So really it's Soto, Cano and Hader versus Arrieta, Tatis and Melancon. While Arrieta is awesome, the offensive gap is huge while the pitching gap is mitigated since 2022 still gets Darvish and Snell. Will be interesting to see how it plays out since we'll be in the same division!
I agree the offense is upgraded on the 2022 roster, but 2021 also has Darvish and Snell. So shouldn't the comparison be between Arrieta and the 300-400 innings of somebody else?
Yeah, I guess I what I was trying to (poorly) articulate is this:
2021 rotation: Arrieta, Arrieta, Snell, Darvish, Lamet (+ relievers)
2022 rotation: Snell, Snell, Darvish, Darvish, Lamet (+ relievers)
So really, Arrieta is replacing one Snell and one Darvish. So 2022 doesn't get Arrieta but they can take a clone of Snell + Darvish, which had been kinda "wasted" by 2021.
Had they only had, say Darvish and not Snell, now 2022 would have to "replace" the Arrieta innings with, say, Joe Musgrove x2 an that would be a bigger gap.
All that said, the difference between Arrieta (two seasons under 2.00 ERC#) and the worse clone of Snell (2.57 ERC#) + Darvish (2.37 ERC#) is still pretty big.
