Pex posted this in the league chat re: tanking games:
"that is how rules get made. when it is untenable to our community, then we agree as a community to disallow it. and agree on a penalty for violation. we don't have to rely on WIS to plug these loopholes in the SIM, which isn't perfect and never will be. I'm not a fan of mass resting myself to game the game, but I think an argument could be made that resting is part of the game IRL. despite the fact that sitting all 5 starters for an entire playoffs game has never happened in the history of the NBA. and then it has to be regulated. by who? the commish going to establish a rest committee that's going to check rest stats for each team every night? if the oversight isn't manageable then it can't be implemented successfully. and we can't very well just mob one guy when we spot it. that's not fair either. that would need to get voted on by a majority, and this isn't the place to do that. if it were me trying to get a rule change, then I would bring it up in the forum chat for the next league (after the draft is over). See if you can't get a healthy discussion from both sides and then post a poll to see what the majority decides. It's not obvious this should happen though. Resting does happen IRL and as we are striving for a realistic basketball simulation, who decides how much is acceptable?"
Pex is right, how do we determine what is fair, do we have some committee, do we comb through every box score, what is reasonable? There is really no way to ban it that is manageable or consistent. You should be able to rest guys here and there do combat fatigue. Tanking games, especially playoff games is stupid but crafting a rule to combat it without so much red tape is pretty exhaustive. So, I came up with this idea that I think generally solves the problem somewhat.
In the NBA, coaches are required to list players on the injury report prior to the game. So, if you are going to rest players in any game, you must post which players you are going to rest X (TBD) hours prior to the game cycle time in the league chat.
This allow coaches to continue to rest whenever they see fit. This allows opposing coaches to make lineup adjustments if they want because they don't necessarily need to run out their best players max minutes when they other teams best players aren't available. I think this is in very fair spirit of the game. In RL, nobody would have zero knowledge if a player wasn't going to play and wouldn't play their stars tons of minutes in an 80 point blowout. However, this does allow coaches the ability to rest. This does require opposing coaches to make sure they check the league chat a couple hours before tip off, a fair enough ask especially for a playoff game.
Thoughts?
