Met him once while covering Class A baseball in the 1990s. He was a coach for the opposing team, and I was making my way from the field to their clubhouse to interview someone. There was a short airless hallway in between, and there was Patek sucking everything he could out of a cigarette. Tobacco was of course banned in the minor leagues, but I guess no one wanted to argue with Patek. You figure anyone who made it at his size is probably a pretty tough customer.

Imagine, carving out a 14-year career with his lifetime numbers of .242 / .309 / .324. His best offensive season was 1971, where we went .267 / .323 / .371 and he finished 6th in MVP that year (one spot ahead of '71 Murcer). Unreal.
