1ST ROUND PICK DOESN'T SIGN Topic

I have the 1st pick in an upcoming draft. He is saying that he probably wont sign. If I draft this player and he doesn't sign and I offer what he wants, what will be my compensation the next season?

You'll get a 1st round compensation pick next season, one spot lower than this year's draft pick.

Just in case you aren't aware, here's some good draft tips for hard to sign guys:

1. Save the prospect negotiation message. Never delete those, it's the only way to get back to the negotiation page after they decline an offer.
2. If you really want him, re-offer the same contract demand over and over again every time he declines (never offer more than they ask, it doesn't help). You'll get something like three or four attempts to get him to bite before the season ends since they take so dang long to decide. I've only had one or two "prob won't sign" guys hold out until the end of the season.
3. Never withdraw your offer if you want that comp pick. You need to see the red "X" next to their name on the draft results page (as opposed to the [-] symbol showing that YOU withdrew the offer).

Thank you for the reply. I did draft the guy who said he wont sign. He's wanting $8 million to sign. I will just sit back and offer what he wants and wait

Just make sure that if he comes back and ups his demands, don't do anything. Just leave your original offer on the table. You don't have to, and don't want to, agree to his new demands. Just leave your offer alone, and he will eventually flat out reject it, and you will get your comp pick.

Similar situation-I’m locking up $8mil in potential IFA money to do this though. The question: my 1st rounder hasn’t rejected his offer yet but when he does, can I use the $8mil on IFAs?

Yes the money goes back into your prospect budget

I should know this by now but it rarely happens to me. So my first-round pick wasn't sure he'd sign. Mama came back and said he'd decided to sign after all, for an increased price. I have a blue/gray x next to him, not a red one. So if I do nothing.....I'll still get a comp pick next season? Or do I have to see/do something involving the red x?

If your initial offer met his demand and he turned it down - asking for the increase counts - you are now eligible for the comp pick.

I had Player Profile: Taylor Quackenbush - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports #1 on my draft board last season. I grabbed him with the #22 pick. I think he slid so far because he said he was not going to sign. I figured, "What the heck?" He rejected my first 7 offers, finally signing in the AM of the potential last day of the World Series. Make sure you keep the prospect negotiations message. He eventually signed for the amount he first wanted after declining his draft slot amount.

Obviously, he had no growth last season at all. We're 50 some games into this season and he has put on 4 Contact points, 4 for both Splits and 3 for eye.

At that rate he puts on 12, 12 and 9 this season....about double what I would expect. It's as if he's making up for the lost developmental time last season. Will see if it continues.

My $16M HS Scouting put him at 85-87-98-87-86 with the bat and 58-71-81 on the catching defensive side. Interestingly...that's still the same projection I see for him.

Any of you have experience with someone that signs so late they get no bump in pts for the year they were drafted? Do they make up for that in the subsequent year?

My experience is they do make it up and develop just fine.
