Does anyone else constantly come down to a decision between Bellamy, Beaty and Mel Daniels? My guess is Rob hates all of them. But for the people who have a backup big spot left and need some usage which do you choose?
Bellamy is probably my favorite just because he’s got other seasons that can go as a decent backup big with lower usage. Daniels has the boards and Beaty is by far the most efficient with his usage, between the lowish tov and amazing ftr.
I’ve never used any of them but talked myself into liking Bellamy quite a bit this season. I might end up regretting it, but on-paper he looks okay as a rotational guy (wait a minute…isn’t all of this on-paper?)

I liked Bellamy a lot. I’ve used him the last two seasons in two very different ways. One was very successful one was not.

Proxy eval from Midge

1. Giannis Antomtomtocompo

Where are the minutes? I know this guy is supposed to be great, but he is about as available as my cardiologist. One thing is for sure, he has a lot of heart. Giannis, me, and Eddy Curry. The three biggest hearts in the sim imo.

2. Shawn Kemp

Just not a serious player. Too concerned with his next double cheeseburger and Coke is coming. Also too showy. Dunk the ball and get back on defense. Everytime you point a finger at someone, you have three more pointing at you I also say. Midge fact. Sometimes fingers are called digits and the digits Kemp puts on the scale are high. If you want to get high, Shawn Kemp is selling cannabis these days.

3. Bill Walton

Bill Walton doesn't play a bunch a minutes, but if you have a minute, check this out. It is a Hardy Boys-style book told from Bill Walton's POV. It can be seen it in an episode of Ted Lasso.

4. Jayson Tatum

Some thing NO ONE is talking about is Jayson Tatum is only 25 years old. Jayson Tatum does NOT have that dog in him, so he is actually a little over 3.5. Possible Giannis backup.

5. Russell Westbrook

Westbrook is a cat. So no one knows how old he is. Some good rebounding seasons.

6. Tree Rollins

Not his actual name. Any guesses? Stumped? I don't remember what is, I bet Rob knows his given name. I'll text him. He plays defense which is something I love to root for. I should branch out and talk about savage. He has one decent rebounding season.

7. Alvin Robertson

This guy plays defense and is a sneaky rebounder. This was a great pick and is what Rob is talking about when he mentions the over-indexing of efg in Savage.

8. Josh Smith

What is the point of Josh Smith? I am sorry, but the efg is too low.

9. Kyle Korver

Great efg. Nice pick

10. Josh Hart

Have you seen his tv show on facebook? It is with Jalen Brunson. Josh Hart thinks he needs to kill TJ McConnell. More Hart than Giannis, me, and Eddy Curry combined.

11. Tom Boerwinkle

They don't make them like this anymore. Big man that can pass and rebound; palling around with flying squirrels to beat the Russians. Great pick.

12. Gary Payton II

I don't like picking Gary Payton in the sim. It is weird that Gary Payton Jr. didn't make the NBA but Gary Payton II did. How do you search for him? I can also never find Johnson. Does anyone else have this problem? Why didn't The Glove name them thing 1 and thing 2?

I'm kidding of course. Sending good energy your way after poking a bit of fun.

*US = usable seasons
Best picks consider value so not a lot of first rounders mentioned
  • Tier 1 – obvious title contenders
    • Raggeclaws
      • US – 46
      • Best picks – Whiteside, Allen, McGee, Lee, Bryant
      • Worst picks – Calderon, Horford
      • High level thoughts – Defense looks extremely sus, went all in on shooting
    • Benhoidal
      • US – 48
      • Best picks – Embiid, Butler, Gasol, Miller
      • Worst picks – Outlaw, Biedrins
      • High level thoughts – I like Biedrins but the PF/C D is a little weak and would have been better to get a more defensive big
    • Jcred5
      • US – 48
      • Best picks – Kirilenko, Drexler, Lever
      • Worst picks – Ratliff, Mitchell
      • High level thoughts – Dirk and Gobert is a nice combo, lots of parts to juggle in the backcourt
  • Tier 2 – sleeper title contenders
    • Jhsukow
      • US – 40
      • Best picks – Smith, Payton II, Westbrook
      • Worst picks – Tatum, Robertson, Boerwinkle
      • High level thoughts – Normally a team with sus shooting, god awful turnovers and fouls would make me vomit, but I am too intrigued by the defense and rebounding
    • Riftonapple
      • US – 44
      • Best picks – Poeltl, Pierce, Griffin
      • Worst picks – Murray, Ball, McMillan
      • High level thoughts – I think this team f’d up the backcourt but that frontcourt is just so good
  • Tier 3 – fringe title contenders, likely podium contenders, 5-10 range
    • dBKC
      • US – 47
      • Best picks – Yao, West, Weatherspoon
      • Worst picks – Rondo, Ibaka, Bellamy, Simmons
      • dBKC continues his war on turnovers but the team is a threat from all parts of the court and suits his mad scientist tendencies
    • robusk
      • US – 48
      • Best picks – Carter, Mutombo
      • Worst picks – Johnson, Bamba, HR Williams
      • High level thoughts – Meh shooting and poor rebounding will plague this team, overcompensated trying to get threes
    • tarheel1991
      • US – 39
      • Best picks – Boozer, Roundfield, Moncrief
      • Worst picks – McConnell, Murray, J Johnson, Reed
      • High level thoughts – Thank god Moncrief and Kidd play a lot of minutes because the rest of the guards are butt
    • ncmusician_7
      • US – 37
      • Best picks – Magic, Brand, Ayton
      • Worst picks – Green, Iguodala, Powe, Nelson
      • High level thoughts – Magic will have to pick up the slack for the rest of the guards but the frontline is aces
    • Ashamael
      • US – 40
      • Best picks – K Malone, Oscar, O’Quinn, Green
      • Worst picks – Camby, Barry, Fox, Batum
      • High level thoughts – Oscar plays like 48 mpg so the poopoo platter at SG is not a red alert scenario, forwards will involve a lot of juggling
    • chewy3344
      • US – 33
      • Best picks – Mourning, Parish, Clarke
      • Worst picks – Tobias, M Williams, Ball, Melton, Morant
      • High level thoughts – LeBron plus studs at PF and C is a tough combination to beat but it would have been nice not to have so many wasted picks
  • Tier 4 – good shot at top 10
    • 24kpyrite
      • US – 43
      • Best picks – Faried, Dalembert, OIadipo, Mullin
      • Worst picks – Kyrie, Ward, Hayes
      • High level thoughts – Feels like the last couple picks could have gone better but this team did really well in the middle rounds and should have lots of depth
    • Dh555
      • US – 41
      • Best picks – Amare, Marshall, Millsap
      • Worst picks – Markkanen, B Wallace, T Jones
      • High level thoughts – Great defensive team, shooting doesn’t look awesome, probably light on threes
    • Edsortails
      • US – 42
      • Best picks – Walker, Pressey, Reed
      • Worst picks – Ingles, Moon, Bogut
      • High level thoughts – I suspect shooting could be a real challenge for this team but the defense looks pretty stellar
    • Ty84moss
      • US – 40
      • Best picks – Nurkic, A Johnson, English, Nash
      • Worst picks – Bledsoe, Bane, G Hill
      • High level thoughts – SG/SF looks a little rough but the point and pivot spots look solid
  • Tier 5 – meh
    • Uptowngbv
      • US – 39
      • Best picks – Bynum, Aldridge, McDyess
      • Worst picks – Harper, Gadzuric, Theis, Rodman
      • High level thoughts – Pretty good players to put around Kobe, should be more competitive than last season
    • Berkelon
      • US – 36
      • Best picks – E Jones, Conley, Favors
      • Worst picks – Valanciunas, Looney, Gibson, Green, McCollum
      • High level thoughts – This team is full of players I like in low cap leagues but not so much for high cap leagues, should be efficient scoring team
    • Jethroeg (!!!)
      • US – 47
      • Best picks – McGrady, D Williams, A Hardaway
      • Worst picks – Cooper, McAdoo, Haywood
      • High level thoughts – Jethro is getting better at this. Still far too much usage but lots of talent on the team. Would be cool if he got a ‘ship.
    • PBandJ
      • US – 43
      • Best picks – G Hill, Powell, Wright, Claxton
      • Worst picks – Wood, Sabonis
      • High level thoughts – Improved draft by PBandJ, just too soon and too poor of a fit for a couple of his high picks
    • Steelers821
      • US – 33 (pending last pick)
      • Best picks – Gortat, Varejao, Roy
      • Worst picks – Covington, Anderson, Siakam, D Davis
      • High level thoughts – Love the fit of McHale and Barkley, one of my favorite pairings in WIS but I didn’t like almost any other pick
    • Gerryred
      • US – 39 (pending last pick)
      • Best picks – Price, Sabonis
      • Worst picks – Evans, Anderson
      • High level thoughts – Last few rounds were pretty rough and I thought the first couple were a little reachy. Good value in the middle.
  • Tier 6 – not looking good
    • Midge
      • US – 37
      • Best picks – Rasheed, R Allen, Cheeks
      • Worst picks – Cowens, Howell, Haliburton, Craig
      • High level thoughts – Towns is an awful fit with KAJ and I just generally did not like many of the picks but midge always makes macaroni out of sh** so I am sure he will do fine
    • NotoriousJ
      • US – 37
      • Best picks – Ewing, Porzingis
      • Worst picks – Draymond, Moses Brown, T Young, J Brown
      • High level thoughts – Hard to say what the strategy is with this team, it looks like threes and rebounding maybe? I have a hard time seeing how everything fits together but CP3 and Ewing are so good that they might be able to drag this team to more wins than expected
    • Dontburnearl
      • US – 36
      • Best picks – Mason, Noah, Chriss
      • Worst picks – Holiday, Mobley, Bagley
      • High level thoughts – Welcome back to Savage, hard to jump back in the deep end. Couple big reaches imo and then a lot of picks on people I don’t think of as Savage players. Bird + George is a nice 2/3.

Still surprised by your dislike of Covington and Anderson. But damn my team is certifiably unusable.

I am not going back to re-watch hours of YouTube videos searching for the explanation. Rob, can you define what you consider to be a "Usable Season"? Is it only quality based? Or do you need to see a minimum amount of minutes for a player to have a usable season?

Given all 24 teams need to fill a minimum of 19300 minutes x 5 teams, how many usable seasons exist in the player pool? 24 x 5 worlds x 5 positions = 600 but how do you factor in backup minutes as a usable season or not or if a player fills multiple positions effectively covering 2 spots.

It is a quality metric, not minutes based and there is a bit over 2000 seasons by my measure.

Actually, to clarify, it is meeting the minimum threshold on each of my primary measures, so not a single metric.

I saw it pre-edit where Simmons was listed 10 times for my worst picks…change it back. I want you to remember what you wrote when we’re playing each other in game 7 of the playoffs and he gets the ball wide open under the basket to seal the game. Wait.

It was funny but it actually wasn't intentional.

Fighting words Rob! My rebounding will be "sus" as you and my kids say - but I think I'm going to do okay.

Current build has less than 9k min total - between all 5 teams - with less than a 70D in the backcourt. and about 60% of front court minutes are above that standard too. Averaging about 700 3s made per team.

You're right about my last 2 picks not being typical Savage seasons, but they are both mostly being used as Bird backups, although Hickson has a quality season I'm going to explore.

Good luck to you and to everyone.

The usable seasons drop is stuck in my head now
3/1/2024 1:36 PM
I've been out of the country since Sunday with my laptop locked in a safe 99% of the time, and I know Rob was more mixed on my squad after the Horford and Calderon picks, so pleasantly surprised to place highly. Big agree on defense, I think I was able to shore up rebounding late but at the expense of having full defensive coverage. It's going to be very different from my teams last season other than the cleanliness carrying over, I have to assume.

We fly back tomorrow so I'll find out what I've got on Sunday. I'm reasonably confident that I added enough pieces to make the puzzle work, just hope it's a pretty picture.
