NFL Draft League 4. Live Draft completed. Topic

Well, this happens after each live draft. It’s not a big deal. This was my suggested resolution to eliminate something that no one really cares about. When we went down to 10 live draft positions, I thought it would help to draft all starters and core contributors in the live draft.

I can say certainly the spirit of the league is not fighting over minimum salary players. We wanted to get away from that- and I was one of the primary owners ensuring I’d get my cost saver filler. Do we really care how many James Owens or the cheap Rickey Dudley’s that are on multiple rosters? We can work smarter and remove this. No one is being penalized or given an advantage. Just make the 325-399K all available post draft.

sitemailed the remaining 1 edit. and 1 team left to post salary and enter their team.

If we get these items completed before 11pm EST, we could see the rosters and schedule thereafter at 1130pm or so. Thank you for everyone's patience.
  • Ethan Tremblay : We'll have to do that tomorrow. We close in five minutes.

    Peter Highman : It's 6:35, sir.

Lonnie : What are you, my f-----g boss? You make the hours? I say when we close. l got reservations at Chili's. I'm meeting my boys.

Peter Highman : You have a reservation at Chili's?

Ethan Tremblay : That's actually smart. l mean, it gets busy on a Wednesday night.

Seems like a great idea to me having all salaries under $400k available as duplicates and reduce down time.
11/16/2023 6:22 PM
I kind of like this idea, but my vote might depend on exactly how we structure this rule.

I think three or four times over these past 3 draft seasons, I have intentionally drafted either Carlos Carson, Vernon Davis, or Rickey Dudley, expressly because they have useful seasons as a starter and can also be filler if I end up in a budget crunch. Last season I used Carlos Carson as a starter, this season as a bench player.

I could see the rule being that if I draft them, I have to use a season over $400k. Or it could just mean someone else could use their $325k season. I’m sure a lot of the popular ones have seasons where they cost more than $400k.

Not a hill I’d die on or anything, but I do like leaving myself options, especially because I usually have one of my teams with a more expensive defense.

Tidealer made his edit. Thank you tidealer! So we wait for rjk to post salary and enter his team. Hope everything is ok with our fellow owner.
11/16/2023 8:37 PM
We will leave it open for rjk until tomorrow night at 11. Hope all is ok.

As a back up plan, the 1 team owners can take the team if he does not show by then. Sitemail if interested. You would keep the live draft roster and fill the other 13 spots. Plan B would be posting an immediate fill in the classifieds with the same details.

And thank you for the feedback on the minimum salary topic. I’m fine with either way. We can vote on it during the season as well if there is enough interest. One other point is the proxy- I think we make those as soon as the window opens. I was playing commish on a proxy this draft and holding it until the end of the window (to allow late picks more time). Thankfully it worked out, but it could have went really bad if someone took their pick.
11/16/2023 10:16 PM
I have posted in the classifieds for an immediate fill--to take the existing team drafted. Then, complete the post draft process to populate the full roster. Might appeal to some who like themes, but can't commit to the full live draft process.

Before we kick off our first preseason games, I always like to cover some fun facts and observations.

- How in the world was WR Randy Moss not drafted? And, also the Andy Reid era Eagles DEF that won the SB last year? Each season there are a few glaring omissions, but seems people were approaching their team construct in a different way in this draft. I was beginning to think Gronk was going to get overlooked and Marshall Faulk might still be team-less. But the following are: Marion Motley, Skeets Quinlan, Lenny Moore, Jamaal Charles, Bill Groman, Tom Fears. Owners bypassing those high skill/high dollar players for more stamina elsewhere and bang for their buck, the spending also went more on DEF, the running game, ST, K, and punter.

- Speaking of kickers- 75 % of the league has a kicker with 70 accuracy rating or better. I have the worst! A handful of owners are in the 55 to 65 range. With that in mind, how much do you trust that kicker from start to finish in a single game. Do you let him kick from anywhere? Do you change the settings based in opponent? Or the weather forecast? I let mine ride normally with no changes once I like the way the team is playing, i.e., between the 20s more so than in the red zone. We gon' learn something this year!

- Keep an eye on the Special Teams league leaders this year. So many owners banked on this. And INTS could happen more this year across the board with the draft digging deeper into the QB inventory (and a bigger emphasis on DEF and less big playmakers to knock those DEFs out of alignment). Moreover, teams are also steering away from the 3 stud WRs- that would stretch the DEF and have that consistent extra red zone threat. Not to be remiss, the growing amount RB tandems out there- and they have the receiving rating and stamina. So the formation settings may need some additional TLC from game to game.

- The explosion of theme teams this year! Many owners were getting creative with their particular vibe. This is certainly the place where you can do it and have a better chance to be competitive. Who will make their mark? The Chargers All Stars. The Walkers. The Georges. The Joneses. One of the seldom drafted QBs at a discount price. And those team names are the most spirited that we've ever had! I was sad to not be using Fun at Lakes with Noodle Salad. But we get the Blues vs the Blues in the same division!

- On the voting for rule revisions this year: The only current fodder is:

- making 325-399K players all available post draft.
- proxy picks are to be made as soon as you can when the time window opens (blow the whistle on myself rule).
- There is always talk of the banned round remaining and expanding the ban amount. Just brainstorming here:

How about we remove the banned round-- but you can ban a player or unit bubble anytime before the end of round 3 (to be made with your 1st, 2nd or 3rd round selection). Would also shorten the draft to 7 days. And, this would start to make other players/units available. With their being so many outstanding players not even drafted each season, I think this would be super fun and break up the monotony of a formal banned round. If there is fear of QBs or units getting overly banned, we could set a ban maximum per roster spot, or even have limits per round. I'd love doing this with everyone having 2 bans personally. Love to hear your thoughts. We could also just go as-is with no changes for Season 5.

As many of you know, I like to track everything and predict outcomes based on relative and overall strength, theories and a Ouija board. It works best in keeper leagues, where team salaries can have a range of $30 mil, but this format and the $50 mil league the defenses tend to be closer to similar and the relative skill scores comprise a smaller range. Additionally, with this league the defenses are overly strong based on IRL NFL seasons. If you spend 50% on your defense here, your offense will suffer, and you can’t put up as many points against stingy defenses. The result is often that expensive defenses don’t carry the team to the playoffs. In other leagues line skill scores above 60 tend to help, but here they need to be 80ish to have an impact. The model therefor will have a handful of teams that have W/L records exactly opposite of what I would expect and I will hedge my bets as outlined below.

Teams are sorted by division.

The first column is sorted by the sum total of all of team and player skills, ranked 1-24 for all teams (most pts to least pts).

The second column ranks the sum total of 7 positions, compared to all teams (QBP+RB/WR/TE rec + OLP; QBR+RB/WR/TE run + OLR; ST/K/P; OL sack; D int+sack; D red+drive; D vs P+R)

The third is same as second, but considers only top 100 DUR of QB, 200 DUR of RB, 400 DUR of WR, 200 DUR of TE. Based on these ratings and our schedule, the W/L column would result.

The record column is what I’m going with, as it the result of many casts of the bones, smoke and mirrors, mathematical gyrations and a small djinni that resides on my shoulder. The outcomes in question are games where the teams are closely ranked (ranked within 5 of opponent’s rank) and could go either way. For example, picking on MAY NANCES, I look for them to go 13-3. Because of close games, he might not win 3 of them and go 10-6, but could just as easily not lose 3 games against equal teams and go 16-0. Similarly, By George! is so middle of the pack playing other middle of the pack teams he could win 13 or lose 11 when the dust settles. Easiest schedule – By George!, hardest schedule – You Need To Calm Down.

It looks like the AFC overall is tougher than the NFC.

Abbreviations for season IRL: QB/RBR(uns), QBC(ompletions), QBA(ttempts), RCG(completions of top 2 RB, 4 WR, 2TE), R/G C/G QA/G QC/G are run, caught pass and completions thrown per game. If you happen to max out and match IRL some comparisons bring areas to light. I consider 2-3 catches per game as weak and 6 as strong. Less than 20 carries per game is weak for a starting RB.

Keep in mind when you’re celebrating a 15 stamina WR that has 3 catches in a preseason game that preseason performances don’t include fatigue and injuries

While I don't pretend to comprehend the nuances of kaniac's complicated stats + djinni (?), I'll chime in that I took only his top 8 seeded teams and assessed using a few tools in my bag. From that, Thunder does look strong, and i might take Carson over the Metropolitans. Gotham does not seem to me as awesome as kaniac's prognostication.
I agree that the AFC championship game could be the Super Bowl in disguise.

The team by team comparisons is about whether your rec'g corps has catches at least equal to your QB completions. Or how many carries before maxing out and fatiguing RB/QB.
