0-4 to start Round 2. Whoo, boy, this year sure is starting off well.

I knew this ahead of time, but it's worth mentioning again. Cy Young is no Ed Walsh. It's obviously early, but my 3rd overall pick (in the Top 16 draft), the 1911 Braves, is my 2nd worst team so far, and my two Cy Youngs are a combined 1-3.

It's mostly due to my offense though. '01 Mike Donlin won't finish the season with a slash line of .097/.176/.097. '06 Harry Steinfeldt won't finish at .176/.176/.235. '11 Bill Sweeney won't finish at .152/.263/.182. Buck Herzog won't finish at .130/.167/.174.

Anybody else seeing a high number of 1-0 games? I've been involved in 9 so far (2-7 record).

The good: 10 of my 16 teams are over .500 through 14 games
The bad: My #1 overall pick (1912 Cubs) and #3 overall pick (1911 Braves) are two of my six teams not over .500.

1/8/2025 1:34 PM
My worst team is my top 16 pick. My 2004 Twins are 5-9.
1/8/2025 1:57 PM
It's early, but the top teams (those with 10+ wins thru 14 games) have an average draft pick within the league of 11.7 and an average draft pick within the franchise of 5.9.

Don't you just love when you move a pitcher's role around and his pitch counts get reset and you don't remember to check it? Gosh, that always works out so well.

Reminds me of this sketch:

My Giants team has gone from 15-3 and the best team in the tournament to 15-14, with an 11 game losing streak and counting.

I legit wonder what the point is in managing teams in this game. Might as well just draft teams and leave them for 162 games, since any matchups or strategic decisions have no concrete impact on results.

No team with '08 and '09 Mathewson should ever lose 11 straight games. Period.

It's truly remarkable how mediocre I am at this game. I am the manifestation of mediocrity.

Mama told me there would be days like this. Just went 1-8 in the am session and my 1 win was against one of my own teams.

It's become painfully obvious that my #3 overall pick (1911 Braves) was a terrible choice. The team is 14-23 (.378) and I don't really see any signs of improvement. Sure, a 4-9 record in 1-run games is unlucky, but the expected winning% is still only .438.

The main culprits of the underperformance... Mike Donlin & Cy Young

My two best real life hitters are 1905 Mike Donlin (.356, .413, .495) and 1901 Mike Donlin (.340, .409, .475). Who could have forseen that these two players would be my team's *worst* hitters. 1905 Donlin is at .248, .329, .295 while 1901 Donlin is at .243, .310, .333. Literally my two worst full-time batters.

While 1901 Cy Young is doing ok (3-5, 2.92), 1908 Cy Young has been an abomination. His real life stats are 0.89 whip, .214 oav, 1.92 erc#. In the sim, he is 3-4, 6.33 ERA. His away stats are very alarming (37 IPs, 68 hits, 42 ERs, .382 oav, 10.22 ERA).

I would argue that it's impossible to win when your best SP and your two best hitters turn out to be your team's three worst players. And throw in being unlucky in 1-run games on top of that.

Now 3-11 in 1-0 games. Sigh...

4 out of the last 10 games for my 1905 WS were 1-0 affairs. 1 win and three losses. They are the 1905 White Sox (1 year away from the "hitless wonders" 1906 Championship team) so it foes not seem out of line for them.

As we reach the quarter pole in the season, it's time to post the biggest offensive underachievers, measured by OPS difference. Let's put it in the universe so things will start to regress to the positive. In an unlimited cap, a 250-300 OPS points difference is not that uncommon. Let's use 350 OPS points difference as a minimum.

I will start...

1961 Elston Howard (1966 New York Yankees)
Real Life Stats: .348, .387, .549 (.936 OPS)
Sim stats: 81 ABs, .210, .238, .235 (.473 OPS)
Difference: 463 points
.
1977 Ken Singleton (1975 Baltimore Orioles)
Real Life Stats: .328, .438, .507 (.945 OPS)
Sim stats: 60 ABs, .183, .234, .200 (.434 OPS)
Difference: 511 points
.
1929 Lew Fonseca (1923 Cincinnati Reds)
Real Life Stats: .369, .426, .532 (.958 OPS)
Sim stats: 86 ABs, .221, .261, .314 (.575 OPS)
Difference: 383 points
1/16/2025 2:32 PM
Only two on my four teams:

2017 J.D. Martinez (2023 Dodgers)
RL: .302/.366/.741 (1.107)
Sim: .190/.239/.270 (.509)
Difference: 598

2002 Torii Hunter (2004 Twins)
RL: .289/.334/.524 (.859)
Sim: .197/.248/.231 (.480)
Difference: 379

I have a couple Yankees in the low 300s. Boog Powell for my O's just misses the cut at .343 below RL, but I suppose if I wait another cycle he might get there. Same with 2012 Jason Heyward (340 points), 2018 J.D. Martinez (338), and two other Dodgers just above 300. Seems to be a Dodger problem. Also a J.D. Martinez problem.
