FC Dynasty Cup XVI- Cotopaxi Back-to-Back Champion Topic

Got a message this afternoon from Swamp U saying they accept the results on the 8th and 10th. Assuming I don't hear otherwise from colin, I'll post the results in a couple of days when the other Quarterfinals series start to get underway.

I'll accept any of the three options and continue to appreciate your efforts at making this tourney much more interesting than anything in the SEC this year;

Then we have a consensus. The Quarterfinals game results from the 8th and 10th will be posted tomorrow and the SEC Conference is boring.

Alright. Sorry, guys. I'm getting distracted by real life stuff. The Quarterfinals opened up today (well actually five days ago but they are being posted today.)

The #1 seed SwampDragons United got things going in Canada when #9 Merchiston FC flew into town. A fairly quiet first half got lively in the final minute when both teams knocked one home. Benecroft Noblit hit a shot through Merchiston goalie Jean-Martin Swerts to get the Dragons on the board but Math Boyes picked up a rebound that Dragons goalie Jaxon Hebert saved but couldn't clear and volleyed a shot that easily found the corner to make the score 1-1 at halftime.

The 2nd half started the way the first half ended, with a quick goal by Merchiston midfielder, once again Math Boyles, to make it 2-1 for the Scottish club, Despite numerous shot by both clubs, the game ended as a 2-1 Merchiston victory. The return game was in the evening at Merchiston's home park in Scotland. 47,000+ came to watch and were not disappointed. The Dragons immediately tied the aggregate at 2-2 with a nifty piece of dribbling and an even better scoring touch by Golden Toe leader Jerrad Forko . The game remained this way until a single defensive lapse cost the Dragons the semifinals as Giovanni Léonard found himself completely unmarked and knocked in an easily header. That score game Merchiston the 3-2 lead and they packed it in tight to secure the series with a 1-1 game draw and a 3-2 aggregate, ending a great tournament run by Swamp U.

In the other action tonight, #6 VB Hibernian hit the road against #7 Southeast Indiana Football Club and cushed the American squad. Tedric Frame scored four times as Hibs raced out to a 4-0 lead before Indiana veteran forward Robbie Harley scored a pair of goals to avoid the shutout. Hibs added three more tallies before the end of the game to take a massive 7-2 road win. Frame's output moves him into solo 2nd with 9 goals in the books and, since leader Jerrad Forko of Swamp U has been eliminated, becomes the highest remaining goal scorer in the race for that prestigious award., although Forko can still win the Golden Toe if nobody surpasses him.

Two games on the 14th as well as the first Bums Semi.

A 2nd team has seen their way through to the Semifinals as #6 VB Hibernian closed out #14 Southeast Indiana Football Club with an 8-2 aggregate after their win this evening. The series was already well out of hand after the 7-2 thumping from a couple of days ago and Indiana needed a road miracle in order to survive. While no miracle was in the making, they played a much more competitive game this time around. Pressing the entire game...and Hibs being content to absorb the pressure...Indiana out-possessed and out-shot the English side but was unable to put one in the back of the net. Hibernian, rather, got the game's only tally on an early counter-attack when Tedric Frame scored off a corner kick, which was all that was needed to give the home side the 1-0 victory. The goal brings Frame with 2 goals of the L'Orteil D'or lead going into the Semifinals.

#13 Swamp City Dragons, a dangerous club to be seeded so low, opened their series against #5 Wolfsburg Dynamit with a 3-1 home win in Canada. Wolfsburg got on the board first with a Donall Tubney header that beat Dragons goalie Huenu Palomino to the far post but Swamp City immediately countered when Lou Zimmern hit a header of his own. With the score now tied at 1-1, the Ageless One permanently changed the momentum as Arley Movsisyan used his 113 year old right foot to volley a perfect shot into the upper corner and a 1-0 Wolfsburg lead turned into a 2-1 deficit in the span of two minutes. Zimmern added some 2nd half insurance as the Dragons will take a two goal advantage to Lower Saxony on the 17th.

In The Bums Semi, the #1 seed is proving that they are indeed the team to beat as FC Edinburgh Bullet Birds easily beat #4 FC Kingston 4-0 on the road, putting 12 shots on goal and converting on more than Kingston had for the entire game. The game was actually tied at 0-0 going into the half but the young English forward Daylin Plunkett scored a pair of goals to put the game away. The teams will travel back to Scotland tomorrow to finish the series, with the Bullet Birds now the heavy favorite.

We have games in both brackets tomorrow as the playoff continue.

The Quarterfinals game today is at 7pm but the Bums Semi game was earlier in the day. #1 FC Edinburgh Bullet Birds has advanced to the first ever...not sure what to call it...the Bums Finals, after a draw against #4 FC Kingston, giving them the 6-2 aggregate series win. Stewart Cassy opened up the scoring to make it a 5-0 Bullet Birds lead with his 19th minute header and Edinburgh put it on cruise control after that. Kingston was able to erase the goose egg and score a couple of goals, the last one by Joel Anunciacion with only a minute or so of game time left to salvage the draw but the top seed held form and will now await the winner of the #3 FC Cackalacky/#7 Not Very United matchup.

Be back in a couple of hours for the other game.

The evening game has gone final and the defending Champs are looking every bit like a team on a mission. Playing the series opener on the road in #10 FC Trojans of SC's home stadium that was packed with 50,000 fans, #2 Club de Fútbol Deportivo Cotopaxi looked calm and composed, taking it to the Americans from almost the opening bell. David Mesa, who had only scored once in the tournament, doubled that in the game, including a 2nd minute blast that Trojans goalie Dantrell Gonzalo muffed to allow Cotopaxi the very early 1-0 lead. Zackary Cunningham, who hadn't scored at all in Cup XVI, got his first in the 10th minute and it was 2-0 before half of the sellout crowd had found their seats from the concessions. Udayle Velázquez did get one back for the home team in the 60th minute but it was way too much Ecuadorian spice for the American's taste. Mesa's 2nd goal in the 62nd ended the scoring as Cotopaxi takes the opener 4-1. The teams travel back to Quito on the 17th for the series finale with the Trojans needing to change it up big time.

Tomorrow is an off day in both brackets and then the Quarterfinals have both remaining scheduled games, barring sudden death.

The Quarterfinals concluded this evening as we got a decision in the two remaining series that were still outstanding. The Champs title defense continues after their 5-5 draw against #10 FC Trojans of SC, giving #2 Club de Fútbol Deportivo Cotopaxi the 9-6 aggregate victory. It was a fairly wild game that saw equally wild momentum swings. Cotopaxi initially jumped out to a 4-1 lead on the strength of two Weyland Watkins goals in the first 27 minutes. Then, the Trojans had a run of their own with three unanswered to tie the game at 4-4 after Hamza Anderson had a point blank shot in the 57th minute that he did not miss. But playing level wasn't going to cut it and, unfortunately for the Trojans, level was the best they could muster. Cotopaxi goes through to the Semifinals and the Trojans will be regrouping for Cup XVII.

In the other quarters matchup, #13 Swamp City Dragons becomes the only double-digit seed to advance as they dispatch #5 Wolfsburg Dynamit with a 7-3 aggregate after today's 4-2 road win. Wolfsburg's entire offensive output came from defender Ernest Winkler, who had yet to score in the tournament. Despite is great individual effort, Swamp City scored four times between his two goals. Lyle Lensky led the way for the Dragons with a pair of goals as he moves into solo 3rd place in the Golden Toe Tracker.

I'm going to take tomorrow off and then set up the Semifinals.
3/17/2025 8:49 PM
The Semifinals are set and ready for action. The semis time frame is Mar 19th thru Mar 29th so start scheduling away. The semis is a home and away and we'll need a clear winner. An aggregate tie will force a sudden death. The winners go to what everyone has been playing for, the Championship Round while the two losing teams will play a single game for the 3rd Place honor, hosted by the team with the higher playoff seed.

32 entries are now down to four and, for a 2nd consecutive Cup, VB Hibernian and (of course) Club de Fútbol Deportivo Cotopaxi have advanced to the penultimate round. Good luck to them and to our other semifinalists, Swamp City Dragons and Merchiston FC. Between these four teams, we have 4 Cup Championships, three Runner Ups and three 3rd Place finishes, so we should have some fireworks.

The Bums semis resume on the 20th.

On a programming note, all Semifinals Knockout games have been scheduled with all being played on the 24th and 25th...so the round may be a quick one.

There was a Bums Semi game played earlier this evening when #3 FC Cackalacky hosted #7 Not Very United for the right to advance to the lower bracket finals. 50,802 showed up to give their usually fanatical support to the Cacklacky club and they witnessed a back and forth game that got a little wild at times. Tate Papia took a free kick from a dangerous position in the 2nd minute and got one over the wall and past Cackalacky goalie Georges Müller for the very early 1-0 United lead. Sinai Kupferstoch then knocked in a header a few minutes later to draw back level and it was like this the entire match. After United took its final lead of the game off a Tila Quirola shot in the 48th, Cackalacky worked their way into one final good scoring chance with a free kick with 5 minutes to go. Casper Jansen lined up the shot, bent the ball around the wall and beat United goalie Marlon Knowles clean to the corner to end the game at 3-3 and decide absolutely nothing as to which team will advance.

We'll find out tomorrow as both teams travel north to Canada with FC Edinburgh Bullet Birds awaiting the winner.

Weyland Watkins (with his 9 this cup so far) needs 2 to tie and 3 for sole possession of the all time FC Dynasty Cup scoring record. I’m not currently planning on resigning him, at 35 and making 1.8m it’s tough to fit that contract in every year, so he needs to go big in the semi’s cause this is likely his last hurrah.

Bring on the Bullet Birds!!!

Nope. Watkins will need to be content to finish his career as solo 2nd. Arley Movsisyan has scored another 8 goals this tournament and now sits at 68 for his career. I don't think he'll ever be caught.
