To paraphrase the great Jimmy Dugan, if it wasn't maddening, everyone would do it. The maddening... is what makes it great.
I've had season tickets to my favorite college basketball team for 20+ years. I swear, some of those game, boy, how I don't have a heart attack I will never know. The atmosphere and competition is so intense. And when the team loses it physically hurts me. I met my wife 16 years ago and she wondered why I put myself through all of this (am I a basket case during tight games? um, well, er, yes) and I said, "You can't celebrate the thrilling triumphs if you don't risk the devastating heartbreak."
While she does get over the defeats quicker than I do today, I am proud to say that she, too, suffers, genuinely suffers, through the challenging moments. I feel I've succeeded in this regard.
