BNL #8 Draft - APB! Topic

Not much I can do to make life difficult for NebHusker by singling out any of his 1968 Dodgers.

This team has several reasonably decent pitchers, both starters and relievers. He will want to use a few in his final roster but I do not see anyone in particular that screams out. Sutton, Drysdale and Grant would all be borderline worthy and should all make his team.

There may be one hitter that needs further investigation, however.

Backtracking a bit, NebHusker's starting catcher options are extremely dismal (like under .300 OBP dismal) on both the 1968 Cubs (Hundley) and 1988 Phillies (Parrish). Bob Boone from the 1978 Phillies is okay but he will want to use several other players from his first-round team pick. The 1968 Dodgers have a very reasonably priced Tom Haller as their starting catcher. In fact, Haller's .285 batting average was the highest of any primary-postiton catcher in the major leagues that season. He is also an excellent fielder A-/A/A+ and his only lefty-hitting starting catcher. Losing Haller's 534 PA will cause NebHusker to either settle for Hundley or Parrish unless he wants to spend one of his 1978 Phillie roster spots on Bob Boone.

Anyhow, say goodbye to 1968 Tom Haller

Hello All!

I can know post for some reason! Glad WIS fixed itself for me...

eman7400 offered me his 38' Indians to dagger. Boy, is this interesting. Your teams have lined up quite well with each other in terms of positional depth. But, it's very clear that the starting pitching on this team is NOT going to be on your team. Especially when you can get a solid pitching crew from your other teams in Don Sutton, Burt Hooton, and Bert Blyleven = 24M and the options are as near expensive whilst being all near 4 ERA and WHIP's above 1.3. As such, we gotta look to your hitting on this team. Trosky and Heath are pretty great options both with AVG above .330. The rest of your hitting options are cumbersome but you got to take someone. So who to pick...

Trosky is good but you also have great value in WIllie Stargell, George McQuinn, and Steve Garvey. Jeff Heath on the otherhand, creates a different problem for you. He bats .343 with a .602 SLG! Earl Averill is comparable but a bit more expensive and his SLG drops by a decent amount.

As such, I am daggering Jeff Heath from the 38' Indians.

Glad that I can finally post and absolve all the issues, so that we can enjoy the league!

I have the honor of presenting razorclams with his second round dagger.
His first round dagger by beernoser was brillant. He removed his only cheap backup SS Rob Picciolo of the 78 A's, forcing him to spend a wasteful 2.5 million on a backup. That said backup also happens to be on the team that I was given to dagger, those same 78 A's.
Say goodbye to SS Mario Guerrero. You now have the luxury of spending at least 8 million at shortstop with Kubek and Rogell or 9.5 million if you take Reese and one of the others and all those wasted at bats. Have fun with that!

Not to hurry the process but I think I have completed my Team ... To me it is something figured out so as not to have to think about it anymore ... Was fun sort of but not easy ... I will contemplate quietly as in musing on how I might improve it but don't think there are any possibilities that make the Team better

Do I post it here ?

I had to do without 1978 Amos Otis in the OF and have last year 1968 Mickey Mantle in RF ...
Do not know what to think of my Pitching Staff --- how it will perform
Was able to keep entire infield that I chose as Starters
People often do post their teams here and do a little writeup about how they arrived at the final roster. It's nice to show the daggerers how they impacted your choices and see how you solved the puzzle.

I also have finalized my roster.

Luckily for me, both daggers took out players I did not have in my plans. Santo was a good choice, BUT when really digging in to the build, it would of hurt much more to lose either SS Larry Bowa or my only low cost SS in $200K Jackie Gutierrez (both of whom eman7400 mentioned as possible targets). I can now roster both and although Bowa isn't great he is much better than my other options. I still have a "pretty good" 78 Mike Schmidt to plug in at 3B.

calhoop's 2nd dagger pick of C Tom Haller also made sense and was well thought out, but I had already penciled in Bob Boone there. I do like Haller's A+ arm but in this league I don't expect a bunch of Rickeys or Maurys running wild. I also respect calhoops thinking that I might already have a bunch of 78 Phillies in mind so no room for Boone. This is where my 2nd screw team of the 68 Dodgers came in huge for me. Although the hitting on that team is dismal with a capital D, the pitching is so good that I only ended up using two 78 Philly relief pitchers, giving me room for Boone.

All in all I have a pretty good $80M team to offer, especially on the pitching side. With an all 1968 rotation of Fergie Jenkins, Don Drysdale, Don Sutton, and Bill Hands, this team will be competitive.

I got in at 2am so I am just getting to this. I will try to get page 1 updated before the evening.

Here is what people should do with rosters - they need to be double checked before you get the MLB code for the league.

Your full roster here.
Sort it by original team (6-7 each)
Identify the primary position and salary assuming for each player.
Confirm the total salary amount (under 80m) and stadium.
Then I can double check against the eligible players and make sure it meets all the rules - once it does, I will convey it is approved and add that on page 1 as well.

Here is the link from last version, with lots of good examples on the last 2-3 pages: https://www.whatifsports.com/forums/Posts.aspx?topicID=540145&page=24&TopicsPage=0

p.s. I am concerned about at least one manager slowing us back. If you have immediate suggestions on solving that problem if not fixed before tomorrow, please message me. We have normally not done things like have a manager handle a 2nd team (opposite league), but maybe that is a better fall back option than waiting to find a volunteer from ourside our 24.

I had to do without chosen $6.9 Mil 1978 Amos Otis in CF ... It seems as if I would not have been able to use the Daggered OF Kiner even at $6 Mil!

Do not know what to think of my Pitching Staff --- how it will perform ... I would have chosen the Daggered 1968 Stan Bahnsen -- but even at $7.5 Mil he seems in retrospect too expensive ! ...

Would not have chosen Daggered Royal Stadium -2 OF just fine but Singles Doubles Triples a bit too daunting for my Pitching Staff I think
