NL West - San Francisco - 78-84 - 14 game improvement YoY

San Francisco made a big jump, from a 64 win team to a 78 win team. After being near the bottom of the league a year ago, this past season they were just below average in pitching (using runs scored/against), and the defence was above average. The offense remains poor, with a lack of power (97 homers) as a key challenge. Last season, the franchise had a $54M payroll, and has $12M in committed salaries for next year (several expiring vets and arb eligible young players - 15 aged 28 and younger). The team has its draft picks from the past couple seasons (including #2 last year), and was lightly active on the international market. This team has a lot of flexibility, but still needs a few more elite players before making the leap to being a contender.

Cuba has been claimed. However, New Orleans has become available:

NL South - New Orleans - 95-67 - Wild Card team

New Orleans was the top Wild Card team in the NL last season, but they lost in 5 games in the first round. They won 108 games last year before, and have made the playoffs in 11 consecutive seasons. They had a modest $84M payroll last year. There should be modest payroll room to add to the ML roster, if desired. The ML team has a lot of quality players, but the team is another year older. An incoming owner will have to choose how to maximize this franchise's future.
