BNL #8 Draft - APB! Topic

I did just go back and look at Season 7 and I realize now 3 of these owners were in that as well, and the commish was posting all their picks. I guess we just didn't get slowed up by it as much and I didn't take notice. It's odd to me that they don't seem to have played any other leagues besides this one, though. I didn't mean any offense by any of this, just stating my feeling that it's not the ideal league to start in.

Also, if they can't see the forums, that's definitely a disadvantage. Everyone should be reading what's posted here for the daggers especially.

Soo...my next several days will be interrupted by travel, golf, alcohol and old age. Has an APB been sent out for lennyistall? he's my dagger, but I can't do it until he resurfaces for Round 4.

With that said, Obla Di, Obla Da...

My thoughts on all of this:
1 - I agree with redcped that IMO this draft is really not for WIS beginners. I have 50,000 games under my belt and I find this one to be challenging and time consuming. I'm not sure how someone with 0 games played could possibly have any clue about the strategy required. I do like the "mentor" idea but still, it's a lot.
2 - For this theme to be competitive and fair, ALL owners involved need to be paying attention and putting in a reasonable amount of time to assign quality "screw" teams and daggers.
3 - With that said, overall this is a really fun theme. I hope we can get moving here and make it happen.

I know I will do this again ... It seems you need some time to fully understand the subtleties ... And there is luck involved but it is a rather peculiar sort of luck based upon who is assigned as your "antagonist" ... Am actually working on my Pitching right now using 5 Tabs and 5 Teams with 4 Open to the 4 different Rosters and Fifth the Bad Neighbor Team to be Entered ... Quite pleased so far with results 1233 IP and 2.74 ERA ... Need one more SP and then juggle

I've heard from both missing r4 picks today and I expect those picks this evening. One of them just got their r3 pick yesterday because of we had to replace an owner who disappeared without contact.

I acknowledge the argument about the the benefit of veteran owners. I am also a newbie, at least relative to some of you all (probably under 20 seasons). I don't think any of the newbies in question finished last in their divisions in their first try, so I think they are competitive even if less seasoned. My larger concern is that this website in general needs new blood, and we might have to wait for several months between leagues if we don't have newbies. I do think newbies can (and do) read the posts - I am guessing they delay posting privileges to stop the boards from being overrun with spam.

FWIW, I will have a 12 hour drive tomorrow, so I will try to get things updated late tonight, but then I will disappear until late Wed evening. Hopefully people keep get those daggers flying!

“Anyone can read the forums, but only users that have purchased one of our games in the last two years can post in the forums.”

If this is true, then mavioric and lennyistall should be able to post since they played last season. If they can’t, we should have filed a support ticket before the draft, since WIS own rules indicate they should have forum access. Doesn’t really add up.

And if preeves22 had just paid for this season ahead of the draft and left his team in the draft center, he could have posted, too.

Dagger of jpeterso

38 Red Sox, 78 Cubs, 48 Phillies, and 78 Giants

Lets break it down by position -

Catcher - It's 38 Bos Gene Desautels and a bunch of mediocre options. Desautels is the best by far and actually a really good cheap option - this is a possible dagger

1B - he has the great Jimmy Foxx who is expensive at 9.4 million - his second best option is Buckner at 4.4 mil - his cheapest sub is 1.6 million - I thought about daggering Foxx but I think it more likely he uses Buckner rather than spend 11 mil at 1B - so that is a possible dagger to force him to play a combo of folks like Mike Ivie and Dick Sisler - not great but not much worse than Buckner

2B - He has 3 decent options and cheap subs so no dagger here

3B - His only solid options are from SF - Darrel Evans 4.7 or Bos - Pinky Higgins 3.9 - I could dagger one or the other and force the option but no real hurt

SS - His best option by far is 38 Bos Joe Cronin 6.8 mil - his second best option is 78 Chi Ivan Dejesus 5.3 mil - He has one cheap sub and the others are over one million and use up a pick from 78 SF that he would rather use on a pitcher. This is a potential dagger because Cronin is way better but Dejesus is a cheaper serviceable option.

OF - several good options either straight up or platoon -

Pitching - The 38 Sox really only provide Lefty Grove, the 78 cubs provide avg options with Rueschel, Lamp, and Sutter, the 48 phillies provide Dutch Leonard and a couple of relievers I wouldn't want, the 78 Giants provide a ton of help. I could dagger Grove but there are plenty of other players to roster from there. I could dagger Leonard and there aren't a lot of options but he could figure it out.

Final decision - SS - Joe Cronin - 38 Red Sox. For me it came down to Cronin or Desautels. I am interested to see if he wants to try to fit foxx in with a 1 mil sub as a backup and even if I dagger Buckner and he didn't go with Foxx he could go with a platoon that wouldn't be much of a step down. I am choosing Cronin because I think it hurts worse. He may be able to roster Foxx if he goes light at other positions but he is not going to have Cronin and his bat at SS and that is what I would want most if I were him.

Because I also think this team may become more of a pitching team - I dagger Candlestick Park.

Good luck.

I have the thankless task of daggering claytonengel. He chose wisely right off the bat with the '88 A's. They provide decent pitching choices in Stewart, Eck, Nelson as well as some strong outfielders in Canseco and Henderson. His next two teams (the '58 A's and '58 Cards) don't offer much pitching help but I do see really nice pieces like 3B Boyer and 1B Musial and OF Cerv. The 4th team is the '58 White Sox and here we find 2B Fox, C Lollar, and OF Landis as well as two nice SP's in Donovan and Pierce.
I have to admit there are really good affordable options at every position and what's really scary is the fact that low cost back-ups exist at every position as well. In fact, at most positions he has two decent back-ups available. How can this be? As far as pitching is concerned there are 4 decent SP's and several good relievers available. I mean seriously - he's loaded! The only good news for those of us in our division is that he won't be able to roster all of them under that $80 Mil cap.
I'm really stumped as to where I can cause claytonengel the most trouble. There are no obvious dagger targets to be had. I'm going to dagger 1B Stan Musial (.337/.423/.528 at a very nice $5.1 M) which will result in a downgrade at that position and hopefully cause a cascading effect by limiting his choices from the weak '58 Cards roster.
He also can not use Oakland Coliseum.

jonstephen25, for my 2nd dagger you may take a stab at the 1938 Boston Bees.

I paid a lot more attention to the details of this in season 7 when lenny joined (and he is doing his own posting). He paid early, waited a few days, and still lacked posting privileges). I don't really understand why it is working for claytonengel but not for mavioric, and each started in v8. I have not been asking them to prove it, just taking their word based on lenny's experience last fall. But everyone says they can read the forums, and no one has had a problem (yet) with actually forming a team. I have no experience with support tickets on WIS, so I doubt anyone has tried that.
I am willing to look over anyone's shoulders and see if I can help them, but I won't see some of them in person over the next week.

it's fine ermocito. thanks for being commish. It's the best league going for my money and guys are coming around so we'll fill out soon enough. To that end, well played with the dagger jonstephen25. My team is now in shambles. redcped, you may now make a bad situation worse by daggering my 48 Phillies for the coup de grace.

Honestly I just feel badly that it all has to run through you. This is a hard enough league to run even without having to do all this proxy work.

And I am not saying I don’t take them at their word, I just wish WIS would make life a little easier for us.

I will submit a support ticket tomorrow to see if we can get all our owners posting privileges. Better late than never.

I hope everyone can see this, as I tried to post earlier but am not seeing it on here.

I pick the 88 Royals for my 4th round team!
