I agree that not a great businessman and the only thing that protected him against losing his money was being a good PT Barnum giving himself opportunities based on his celebrity and being comfortable with illegality - his joyful willingness to grift and bully and steal with no compunction. Being a sociopath gave him places to go and ways to earn that normal people who have a conscience could not have.
