I have always said, you don't truly become a fan by your team winning; you truly become a fan by your team losing. If losing doesn't hurt you, you are not a fan. And it's totally OK to not be a fan, but you can't truly say you are one unless you feel abject pain when your team loses.
38 years later, I still get upset every time I see Kirk ******** Gibson’s name much less that Godforsaken replay. Ugh.

Funny, I have the opposite reaction

My big regret about the 1988 World Series is that as Gibson limped to home plate, I turned off the TV. A strikeout was a foregone conclusion. As I walked down the hallway, I heard people yelling inside their dorm room, and that's when I learned about Gibson's HR.

So I was a college freshman that fall, an LA kid transported to Philadelphia. Some friends planned a day trip to NYC for what turned out to be the day of Game 1, but since I'd figured there was no chance the Dodgers could get past the Mets, I made plans to join them. I decided I'd be able to follow the game somehow if we didn't get back early enough, and I managed to get pieces of news as we returned home.

By the time we arrived back at our dorm and found someone with a TV, though, it was the top of the 9th inning. So as luck would have it, I was tuned in and got to see it all unfold live. Still gives me goose bumps.

I have a similar story. I, too, was in my college dorm. I was watching the game, but I had dozed off on my bed leaning back on one of those large stand-up corduroy pillow things that were de rigeur for dorm rooms in those days. I was awakened by the screaming and saw Gibson limping around the bases.

However, I had already seen some of Gibson's heroics in person that postseason. I attended Game 4 of the 1988 NLCS at Shea Stadium. Mike Scoiscia took Dwight Gooden deep in the 9th to tie the game, and then Gibson homered in the top of the 12th to give the Dodgers the lead. The Mets loaded the bases in the bottom of the 12th, and with two outs Lasorda brought in Hershiser, who had pitched 7 innings the night before, to get the last out.

Apparently they still make those pillow things, although I haven't seen one in decades.
