Something really strange is happening in League 6. If I'm reading this right, the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th picks are all missing the cut at this point, and the 7th and 8th picks are just barely squeezing in on the 24-28 tiebreaker.

Did we all just draft horribly? Or was the gap top to bottom much lower in that league?

I hadn't seen that before now. Will be interesting to see if it shifts as the season progresses. It almost has to, logically.

It also appears that many of the earlier picks have had some bad luck. Check out the Exp Win% vs Actual Win%

Geesh, it just keeps getting worse and worse. Based on the 54-Game standings, only 11 of my 25 teams will advance. How pathetic is that?

The top 20 teams in 1-run win% have an average winning% of .818 in 1-run games (180-40). Those same 20 teams have a winning% of .479 in games decided by 2+ runs (393-427).

The bottom 20 teams in 1-run win% have an average winning% of .201 in 1-run games (46-183). Those same 20 teams have a winning% of .493 in games decided by 2+ runs (400-411).

This is just another example showing how 1-run games is almost all luck and has very little to do with how good your team is otherwise.

Leaving for the airport now - be back in 10 or 11 days. Things seem to be running smoothly for now so I don't anticipate any problems. I figure by the time I get back, I'll either have no teams set to advance to Round Three or they'll all do exponentially better without my leadership and surprise me when I return. I always am curious about 1 run games discussions. It seems to be self fulfilling if the Top 20 teams have Won more close ones which technically should be 50/50. Those that Win have more Wins and rank higher.

However, similar to Extra Innings results. In teams I have had that did well in both, they had two things. VERY good BPs that were deep. Not just a great closer but other good setup/long guys who do not give it up. To get to extra innings you had to be tied and usually the next run Wins it so if you are good in Extras...you likely have more 1 run Wins and vice versa. They also had good defenses...basically no giveaways of runs. Notice I didnt say GREAT SP or Huge Offenses that Win 12-11 slugfests and no reference to good teams Win more close ones or extra innings.

Would you consider this a good bullpen?

Oh, and the team is ranked 8th in fielding percentage and is ranked 1st with 40 + plays (only 9 - plays).

This team is 24-14 in 2+ run games and 4-13 in 1-run games, including 1-8 in extra innings.

On the other side of the equation, in League 2, my 1901-02 Americans/Reds team has the following guys pitching in relief.

'02 Bill Phillips (312 ips, .236 oav, 1.20 whip)
'02 George Winter (200 ips, .238 oav, 1.20 whip)
'02 Clarence Currie (220 ips, .265 oav, 1.300 whip)
All three pitchers are worst than my three SPs ('01 Cy Young, '02 Cy Young, '02 Noodles Hahn).

This team is ranked 20th in fielding percentage and 3rd in + plays (43) but also has 14 - plays (below average).

This team is currently 23-21 in 2+ run games, but is 11-0 in 1-run games. Can we really say the reason is because of defense & bullpen?

Here's a fun stat. In league 7 (the league with the lowest average runs scored per game), here are the top pitching staffs and their record in 1-run games...

'67-68 Orioles/White Sox (3.3 runs allowed per game, 4-13 in 1-run games, 24-14 in 2+ run games)
'63-64 White Sox/Senators (3.6, 6-8, 23-18)
'63-64 Dodgers/Red Sox (4.1, 4-10, 27-14)
'65-66 Dodgers/Mets (4.1, 7-7, 16-25)
'61-62 Yankees/Senators (4.3, 7-4, 25-19)
'63-64 Phillies/Angels (4.3, 9-9, 18-19)
'63-64 Orioles/Colt 45's (4.3, 4-13, 17-21)

So the 7 best pitching staffs are 150-130 in 2+ run games and 41-64 in 1-run games.

There is definitely something amiss with the sim engine in late game situations. It's crazy how many endings of games are blown by great bullpens in the box scores that I check.
