Over the course of the season I wrote about several things that I did not like about the sim. so I am gonna finish up here with mainly the good things I have to say.
I REALLY like the game to game changes you have to make with your team. Setting up the bullpen each game, juggling pitchers based on fatigue, etc... Also the waiver wire, which gives you a chance to change players, and I did that a lot, especially with my pitchers. But I was also able to find better hitters at a couple of spots as 3 of the guys I started with just were well below expectations. I got rid of 1969 McCovey, 1930 Cochrane and 1961 Yogi Berra, who was playing LF. They were all well below their expected hitting after about 50 games, so I ended up with Dickey at C, he was great at the plate. Suitcase Simpson replaced Murcer, who was the first replacement for Berra. Bobby came in on fire, but petered out after like 15 games, and Simpson was very good the rest of the way, playing several games at 1B too as I got 4th OFer Byron Buxton into mix. . I first had a later Greenberg season, and he did not do much, so I ended up with Eric Hosmer, who was consistent although unspectacular.
The 5 guys who were regulars all season did very well. Speaker in CF, Cullenbine in RF, Helms at 2B, Boudreau at SS and Leach at 3B. And Roy Mitchell was the one pitcher who was there all season, and he was very good for the first 2/3 of the year, and still ended up with a fine season as my best full time starter.
I think the fatigue that the sim uses is fine for the regulars and the main pitchers. I think it's too harsh on the bench guys and some of the bullpen pitchers, but I able to work around it after awhile when I got used to it.
The box scores and play by play are fine. The leader boards are a bit subpar. There are other categories I'd like to se, like RC/27, XBH, and total bases for hitters and run support, OBP allowed and SLG% allowed for pitchers. Also the leaders for catchers' fielding should have the pct. of runners thrown out stealing for each catcher.
It was a very enjoyable season. Great to be able to micro manage the lineup and bullpen for every game rather than just setting those things every so often like with most sims. My second season is underway. Off to a bad start at 4-8, but my 4 starters have been well below how they should be pitching so far. Things should stabilize soon and we'll see how I do then.
