Players who forget how to play a position... Topic

I have a team where my starting shortstop and back-up shortstop will not be shortstops next season. They both turn into second basemen, and I have Roberto Alomar so I will trade both of them because a Hall of Famer needs limited backup. I would keep Jody Reed at SS but he no longer "knows" how to play the position. I have another team where my platoon 3B will "forget" how to play the position next season.

I doubt anything could be done about it, but since this is "WhatIfSports," it would be nice if once a player plays a position for a significant number of games (to be determined?), they can still play that position in subsequent seasons. I know there are headaches, because if Bobby Murcer "stays" at shortstop, how do you figure his fielding numbers? Or we could be talking Stan Musial at 1B or Jimmy Foxx at 3B, or other examples where somebody "forgets" how to play a position from the pervious season.

Not saying that Mel Ott learns to play 3B early, but once he plays it, he can play it without being a D+/D+ fielder.

I know this is minor, but it is giving me small headaches in a couple of leagues, and I wanted to vent, and I thought others might have similar stories they could share to easy our pain.

A they say these days, thank you for your attention to this matter!

I don't know...I think that creates a bunch of challenging problems from a programming standpoint that can only be answered arbitrarily:
-- How many games counts as "knowing how to play a position"?
-- If he's going to get a grade, how will it be assigned? By his most recent grade? By his most recent grade, but decreased by some arbitrary amount?
-- How long does his positional memory last? Can Pete Rose still play 2B in 1969? 1973? 1980?
-- If a guy moves to an easier position on the defensive spectrum in real life, that's quite often for a reason (i.e. age or injuries have decreased his skill). Ernie Banks moving from SS to 1B in the 1960s, for example. It would seem very odd to me to have Banks still able to play SS in WIS in, say, 1965.

All in all, I think the way WIS handles out of position fielding adjustments pretty well takes care of the matter. You can play a guy at any position you want. He will be penalized, and the degree of penalty will be greater depending on big a move it is.

No offense Yogi but I tend to agree w/ C23. WhatIFSports...forget the name tries to at least be some sort of realistic albeit combining players from different years. If someone didnt play SS in a given year then you can play them there but pay a penalty. I wouldnt rewrite the entire outdated coding to solve for some anomoly like that. It has other flaws that are in more need of addressing in my opinion. Here is one....

Hal McRae was a decent fielder earlier in his career until surgeries basically prevented him from throwing a ball.....do you think his DH years should have an OF rating?

Basically, the issue above is NOT a WIS problem. It is just a gap for a progressive league (a subset of all available league options) for a given year (a further subset)....so by definition...an anomoly that is not material to 90%+ of owners on this site.
