OVR vs Core Ratings Topic

It has long been considered more important for a players core ratings to be strong with much less consideration given to OVR. However, I'm noticing an increasing trend of people looking more for players with higher OVR and less importance given to some shortcomings in some core ratings. Do you believe this to be warranted and a switch in the manner in which the game is working?

No.

Nah. Are those experienced owners or relative newcomers? Guessing it is those with less experience. Part of the learning curve.

They aren't all that inexperienced and their record shows them having some success. Most are showing more than 50 seasons, with more than you would expect having more than 100. Just wondering when someone flipped that switch?

I'll take lower OVR guys all day. They're cheaper and more likely to sign a second LT contract.

The only two times I pay attention to OVR is when 1) planning future season budgets since OVR is the only factor in a players contract demands which makes predicting contract costs very easy and 2) planning for whether or not I'll get a comp pick if the guy walks.

One of the holy grails in HDB is the extremely low DUR C's that got two DITR bumps who have god tier defensive and offensive ratings. They can't contribute much in the regular season but who cares, they'll crush it in the playoffs. They're practically a sure thing to re-sign and only cost $1-$3M.

Guys like Louis Graham (who paradoxically wasn't great in the playoffs but that's probably just a sample size issue)

I once picked one of those super backup Catchers at #30 in the first round. Got ten ML seasons out of him, averaged 220 ABs per season with a lifetime .790 OPS. Most he ever made was $490k a season.

Alex Pena is a catcher with 87 PC who has put up a .317/.423/.612 career line for me in about 350-400 ABs a season. His OVR is 68 and I wouldn't trade him for a guy with an OVR in the 90s.

My guess is you're running into owners who are just using OVR as a shorthand for the kinds of players they're looking for. But I agree with everyone else here, I don't find it as useful as core ratings.

Myself, I don't even really pay attention to my guys' overall ratings. I care a lot more about my hitters getting to 80+ power or 70+ vL/vR splits. Couldn't tell you what the overall ratings even are for the vast majority of my roster.

A hair over $15m as an IFA. I was stunned when I landed him because I just threw my entire IFA budget at him and figured I would get outbid, but it never happened. Apparently he told other teams he wouldn't take more because it would create too much pressure.
