistake at least three or four times. You would think I would remember to double check at this point.

Benis lives off the sneak bomb. I love the guy! But I love seeing this happen more! Haha

My biggest mistake, was not grasping that you can recruit D1 kids at D2 and D3. And I feel like as a new coach you probably wouldn't ever think to be that on your own. You have to be told, or just watch and see why you're peers are so much better than you, yet you don't see them along the recruiting trail ever. Hmmmm why's that?

Not paying much attention to stamina.

Not giving my players off days. Now, a few times each season I'll go into the practice minutes tab and set everything to zero for the night. The team usually comes out sharp the next game.

^^ this

Definitely especially on the high end. Realizing that low STA is not only a valid reason to not recruit someone, but high STA is also a valid reason to recruit someone.

Is this a thing that a lot of coaches do? Or is this just something you have noticed?

Definitely the importance of stamina and not just when discussing fastbreak/press.

Getting fixated on players in recruiting and not knowing when to move on.

Not reading the guides soon enough.
