Range in the outfield, glove in the infield.

In theory (theory) more flyballs in the outfield so I want the guy to be able to get to more balls. More groundballs in the infield so I want the guy to be able to field more that he gets to. Also a guy has to cover more area in the outfield.

Unless its a very very rare situation I won't even look at a guy below 85 range for CF. for 2B I'm comfortable with 75/75.

Thanks hockey. It just seems from what I've seen so far that the errors in of are more disastrous.

FWIW my 85/77 2B has 13 plus plays so far into the season and 0 minus plays, and my 76/86 CF 0 plus and 0 minus plays. You have me wanting to switch them, but I am not sure I should. Arm strength and accuracy for both is well above the recs.

I'll get hate mail for this but the answers are too easy. If you want to differentiate your team from everyone else, have outstanding infield corners. Virtually everyone will try to have the proper SS/2B/CF in the lineup. However, having the best 1B/3B will help in almost as many ways and is not nearly as common. The 1st Baseman touches the ball more than the SS and 2B and, with awesome range, can be a difference maker. To a lesser extent but similar, a 3B with superior range and a superior arm can shut down lefties.

Problem is someone has to be able to score runs. I know its cookie cutter but my big bats tend to be corners while defense is up the middle. Years ago I heard someone fielded 8 shortstops and I'd be interested. I just don't have the heart for it.

Agreed in part. It depends on the home ballpark and how your team is built. My best teams are defensive/pitching heavy with contact hitting and speed. For a team that wants to hit the long ball, I'd start a 2nd DH at 1B just for some extra punch.

If I did this I wouldn't stop at 8! Start a SS's arm at C and dominate the run game!

Actually, I have done this toward the end of some seasons, just to see what would happen. It does work for gunning down base stealers.

I've done it as well but you lose all pitch calling bonuses. It's a serious tradeoff.

Coming back to this thread and realizing that when hockey said 8 it already included catcher, but I wanted to get my point out about how a SS at catcher isn’t that big of a drop off

Right! You could have a SS pitch as well but I don't know if it would be worth it.

Back in the day, you actually could have a position player pitch. It was a fine solution to combat minor league staff fatigue. Too bad they got rid of the option.

Having an arm at 2b and CF can hedge against having less than ideal glove and range ratings. The strong arm at 2b, helps finish double play balls. The strong arm at CF helps keep those balls that CF can't get to, from being two bases.

I thought Admin confirmed that arm in the outfield does absolutely nothing.

I've regularly played SS at C with no drop off in pitching quality. I'm not convinced PC is that important
