By the way, anybody else here who is/was a basketball official? I did basketball for 17 years and I was an umpire for 26 years. Retired after the 2021 high school season. I umpired somewhere between 3500 and 4000 games in my career. Did 4 county finals including one on the plate. Did around 80 state tournament games. Ran a huge men's league for several years. We had over 80 teams at one point, 5 different levels of play. I'm in the Hall of Fame of that Men's League as a league official / umpire.

I refed football and basketball for the intramural sports department @ U of L in college. Does that count?
Somewhat, but you never had any training or rules classes I guess. Just kinda winged it?
No I took a rules class in college. Its the only way you were allowed to actually referee the games. I got a C in the class though bc screw baseball. Those rules are foreign concepts to me!
Basketball and Football I still have down pat.
Problem is now my family calls me all the time when a call in a game is questionable to get my opinion lol

I am really strong on the baseball rules. Not so much on the basketball rules. I did not start with baskets until I was almost 40, so I mostly did girls games when I had varsity games. Never got to the level in baskets that I did in baseball, so I was never as interested in basketball rules as much. I worked lots of good men's baseball leagues in the summers, occasionally with former major leaguers like Jeff Bittiger and Paul Mirabella.

I worked games with about a dozen high schoolers that later played in the majors. like Rick Porcello, Hector Santiago, The guy Alex Reyes who was the Cards closer last year, Jack Egbert, Vin Mizarro, and Rob Segiden.

I would love to hear more about your induction to that men's league hall of fame that you mentioned earlier. Was there a ceremony?

A very small one at a field, after an all star game or something. I have a plaque here on the wall, it was 2003. I also played in 2 Hall of Fame games when I was like 44 or 45 with the hall of fame players. We played a regular team of young guys. They looked at all of us older guys and thought they'd beat us. We won like 17-2.

In the first game I got to play 2B because the hall of fame 2Bman was not there. Had 4 assists and no errors, and would have started a 4-6-3 DP, but the SS made a bad throw to first. The second year I only batted. In the 2 games I went 2 for 7 with a walk. So my slash was .286/.375/.286. an OPS of .661. Scored a couple of runs. Was batting last (which was like 11th or 12th) both games since I was the only non player on the team. First time I actually played a real baseball game with umpires and everything since I was like 18 or something. Played some softball, but that's not the same.

By the way, one of the hall of fame players was Doug Van Horn, former NFL lineman from Ohio State. Biggest hands I've ever shook with. He was a monster, big lefty hitter who threw righty. He was playing 3B in the game I played 2B. When we threw the ball around after a strikeout he almost broke my hand with ridiculously hard throws around the infield. In a famous league incident Doug once hit a HR deep to RF where there was a parking lot, and broke his own windshield.

He later became an umpire and I helped train him. In the NFL He was in that game with Pisarcik when the Giants blew a playoff spot by not just kneeling down on the final play of a game against the Eagles. He did not know what was happening on the play right away because he was lying on the ground after his block. It was Herm Edwards who scooped up the fumble and took it to the house.

What if I took UCLA but promised to mismanage the team?

How about this. You get UCLA, but I pick your roster.

You will have undoubtedly forgot that Kareem played there as you feverishly search for "Alcindor, Lew."

I appreciate the selfless campaign wanting UCLA in the league. It will happen if the league is to filled. Savoy is weakening on this. We all know that if it should it ultimately beat the ban, it belongs to me, the first with the foresight to claim it.

So there.

My printer/scanner is down, but when I get it back I will scan in the hall of fame plaque and post it here.

Just got this SM from a long time player. Not saying who.

I wanted to send you a message, privately, because I don't like to and don't want to get caught up in all of the BS that is going on with all of the posts in your college forum. I am not sure why a few of the guys, more the longer term players, are giving you such a hard time. They seem to have some very cliquesh behavior and don't like to let new folks in, especially when they kind of stand out - such as you.

With all that said, I appreciate new players, because that is what we need if the SIM basketball is going to survive and even thrive. I like your energy and enthusiasm as well and it is welcomed ( at least by me it is).

I also think there is much for you to learn about SIM basketball and this WIS basketball community. Certain guys take advantage of new players and exploit their lack of knowledge instead of helping to educate them. Just a word of caution to beware of them. Instead of educating they see new players as a chance to get an easy championship or two.

I do believe you are off in some of your assessments in the college league, but that is okay as you are just beginning, learning, and after all it is your league. If I can help in any way, let me know.

Good luck,

I'm like 95% certain this is BS - I think you overdid it with the veterans taking advantage bit since the NBAsim veterans are largely helpful and you're the one who was shitting all over Ash's thread which addresses that very point - if you're wondering that was when you overplayed your hand

But nice try - extra points for penmanship at least?

Only 9 minutes later and a response already!

This Karl Malone whiner must be checking this thread every 15 minutes.

It's a real message that came in today. Besides, if the guy who sent it comes in and confirms it, you'd just bash him then. Go back to your mommy's basement and start working on your next team.
