Draft Procedures
Following the season, we will conduct a draft for eligible players not currently assigned to a roster for the subsequent season. Teams earn one draft pick per player under 25 on their roster.

Draft Order Determination
Draft order is based on the total number of losses over the previous two seasons. For example, the 1960 draft order is determined by combined losses from the 1958 and 1959 seasons.
The four teams with the highest loss totals will participate in a weighted lottery to establish the top four picks in the first round only. Weights are distributed as follows: 40% for the most losses, 30% for the second-most, 20% for the third, and 10% for the fourth team. Random.org will be used to conduct the lottery.
All remaining teams are placed in descending order by losses for their respective picks. Subsequent rounds continue following the loss-based order.
In cases where two teams have identical loss totals, the team with more current-season losses receives the higher odd-round pick; this alternates in even rounds. If two tied teams are included in the lottery, the team with more current-year losses earns a higher lottery percentage.

Add/Drop Procedures
Add/drop transactions will commence no sooner than 24 hours after the draft concludes. For example, if the final pick occurs on Monday at 4:30 PM EST, add/drop begins Wednesday at 12:00 AM EST.

Expansion Draft Details
  • The expansion draft will take place following the conclusion of the 1977 season.
  • It will utilize a serpentine format.
  • Draft order is determined randomly via Random.org.
  • The expansion draft will consist of 18 rounds, with the first 16 rounds being mandatory.
Eligible Players for Expansion Draft
Teams may protect a maximum of 13 players from their roster who are active during the 1978 season. Players on injured reserve for the 1978 season do not count against this protection limit. Any unprotected player becomes available in the draft. No single team may lose more than five players; once this threshold is reached, all remaining undrafted players from that team return to the original roster.
Any player left undrafted during the expansion draft reverts to their original team.

1978 Rookie Draft
Expansion teams receive the first four picks of the 1978 rookie draft. They will select in reverse order (4, 3, 2, 1) of the expansion draft for odd-numbered rounds and in the same order (1, 2, 3, 4) for even-numbered rounds. Remaining teams are ordered by total losses in 1976 and 1977.

1979 Rookie Draft
For the 1979 rookie draft, standard rules apply except expansion teams will have their 1978 loss totals doubled for ordering purposes.
