as soon as eman picks we can start the dagger round. He said he is likely to pick tomorrow afternoon.

No need to go in order.

Remember final roster must have 2 c, 2 ib, 2 2b, 2 3b, 2 ss, 5 of, 10 p as their primary positions. Primary positions are established from loading team as a team. Once season starts you can start a player anywhere he has a WIS fielding rating. That's important for dagger purposes.

Whalers, I have looked carefully at your roster construction options and tried to figure out what the biggest wrench might be to throw in there.

There are a few positions where you don't have many cheap options, but I think you have ways to work around losing one of them. It would tie your hands a lot and cost you flexibility, but it wouldn't be the worst thing.

I think ultimately the key factor for me came down to how to make it hardest to fill the 6 spots from one of your teams. Those '36 Red Sox have one really good hitter, one really good pitcher, and a pretty good catcher. What I don't see are a lot of other Sox you'll want to use, and in many cases you'd have other ripple effects of having to use them over other guys.

So, I'm going to take away a talented and affordable player who can't be easily replaced without losing quality or overspending elsewhere. Say goodbye to P Lefty Grove.

As for ballparks, I'm not sure how you will want to play this, but I sure as heck don't need Fenway Park in the division damaging my pitching staff. So, scratch Fenway from your choices.

Good luck. I think you'll still have a nice team, better than mine anyway.

Midknight doesn't have any really expensive players that jump out and scream dagger me, so I looked for a position of weakness that I could exploit. He looks thin at the back end of the bullpen, so say goodbye to 76 Royals closer Mark Littell.
Your staff gets it's most pitcher friendly park removed too, so no Griffith Stadium.

OK, Beernoser, I've looked at your 4 team's rosters and have to admit you're in pretty good shape. The '46 Tigers were a solid choice and your selection of the '56 Red Sox really filled in a lot of gaps for you (in fact I wish I had chosen them for my 4th team). I see you have plenty of starting pitchers available and my first idea was to eliminate one of them (I had my eye on Virgil Trucks). I then looked at daggering your only 2B with decent AB's Goodman but that still leaves you with Lepcio who might even be the better choice. I also thought about maybe taking away your best catcher in Ted Simmons or your power hitting 1B Hank Greenberg. In the end I decided to make it harder for you to find 6 of those '36 Athletics to fit into your plans, so OF Bob Johnson is my dagger and Busch Stadium II is eliminated.
It looks as if you'll have a good team and I already don't like that you're in my division.

jpeterso's team is based on the 56 Dodgers which I was hoping to draft.

This was the last hurrah for the Brooklyn team, losing in seven games to the hated Yankees in the World Series.

The whole group is there. Roy Campanella, Gil Hodges, Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, Don Newcombe, even young Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. In the book I read on this team one of the most interesting scenes was the great Dodger team captain and shortstop making a speech to the rest of the team in the midst of a great pennant race. He said the Dodgers were getting on in years and the Braves were getting better every year so they needed to win this year. The team responded to their captain, shortstop and heart of the team and beat out the Hank Aaron - Eddie Mathews Braves by one game and the Reds by two games in a wonderful pennant race.

I decided the way to hurt jpeterso's team the most was to psychologically rip out the heart of his team by taking out the great Dodger captain and shortstop.

Jpeterso will have to do without Chico Fernandez (SS) 1956 Brooklyn Dodgers. How can he not be in the Hall of Fame

Also, I'll cancel the Baker Bowl,

When kentol took the 1956 New York Yankees as his fourth round pick, I was pretty sure I knew who I'd be bumping off. Then I took a closer look at his four rosters, and that only served to confirm my suspicions.

Mickey Mantle? Go ahead and use him.

Whitey Ford? He's all yours.

Yogi Berra? Pencil him in at catcher.

But there's no way in good conscience that I could let you use Gil McDougald in this league. A shortstop with a .405 OBP who can also play a solid 3B or a competent 2B? That kind of flexibility is just too value and I can't have it in my division. So kiss Gil goodbye, and say hello to the remaining shortstops in your player pool.

Marty Marion's a defensive dynamo, but he better be sporting that .233 average and $4.2M price tag. Chris Speier is actually a poor man's McDougald with his positional flexibility, but boy is that .226 average ugly, especially when it comes with no power to speak of. So maybe Pete Suder's your man, the cheapest of the three at only $3.1M, a decent contact hitter and a passable defender.

Oh wait. You need to roster two of them. So is it better to find playing time for two punch-and-judy middle infielders, or bury $3M+ in wasted shortstop salary on the far end of your bench? I'll be interested to see which way you play it.

As for ballparks, I really haven't the foggiest idea how you'll play things, so let's stick with the '56 Bronx Bombers and kill Yankee Stadium.

vilefileman - your pitching is loaded, and your hitting is relatively weak even with the addition of the '26 Tigers. You have little power, and your stadiums are all pitcher's parks except for Navin. With that said, I am going to blacklist your best pitcher's park, Cleveland Stadium.

Your pitching is your strength and I think your best value pitcher is Bruce Howard. Say buh bye.

So, I get to dagger redcped. The very same redcped who is currently in overall first place in the WISC.

His first pick was the 1956 Braves which have some really good hitting players with manageable costs (Adcock, Mathews, Hammerin' Hank) as well as some strong pitching relative to the overall talent pool in this league (Spahn, Burdette, maybe Taylor Phillips).

His second team is the 1936 Cincy Reds. Nice platoon catcher option with Lombardi and probably a lock to make the OF in Cuyler. Pitching? Paul Derringer and the gang are gonna get rock-and-roll-hootchie-cooed. Of course, he did get some cheap roll players to add to the mix.

His third team is 1936 Dodgers. Another platoon catcher option in Phelps, some cheap help in good spots. Pitching? Van Lingle Mungo (anybody know that David Frishberg song?) and 34 innings of "the other" Dutch Leonard

His fourth team is the 1976 Astros. Again, some decent potential starters and plenty of insurance cheap backup. Pitching? JR Richard (currently 12-16 for my $80mm team in the WISC with a 5.02 ERA and 1.79 WHIP. Of course, we can rightfully blame the manager for most of that. As expected there is bullpen help with this Astros team but not as much as usual.

All of that being said, he does not have a particularly vulnerable position where one removed option would cost him seriously.

I look at his starting pitching and wonder how he will manage to get his team to the 95+ win plateau, which he will inevitably do. Especially, without much presence from the left-hand side now that the obvious dagger pick of Warren Spahn is now official.

Of course, the Astrodome, is daggered as well

Well played, calhoop. I'm about to fall out of 1st place in the tournament, and I don't have a snowball's chance in this division. I probably should have drafted the darn Mets to at least have more SP options, but I wasn't expecting that dagger.

Beernoser, when do we post which team for our 2nd daggers? After all the 1st daggers are posted?
8/2/2023 12:52 AM
Once you've been daggered you can post which team your second dagger should come from.

May want to wait until the person daggering you the second time has thrown his first dagger just to avoid confusion.

you sure you don't want to take Pee Wee Reese? Gah, Chico was an obvious choice and I held my breath hoping you would not notice, the commish and founder of this league, not notice....
