(72 - 96) 1989 Larry Anderson
as a Sox fan, I still dont hate that trade.
Bagwell wasnt considered a great prospect. The Sox had Boggs, Tim Naehring, Scott Cooper, and Mo Vaughn all ahead of him. Sabermetrics wasnt a thing yet.
They thought they would have Anderson at least for another season. Something happened in the offseason that made him a free-agent.
They were going for it. They rarely had a good-great pitching staff in the late 80's and in 90 they did. Things were clicking, Reardon got hurt, and they needed one more arm.
yeah, hindsight sucks. Anderson left as a free agent, and bagwell yada yada yada.
12 yr old me was more aghast that lou gorman didnt want to trade for willie mcgee; "where would we play him" I'd find room for a switch hitting .330 hitter, who could still field and still run. Mcgee/Burks/Brunansky with Greenwell at DH sounded pretty good to me
