you set the order in which your players get drafted in autodraft. that's not luck. that's your understanding of a players value in WIS... all the way down to the 288th spot. certainly you would need to make sure you had enough PGs, SGs, SFs, PFs, and Cs in your list of players to draft... all sorted according to their order of value in WIS.

But it's just blind luck as to whether you happen to get a bunch of Centers and no PGs, though, correct? Even if you populate your list with a variety of positions (which everyone would obviously do), you could easily end up with way too many centers and no PG, just because of luck. I don't see how that's skill-based.

I remember the early days of yahoo fantasy basketball, 20 years ago, we had a similar process for autodraft (rank all the players), but at least the system had some mechanisms for ensuring that teams got decent balance when everything was said and done. And even then, teams were often badly lopsided with regard to positions. If this process is totally blind with regard to balancing positions, it's more luck than skill, imo.

And since WIS seriously dings you for playing guys out of position, I don't see how this doesn't end up potentially screwing at least a few of the teams once the "auto-draft" is completed.

Which isn't to say we shouldn't do it. But, like the blind auction, I just see it as more luck-based (in that some teams could get hosed in terms of positional eligibility), and therefore not a great metric for who is best at WIS.

Just to clarify, autodraft is also a 6 round draft with the 6th round a double. So even if you get an overload of one position you will still be able to fill your roster with what you want. The first time I think I had 4 point guards and ended up with the best record. Lost to pex in the finals and I think his first three picks were all big men. No one ended up getting too screwed.

This is an important distinction for all to see. We are not auto drafting a full 12 player team, so we definitely will have the ability to balance out our positions after the 6 round auto draft. Love this concept.

thanks for the clarification ben. forgot we only draft 7 in autodraft. then pick from the rest to balance out where needed. I say bidding is not drafting. At least autodraft is drafting.

Autodraft was a lot of fun. Era league is already being done in the DDL. IMO, Silent Auction doesn't have a lot to do with drafting skills, it's more bidding skills, and so really doesn't factor into determining BOWIS (if we're keeping with the theme of the league)

Silent auction is legitimately awful. Era league played out. Autodraft is hard. That’s sort of the point of BOWIS. Are we trying to figure out the best or are we just going to do a bunch of cupcake leagues and leave it up to randomness?
