Coming off a good regular season in v.2, with a very disappointing sweep (3 1-run losses, 2 lost by the pen) in the playoffs. Hopefully we can put together another playoff caliber team. Thinking I will try to add offense a little earlier. Not sure how I'm gonna manage the $100m cap for the first 24 rds; guess we'll figure it out as we go.
Round 1.4 - 1964 Sandy Koufax - SP3
Have now had 2 early picks and 1 late pick through 3 versions. Not really sure which I like better. Struggling to get a quick handle on the buckets with years as the variable instead of franchises, I know that I'd like a little more offense early, but not in rd 1. Looking for my staff ace, but that doesn't doom me to the bottom of the salary pool forever. I love 64 Horlen, as he always performs well for me, but with him gone I'm gonna settle for 64 Koufax. Kept it under 10m for my ace -- good job.
Round 2.18 - 1990 Roger Clemens - SP4
Had a lot of guys I went back and forth on. Decided I want my 2nd SP now, then transition to offense. Figured I was going to have to spend a little more at SP1 & SP2 if I'm going to get quality...but I'm not sure that I want to commit the salary to that strategy. Settling on Clemens and will see what my SP1 & SP2 options look like after we get some hitters.
Round 3.19 - 1989 Wade Boggs - 3B
Gotta start getting hitters. Looked at both corner spots and what my OF options were going to be...and a brief look at SS I found that there wasn't going to be a lot of elite defenders there and a dearth of guys that can hit. 1982 Robin Yount sticks out because the 82 options seem awful -- but he is a righty and I can't make my first hitter a righty. Again, thinking I had to stay under 100m for 24 picks, I decided to punt a little defense to get a top of the order BA and OBP guy.
Round 4.19 - 1982 Robin Yount - SS
Welp, still in the bottom third of the draft order is making me a little nervous that I'm adding too much salary early. Decided I want a SS that can hit, as there will be lots of ways to add various types of offense in the OF and at 1B. C'mon on down Robin -- (and our draft order spot)
Round 5.18 - 1965 Billy Williams - OF1
A cursory look of the SP1 and SP2 spots says I'm ok there and need to continue to add offense. Looking at 79 Molitor and 66 Rose heading into the round, along with 86 Mattingly -- Rose goes early in the round, Molitor goes the pick before me, and Mattingly, well this is when I started looking at the bonus pools and realized 85 and 86 would be 2 years I really wanted to keep open, as they provided 4 really quality options for rd 25, though I'm not sure how I'm going to get into that position from where I am salary wise at this point. Decided there were a couple 1B I liked and so lets get my OF1 without breaking the bank. Billy Williams brings good thump from a time where pitching ruled.
Round 6.18 - 1963 Carl Yastrzemski - OF2
And there go the 1B -- 2 Mattinglys, Cepeda, and Rose. Guess I will pivot and fill another bat in the OF. The other 86 player I considered, Tony Gwynn, has left the OF2 pool...maybe that's a good thing so I'm not tempted here to take him. Yastrzemski adds a solid LH bat to the order and if my 1-4 is Boggs, Yaz, Yount, Williams, well I've done worse. Would love to find a true leadoff/CF to put in front of those 4.
Round 7.18 - 1969 Boog Powell - 1B
Being cost conscious, I have been referencing the 86 squad I submitted to help with salary distribution and knowing I have 1, maybe 2 expensive SPs left to take, plus a bullpen to build, the search has narrowed by eliminating any top $ options from the remaining offensive buckets. Starting to get a little handle on the years and with a commitment to offense underway, lets add another OBS+ of >130 at 1B. Having narrowed by SP1 and SP2 options, I'm definitely going to take 1987 Bob Welch, I think I can nab my 1B to lengthen the lineup and start planning where I can afford to save money. (2B looking likely; C too)
Round 8.17 - 1975 Jim Palmer - SP1
First time I really was able to look into how we are going to finish our lineup and rotation -- SP1, with Welch locked in later as my SP2, looks like I am going to have to spend a little to end up with someone useful. (edit: Had I figured out the salary rules at this point, I'd likely have tried to find a way to spend 1-1.5m less and work on being a position to get 86 Mike Scott) After carefully looking over what was left, I decided I couldn't wait here and Palmer was a solid choice to spend up a little on.
Round 9.22 - 1978 Wayne Garrett - Bench4
(post draft note for reference: Going into this rd, I was 11m behind Schwarze whom would ultimately break my rd 25 heart) Woah, pick 22...ok...we gotta punt a round to move up some. Not expecting to need a ton from my bench, let's find someone cheap, but that will provide quality PAs. 1978 looks like a year I'm not too interested in and Wayne Garrett comes in at .333/.432 with a nearly 130ops+ for just 533k. Sold.
Round 10.16 - 1970 Jack Aker - RP2
Well, our highest spot since rd 1. Need to keep moving up, but in a responsible way. Bullpen is a good spot to look at. RP1 & RP2 figure to be loaded with high cost guys -- I need someone who can get outs but doesn't cost an arm and a leg. HR/9 is a solid .39 and while nothing flashy, solid numbers in other important areas. At barely 2m, I'm sold, even if he isn't the kind of shutdown arm I'd usually target first.
Round 11.9 - 1984 Julio Solano - RP4
How in the world is 3day still at just 50m? Did he use like a 30% off discount card or something? Anyways...up to 9th...1 more bullpen pick here might help solidify us towards the top of the order for a while. I think I'm going to end up with 1980 Carlton Fisk at C and 1976 Dave Cash at 2B because I just can't justify spending on anything else remaining. Putting them in the rd 23 & 24 slots, with adjustments to be made if salary/years allow. Julio Solano...I guessed right back when I took Garrett in thinking Solano's BB/9 would keep him from being added. He will likely have some adventures, but everything else about him is likeable, including a ERC+ of 206. At 1.75m, he fits perfectly.
Round 12.7 - 1973 Ken Sanders - RP6
No reason to stop the party now, as I think we have C, 2B, SP2 all decided and OF3 is a hot mess for us that we can just wait on and see what years we have to either save $$ or try to get someone a little better and go pitching in rd 25. Figured I'd have to go with at least 1 guy under 40/IP to save some salary, Sanders at least brings high end numbers for his 28 IP. At 833K, we'll live with it and enjoy the projected bump up the order.
Round 13.4 - 1977 Tug McGraw - RP3
Wait a minute...I think I misunderstood the expectation for the first 24 rds You can go over 100m, you just can't go over the 112m - 10%left. Well, that certainly changes things...though its too late now to go back and add a little more quantity w/quality. On the bright side, we're all the way up to 4th and that means if we manage this right, 86 Scott, 85 Doc are certainly in play...with 85 McGee and 86 Raines as quality fall backs for the likely terrible OF3 we will draft (81 Gorman Thomas...yuck!) Oh yeah, a lefty for the pen that brings some IP with modest numbers.
Round 14.4 - 1972 Sparky Lyle - RP1
Well now that 86 Scott is in play, time to figure out how to make sure I can get there salary wise (damn you Jim Palmer!) Lots of cheap bench options and almost all of them still in play...lets get the other expensive bullpen spot taken care of, RP1. Sparky Lyle helps fill the IP void brought on by the Sanders pick and he keeps the ball in the park. At just over 3m, thats about as cheap and decent as we can afford.
Round 15.6 - 1974 Grant Jackson - RP5
Shoot...back up to 6th. Don't like seeing Schwarze ahead of me with 86 available. Really not in love with my options...but if I can get Scott, he along with Koufax, Clemens and Palmer should really help offset some of the bullpen depth. Gotta keep OF3 open for now -- need to see what my rd 25 options are going to be. Grant Jackson is a cost pick.
Round 16.6 - 1992 Sergio Valdez - RP7
Let's keep the low cost going and finish up this bullpen. Valdez, another quality ERC+ arm, with a little lighter IP set. Gets me some quality for 1.2m
Round 17.3 - 1979 Ron Guidry - SP2
Schwarze!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not only have I not quite been able to get around him in salary, now he has taken the SP2 I penciled in 10 rds ago. I guess its my own fault chasing the low salaries for so many rounds. Welp, gotta pivot at SP2 and since I don't want to play around with it anymore in case I actually need him, lets grab one now. Ugh...well there is a Guidry, who maybe becomes a Long A if we can grab Scott. Guidry is cheaper than Welch was, so maybe this bites Schwarze in the long run (assuming he is looking where I am)
Round 18.4 - 1983 Mike Vail - Bench1
And now he is taking 200k players?!? He has got to be zeroing in on Scott. May have to punt Cash and get cheaper with Randolph at 2B. Ok, someone inexpensive that doesn't mess up my years....Mike Vail, 300K. He might get 3 or 4 hits off the bench.
Round 19.4 - 1967 Bob Heise - Bench2
Time to gain some ground -- let's look at the middle inf bucket cause with my 2B options, I either need a glove or a bat for a few PAs. Ah, Heise brings minimal PAs, but if I get Cash, thats ok. He hits and at under 500k, that is what I need. Now within 146K of Schwarze...
Round 20.4 - 1968 Manny Jimenez - Bench3
Ugh, another 200k player. He must know I am after Scott as well. Still have Doc and the OFs as fall backs...the $$ gonna be tight. Someone help me by taking some 1986 players! Low cost, decent PH from the OF. Likely to see ABs late for our OF3 choice (Thomas or 88 Bonds). Or Randolph? Wait, I can't do that because he's 82 and I took Yount forever ago. Ugh. Cash it is at 2B. Lets get the cheap unknowns for now.
Round 21.3 - 1980 Carlton Fisk - C
Welp, I'm up to 3rd...but thats not gonna cut it. Whatever is gonna happen, I'm gonna need Fisk to have options. Mediocre arm, but not a total zero at the plate. 14 or so rounds after I figured he might be the cheap option, he is.
Round 22.5 - 1966 Duke Sims - C2
Down to 5th isn't encouraging. Wait, Schwarze just spent 5.7 on Roy White and BeAll (not sure if he has 86 available) took the expensive Puckett. Maybe I'm not dead yet. Doing the math...its super close and I'm just on the wrong side. I need a couple guys or the right guy from 1986 to get picked. Ok, lets go C2 and see where we are when we pick in rd 23.
Round 23.3 - 1988 Barry Bonds - OF3
Welp, no help on players. Looks like I'm gonna have to settle for McGee or Raines -- well, hopefully. Just in case, lets take Bonds in case he has to play.
Round 24.3 - 1976 Dave Cash - 2B
Man, if I had been able to make up something like 400k, I could have had the salary to afford Scott. Now, I'm pretty nervous about the depth of the pitching staff. Better get the best hitter we can find. Looks like McGee, Raines, Molitor are the options. God do I need it to be one of the first 2.
Round 25.7 - 1986 Tim Raines
So I was right, Schwarze got Mike Scott. And he ended up doing it from 5th. Man that 1975 Palmer pick hurts now. I guess I should have considered cost and usability when building the 1986 squad...may have gotten the 1 or 2 more drafted I needed. Ok, sweating out the 2 OFs I want...And McGee is gone, but no one else can take Raines so I get my leadoff hitter. A first 6 of Raines - Boggs - Williams - Yaz - Yount - Powell should be above average. No idea what park to put them in, but it was a blast.
Post draft note: Hopefully you all don't hate me for my early rd delay. Once I legitimately typed a proxy, decided to give it a few minutes to see if I was happy with it, fell asleep, and went on about my day the next day thinking I'd sent the proxy. This draft was challenging, but as usual a blast to do. I'm in for v.4 even if its not available until October. As always, thanks Schwarze for a great draft!
