dagger for whalers10

You have 1979 Boston Red Sox, 1979 SF Giants, 1979 Atlanta Braves and 1969 Detroit Tigers

Position by position overview:

C - On the surface, there isn't much here. Only one option, which does look like a serious candidate, but you can maneuver around to fill any voids this may create but I need to move on.

1b - Lots of options for you here. Next

2b - Several well-balanced options. All have PA/162 in the range of 213-362 and nobody all that good. No help from me sorting this puzzle.

3b - Too many options here to really have any impact

SS - One really good option for this league and a lot of weak options otherwise. Definitely worth serious consideration. Feels like this option may be so obvious that I should stop the search here but I may as well turn over the rest of the rocks.

OF - Gotta love 1979 Fred Lynn but he is over $9.3mm. Given how cheap some of your options are going to have to be, you may just fit him in. Too many other outfielders to really think about.

SP - Your collective starting pitching staff is pretty miserable. Only 6 guys over 200 IP/162. One is decent (325 IP and an ERC# of 271 and workable pricing, which translates to pretty good in this league. All the other 200+ IP guys have ERC# over 3.

RP - A couple of nice options but nobody worth daggering.

So who will it be? The good SS or the best SP??

Going to go with 1969 Denny McLain of the Tigers as your daggered player.

Stadiums: Looking at Fenway, Candlestick, Atlanta Fulton County or Tiger.

Candlestick Park is the only pitchers park so it is daggered, as well
Damn, but pretty much as expected.

ermocito you may throw the second dagger at my 79 Braves.

Beernoser - You have a good mix of teams and I couldn't find any glaring weaknesses for me to exploit with your 1st dagger. There are options at most positions with fairly affordable backups. You don't have a lot of pitching (but most of us have that problem). At first glance I thought about daggering one of your SP's from the '79 Dodgers (Sutton, Hooton) but then I took a look at your 3rd team. Those '79 White Sox sure don't offer you a lot to work with - and you might have trouble finding 6 players to use from that team. I see that you have decent outfielders available elsewhere but if Chet Lemon was in your plans you'll have to make some changes.
1st dagger - OF Chet Lemon and Dodger Stadium

Well this is probably deeply misguided but give me the 1929 Washington Senators

and for the final pick of round 4, I'll go with the 29 NY Giants. Will post kentol's dagger tonight and offer my own.

Midknight:

C: 2 quality catchers and cheap backups
1B: The Expensive Hernandez and several cheap backups
2B: Plenty of options
3B: Only 1 cheap bacup Bill Stein, We dagger him and you hve to over spend at 3B
SS: Three 5M+ SS and only 2 cheap backups. We dagger Milbourne and you have to roster the man they named the Mendoza line after. Enough said.
OF: 2 Quality OFs Mantle and Jones and plenty of middling backups
SP: Art Ditmar is a stud. We dagger him and your staff is without an ace.
RP: Littell and Shantz,. Shantz gives you 100 excellent left handed innings. Dagger him and you only have 1 quality reliever.

So with that we dagger the 31HR A/A .513 slugging 21-24 SB exrtemely valuable priced Mickey Mantle and his home ballpark Yankee Stadium.

eman7400 - 2nd Dagger target: 1929 Detroit Tigers

If you are invested, hopefully the recent market slide didn’t hit you too hard, but I am going to hit your Little Red Machine to the tune of $700K.

Your 3x Reds provide you with a number of hitting options and even without ace Bucky Walters you should be able to cobble together an adequate pitching staff. The 29 Tigers provide some decent bats in Alexander, Gehringer, McManus, Rice and Heilmann. By far their weakest link is at shortstop with Heinie Schuble at $1.2M and Yates Wuestling at $520K. Your Reds teams are thin at shortstop limiting your options at the position. My guess is Ole Yats had a guaranteed roster spot as your backup man at short, but not any longer. Your 2nd dagger from the 1929 Tigers is Yats Wuestling and his $520K salary. I expect this will put Heinie Schuble on your team costing you $700K.

In this league every dollar counts.

p.s. I don’t think I have ever seen a pitching staff like the 29 Tigers with 6 pitchers salaries under $900K. You’ve got some doozies to chose from if you need some help with your $80M cap.

vilefileman - As you noted, I tried to give you multiple dagger options so you wouldn’t dagger MY FAVORITE PLAYER OF ALL TIME!!!!

Thanks a lot…

after reviewing your team i think i will use the dagger to eliminate Mazzilli, Lee.

he is by far you best first baseman and with two cheep options as starters there it would not have been hard to roster him as an outfielder and play him at first.

you will also not be able to play in yankee stadium.

whalers10 - I was able to find solid builds with 2.5 million to spare, including your top 3 OF and top 3 SP. Nearly all the Braves in those builds are bench players or easy to swap if they can start. Only a couple of options stand out to me.

Chaney would cost you an extra million. That's worth considering. But you would use Metzger to hit your SF quota.
Horner is 1m cheaper than Royster and a better hitter. That's worth considering. But his fielding is worse.

Frias pushes you to spend nearly 3 million extra for Burleson's golden glove. That's worth seriously considering.
Niekro is a FAR stronger SP than Torrez or others, and I think you can afford to roster him.
So, it is Niekro vs Frias.

I decided to dagger 1979 Phil Niekro because I doubt the financial hit from the Burleson alternative would have as much effect on the quality of your starting players as losing a high IP starter who is clearly in your top 3 SP. You could still outhit others, and your bullpen should hold if you get a decent lead.

My 4th round repick is the 1969 Kansas City Royals - sorry for the mistake

redceped - for the 2nd dagger of my Mantleless ship of fools, take your best shot at the 1969 Chicago White Sox.

calhoop - Last Dagger for you and after looking over your teams it seems the only thing to take away from you from those Rangers is a pitcher with some nice numbers or their best hitter in Buddy Bell.

But then I start to look at positions deeper and you have no backup 1B on any of the 4 teams and your cheapest 1B is on the Rangers at just over $3M. Your next cheapest will cost you $4.6M and another $4.67M to fill the roll of two 1B's. I have to dagger Pat Putnam.
