Okay, new series starts on the overnight. It's a home and home with a another team with a goofy name, They Call Me Cotton Candy. They are 24-24, and lead the NL Central by 3 games. They are throwing their ace, 1973 Tom Seaver (4-1, 1.66). Their catcher is 2006 Chris Snyder, and A+ thrower. 1978 Geoff Zahn (5-4, 4.33) throws for us.

Cotton Candy does not have much hitting. The only 2 guys who are doing much are Joe Mauer and Marwin Gonzalez. They also seem to only have 8 pitchers right now.

Trivia for you guys. Who hit the most career home runs off of Tom Seaver?
Not even one guess here. The answer is Rick Monday, he took Seaver deep 11 times.

No losing streak here!

In fact a very nice result as we beat Cotton Candy 3-1. Jack Doscher JR.'s first start, and it's a beauty. 8 innings, 4 hits, one run. Alcala needed 21 pitches in the 9th as he loaded the bases with just one out on 2 walks and a single, but he got out of it for the save. Drysdale took the loss, 7 innings, 8 hits, 3 runs.

We got one in the first on an RBI hit from Murcer. It stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the 5th when we put up 2 more runs on a leadoff single by Doscher Jr. and a 2 run blast from Speaker. They got their lone run on an RBI double from Boros in the 6th. 1979 Murcer has been a lifesaver. Not one of his great real life years, but so far here he's slashing .333/.435/.490 with 14 runs and 12 RBI in 13 games (51 AB). Merrifield had 2 of Cotton Candy's 5 hits.

THREE STARS
1. Jack Doscher Jr. - 8 innings, one run for the win.
2. Tris Speaker - 2 for 4, 2 run HR
3. Bobby Murcer - 2 for 4, RBI

Start of a home and home this evening against 71. Facing another hall of fame pitcher, 1924 Dazzy Vance. In this last stretch we beat Cy Young, Gerritt Cole and Drysdale, lost to Seaver. Let's make it 4-1 in the last 5 games against hall of fame starters. Our ace goes for us, Roy Mitchell (6-1, 3.48). We have not faced a lefty in quite a while now. Boudreau is back after a rest. Waiting for a LH starter to give Spoke a rest.

Ed Bailey catches tonight for them, just a C thrower.

Vance only went 6 innings, but they mowed us down 7-0 on just 4 hits. Mitchell went 8, gave up 7 runs, but only 3 were earned. Errors by Cullenbine, Leach and Helms. They got 2 RBIs each from McMullen and Bud Harrelson, who had a triple.

https://www.whatifsports.com/slb/Boxscore.aspx?gid=40543482&pid=1&pbp=0&tf=10

Castillo pitched the 9th for us. Two hits for Boudreau, including a triple.

We are now 27-24 as we approach the 1/3 mark of the season. We are 12 games behind Balking To New Orleans, who are 39-12 with an RD of +98. They have scored more runs than us with a weaker lineup in the Astrodome. Target Best is 35-16 in second place, 8 games ahead of us, with an RD of +78. Our RD is now +6 for the season.

Second game of the home and home against the team called 71. I understand they spent months with fan suggestions before settling on that brilliant team name, 71. They are now 23-28 with an RD on -4 for the season, and just 2 games behind Cotton Candy, who leads the NL Central with an impressive record of 25-26. The last place team in that division is 17-34, which is 10 games behind us, but only 8 games behind their division leader.

71 pitches 1903 Roy Patterson (2-10, 3.04) tonight, so we see ANOTHER right hander. Russ Ford (4-5, 4.74) goes for us tonight.

The algo rewards switch hitters. They always get the "bonus"

Thank you!

So another flaw with the sim. Instead of hitting as they should, switch hitters hit as if they will hit worse against the same side pitchers to even things out, but they ever face any pitchers where they are batting R v R or L v L. Sounds right, as my 2 switchers (Cullenbine, Schofield) are both over performing.

Now that you tell me, I see that half of the teams in my league have stockpiled switch hitters, including both teams that are ahead of me in my division.

All 8 starters for this guy are switch hitters. 1921 Schang with a .991 OPS? Give me a break. He was good enough that year at .881.

So 71 swept us in the home and home, winning this one 8-6. Naturally we led 5-1 after 4 innings, but gave it up. Russ Ford went 5.2 innings and ended up allowing 14 hits and 7 runs, 6 earned. He is now 4-6 with a 5.05 ERA. Scott Proctor went 1.1 scoreless, and Henderson allowed a run in one innings. The win went to Al Schulz in relief of Patterson, with Matt Miller getting the last 2 outs for his third save.

Ken McMullen had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, with 4 RBI. Junior Noboa had 2 hits and a walk and scored 3 runs. Pete Reiser went 4 for 5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. On our side Speaker and Boudreau each went 2 for 5 with 2 runs and an RBI. Cullenbine with a double and a triple and 2 RBI.

Next up is a 3 game series at the Thespians. I think this is the first team that we will play for a second time. Yes, we swept 3 games from them last time at our place. This time they are home, at Nationals Park. First game tomorrow afternoon, and we finally face a lefty. Jake Weimer (2-10, 3.09) will go against Geoff Zahn (5-5, 4.62) for us. The Thespians are 20-32 on the season, in third place in the AL East, 7 games back.

Lotta moves just made. Dropped McCovey, Russ Ford, and Lang and picked up 2014 Scherzer, 1947 Hank Greenberg and 1946 Red Ruffing.
12/26/2022 2:33 AM
One more move.

2022 Cionel Perez in and 2007 Scot Proctor out.

I have much better starting pitching now, and with McCovey not ever hitting like I expected, if I can just get the same from Greenberg that McCovey was doing I am in business.

I sent in a question about this, here's what they claimed.

Hello SavoyBG,

There isn't a glitch with switch hitters. Given a favorable situation hitters tend to perform better than their pitcher counterparts and pitching is one of the more difficult aspects of the game to manage. Due to this sometimes players will outperform their RL stats offensively just based on how the game simulates.

I've noticed that many of the teams in my league have stockpiled several switch hitters, and most of them seem to be overperforming their real life stats. Is there a glich or something whereby switch hitters are always getting the boost that a righty would get against a lefty, and vice versa, without even having to face a same side pitcher to even things out?

For example, 1990 Eddie Murray, who hit .330 that year is hitting .433 after 200 AB.

I guess my players approvd of the moves I made as we just slaughtered the Thespians, 11-1. Zahn goes all the way on a 5 hitter with no walks to improve to 6-5. We Batted Weimer for 10 hits in 5.2 innings, and then later bombarded reliever for 4 hits and 5 walks in 3 innings.

https://www.whatifsports.com/slb/Boxscore.aspx?gid=40547948&pid=1&pbp=0&tf=10

Boudreau was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored. Cullenbine 3 for 4, 2 runs, 2 RBI. Greenberg with a run and an RBI in his debut here. Buxton was 2 for 5, 2 runs, 2 RBI, and Cochrane with 2 RBI. Pignatano came in to catch in the bottom of the 7th as Cochrane got a few innings off, and Joe then smashed a 3 run HR in the 8th. Dummy Hoy with 2 hits for the Thespians. They got their lone run on a HR from Terry Kennedy in the 8th.

Game 2 of the series this evening, we will face1964 Jim Bouton (4-9, 4.62). We are going with 1946 Red Ruffing in his first appearance here. His real life numbers were 5-1, 1.77. Zahn threw just 91 pitches in his CG, and will be back to 100 already after just one day of rest.

Switch hitters don’t always get a boost, in fact they never get a boost. They just don’t get a penalty. It’s also a very small sample size. Players will perform great feats in a short amount of time, give it time and the results will fall back to the mean most of the time. Sford is one of the best owners on this sim - I’d take notes on how he builds teams.
