So, back to the nature of God and how we are created in His image.
When we say that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. What does all that mean EXACTLY?
Very hard to wrap our human mind around such lofty thoughts in order that we actually understand it. Some will argue we cannot. I’ll concede that while we cannot FULLY grasp what it means, we certainly have the capacity to have some sort of idea and make some observations about it.
We can think of it as “All the potential that could possibly exist across the entire universe and across all of time”.
To better understand what THAT means, we must pause and take a look at more tangible earthly ideas and concepts.
Tomorrow is unknown to us all. The potential is ever abundant. You could not go to work and play video games all day. You could go to work and simply follow your routine. You could decide to call out of work and go on an impromptu vacation. Etc, etc.
Before you take some action in one direction or the other, they are all equally possible.
Let’s think of this as the chaos of uncertainty.
It is literally a void of nothingness until your actions bring one of the infinite number of possibilities into reality.
In a sense you are “creating” your future.
Let's say you imagine "I want to lose 30 pounds and become more fit".
So, you begin a change in diet and begin a workout regimen until eventually you become this new version of you THAT YOU CREATED.
No one could’ve done it but you and you could never have become this new version of you without first having that vision.
You brought this reality into being by acting like you believed in this vision and making decisions accordingly.
You CREATED a different reality than that which would exist if you hadn’t made any changes to your daily routine.
This is true in the believer and the non-believer because it is a fundamental TRUTH.
So hopefully that demonstrates how even frail & faulty creatures have tremendous capacity to effect change and create a great many number of futures for ourselves.
Let’s imagine now that you found a genie lamp and you aren’t limited to 3 wishes but infinite wishes. What would you do?
You might indulge in all of your fleshly desires but at some point they all become satisfied and yet you will ever want something else. ALWAYS something else. Think about it.
Whatever your wildest fantasy, it will only satisfy for a very limited amount of time and then you need something else. We are creatures of adventure. We are never satisfied with what is, nor can we be.
Now let’s return to the idea of God’s eternality.
All knowing, ever present.
What can you DO with THAT? NOTHING.
In order to have any meaning, He must CREATE. Just as we must.
What does the Bible say?
Genesis begins with:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 Then God said,…”
So what is happening here?
Well, the ever powerful “all the potential yada yada” that we looked at earlier, we can define THAT as being “without form and void and darkness was on the face of the deep”.
ALL the potential without restrictions of time, space or knowledge, but being used for NOTHING.
Until what? Until God “SAID”.
He took an ever infinite array of possibilities and potentials and began saying specific things, which brought them into existence.
Again, how was this done? HE SAID.
In a previous post I tried to explain the revealed plurality embodied in God. I didn’t go into detail but it was fairly clear that the nature of God was one of plurality.
One part of that plurality is the Son.
The book of John begins with:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God".
Here we see that the Son is the very part of God, that brought forth creation. How? God said.
When he spoke, obviously he spoke using The Word.
