Recruit this player? Topic

Would you recruit this player for your DIII team? My thoughts: He's going to be elite BH and P, great speed and will be an outstanding perimeter shooter. He has bad athleticism, but may be able to get into the 30's which is serviceable. The main problems are he's far below anyone I would want to sign defensively; to compound that his WE is bad so it will take a while to reach potential. At this point I'm saying no, but what do you think? Would the positives outweigh the negatives for you?

Can't see his potentials, but a low WE, Low Def. and Low ATH is three strikes and yer out for me.

Thanks TRrrr! BH and P are Green, ATH is Blue, DEF is Black. PER and SP are Yellow

At D3, if the player is basically free (if you can sign him with AP and a scholarship) and you don’t have to play him much until he’s a junior, that guy can have some value (assuming you don’t play press - don’t touch that guy if you play press). He’ll end up an excellent D3 scorer as an upperclassman, borderline elite, but he will get scored on a lot and will always be in foul trouble, and that will limit his overall value.

Once he has good IQ, it won’t be as bad, he could probably get 16+ per game really efficiently in like 15 minutes off the bench. If you set your depth chart such that he’s coming in at multiple positions, it makes it tougher for opponents to target him.

He’d never be my first choice, but I’d probably throw him some early AP and keep an eye on him in case some main targets fall through and he stays cheap.

He’s a career backup PG in my book. I wouldn’t have a problem signing and playing him. I am with shoe, except I think he score as a freshman and sophomores too!

Dropping his numbers in my spreadsheet to project him out . . . if I look at his projected cores, I see a solid D3 player, even with a low WE. But I look at his DEF and ATH, and think there's gotta be better options out there.

I'm gonna go the other direction.... personally, I'd love to recruit that player at D3! "Love" has exceptions. If I was press I'd target him as i would any other player. If I was zone, I'd still consider. If I was M2M, only then would I begin to agree with what the others are saying.

I got to a point in my career where I stopped valuing DEF rating in press, because I just never really saw terrible results while having low DEF. His ATH will definitely be 30 and has the small chance to actually reach 40. Depends if you start him and if that blue is the highest blue (very unlikely. But possible). I'm also not a low WE hater like some coaches. I have no problem with 28 WE and I dont blink when I see it.

He will score pretty good after some IQ development. And the main part of my view is that I actually "want" ONE of those guys on my teams. Can't have a team full of them. But one is fine!

this imgur is of a similar player I always share when these players get discussed. He's better than your guy obviously. But it's also D2. They are very similar in player type and would play the same role essentially. The last pic of the bunch shows he's the 3rd leading scorer in school history, on a team that could arguably be the best D2 team in Wooden over the past 20 or 30 seasons

Love him. im a huge ATH/DE guy but I mean look at that spd/per/bh/pa. He can score and shoot well his SO/JR/SR years. Agree that the WE is an issue. You should start him 4 years to maximize.

As a back up SG he would be dynamite.

In DIII I don’t even think twice about a guy like that so long as I don’t have to give him promises. Have him come off the bench for 15 points in 15 minutes plus 3-5 assists. That is a great role player. Especially if you need a deep bench.

reminds me of a better version of Jeffery McKinstry on my DIII team.

don’t know if I’d start but it’s nice to have a high powered offence off the bench.

With man, he’s easier to hide on the bench, rotating between positions. In a press, none of that will matter. His fouls are going to be high in any case, but minutes are limited even further in a press. Just don’t see as much value, unless your team is bereft of perimeter scoring.

And since the game doesn’t track +/- for us, of course you won’t easily see how much damage his bad defense does, but it’s there.

I do like him for this team, *if* he’s not costing visits, so they can invest in other more well rounded options.

man this guy is extreme! i am all for sacrificing whatever you need to sacrifice for your first couple good scorers, in general. i would not think the best d3 teams would be super interested, because they can probably get plenty of per without giving up quite so much? but i think lots of other folks turn up their noses at these guys and are wrong to do so, whether its d3 or d1. if you are going to have good scoring without this dude, then he's not the best fit, but if not, he's probably a great addition.

in general, he meets the two strengths test (per scoring, bh/pass for pg or sg). almost all players who meet my two strength test are suitable starters on national championship teams. the test doesn't really do very well in accommodating extreme weaknesses, so i don't think he's actually that good, but in general, i can't imagine recruiting a guy like this is going to be a big mistake. he's at least a great backup pg. i suspect he's a better starting pg than most folks have, too?

i'd probably maintain those statements for any defense. if you run triangle though... i don't know. then i'm looking at him more for SG and his value drops off considerably.

I had a little better version of this guy at Stevens Tech a while back. Much better WE, more athletic, a little better shooter, and better starting stamina. He was 2-time 1st team All-American, 3-time CPOY, and NPOY as a senior. It helped that he took a redshirt, so had very high IQ by Junior year. I played a zone/press combo.

While he was a ton of fun to coach, and though the rest of the team was very solid, the team never got past the S16 with him on board. He was an insanely efficient scorer, no doubt. The problem was, other teams scored much more efficiently than normal with him on the floor as well. You can only do so much to mitigate that.

I like these type of guys in D3 as long as the rest of the team can make up for the defensive hit. Carl Buck (imgur) came off the bench for me as a JR and averaged 14pts in 13 minutes for a championship team running press. I balanced him out with a starting PG that had high ath/def (for d3) so that it would be a little tougher for an opponent to attack that position.

Thanks for the advice guys. The DI and DII teams have been very greedy in snatching up all the players with any good PER and leaving us scraps. I run Motion and Man. I will say the he's a very intriguing prospect to say the least.
