Round 1 - 1928
It was my last night in Las Vegas and I was having my best cash game session of the week when I got the text that I was due up. I honestly didn’t expect the draft to make it that far, so I was not ready to make my pick yet. When I got back to my place, I did some quick research on the laptop and posted 1928 before I went to sleep, since I was leaving early for the airport. The next morning while sitting at the gate, I instantly regretted my pick. You see, I wanted either 1905 or 1911 to go along with 1928. There were only two people drafting behind me and I thought one of those two Group A seasons would make it to me. Not sure if either njbigwig or DarthDurron would’ve taken 1928, but I really wanted Burleigh Grimes (353 innings, 2.58 erc#). He has always done well for me. Although I didn't get him in the other franchise draft, in round 1, he went 28-12, 5.05 in 54 starts (333 innings) and in round 2, he went 22-11, 4.55. Pitcher Joe Dawson (138, 3.24) is only the roster b/c I am required to select two pitchers from this team. This year has one of the better Paul Waner (.359, .437, .539, C+/B) seasons. Pie Traynor (.327, .362, .455, C/A) locks up third base. I have a few choices for my third hitter, but I ultimately chose 1B George Grantham (.323, .399, .479, C-/B) over OF Lloyd Waner (.335, .369, .427, B/A+) because I am overloaded in the OF.
Round 2 - 1987
So I was sitting at the airport waiting for njbigwig to make his round 1 pick. Sure enough, he takes 1905. Then DarthDurron takes 1911. Crap! The boarding process has started and I was trying to figure out what to do. I finally decided on 1990 right about the time njbigwig posted his second round pick… yep… he took 1990. Double crap! It seemed way too early to draft a season like 1912, 1910 or 1906 (just to get a good Honus Wagner), so I started looking at SPs from other groups. I considered 1963, 1965 and 1987. Group D doesn’t have much pitching so I went with 1987. I texted my pick to njbigwig right as the plane with lifting off. I really like Rick Reuschel (227 innings, 2.59). He went 15-10, 3.70 ERA (2nd in the league) for me in the first draft tournament. Jeff D. Robinson (27, 1.82) was 16/18 in saves w/3.80 ERA in the other league. OF Andy Van Slyke (.293, .353, .496, B+/B+) has nice extra base hit numbers (36-11-21) with a 91 speed rating. He can also start at first base (A/B-). Catcher Mike Lavalliere (.300, .378, .354, A+ arm) won’t give up many SBs. 2B Jose Lind (.322, .358, .423, A+/A+) only has 157 PA but is a useful piece. This isn’t a stud season for the 19th overall pick but it’s not bad compared to other Group D seasons.
Round 3 – 2013
Since I decided to wait until the last round to select my Group A season, I decided to draft based on scarcity again. There are only a few good Group E seasons, 2015 and 2014 were already taken so I decided on 2013 because this season provided five useful pieces. I needed a 2B and Neil Walker is good enough (.251, .346, .416, A-/A+) mainly because of his defense. Plus, he is a switch-hitter. He only has 551 PA, so he fits perfectly with Jose Lind. This is only the third best season for Andrew McCutchen (.317, .411, .505, C+/B), but all three are still pretty good. McCutchen is another guy with a great speed rating (89). The main reason I selected 2013 over 2012 is due to three good RPs… Mark Melancon (71 innings, 1.84 erc#), Tony Watson (72, 1.94) and Justin Wilson (74, 2.28) represent the best bullpen I’ve had in any of these drafts. What could possibly go wrong?
Round 4 – 1912
Round 5 – 1951
When I made my third round pick, I already knew I would be able to make both my fourth and fifth round picks at the same time, which is a huge advantage. I was hoping one of 1906, 1910 or 1912 would make it back to me… 1910 and 1912 did. Ironically, so did 1918 and 1920. So, I have a decision to make. I could draft a stud pitcher like ’20 Babe Adams or ’18 Wilbur Cooper and then get my starting SS (Dick Groat) from a 1960’s season or I could go the direction that I ultimately went, which is to add a good Honus Wagner (.324, .389, .503, B+/A) at the expense of getting a good deadball SP. Owen “Chief” Wilson (.300, .336, .520, C/A-) set the MLB triples record in 1912 with 36, so that should be fun. Max Carey (.302, .366, .400, C+/A+) gives me too many OFs, since I also have Paul Waner, Andy Van Slyke and Andrew McCutchen. I’m rostering them all, salary be damned. The downside of selecting 1912 instead over 1920 is that I am going to have to get 50 starts from Claude Hendrix (310 innings, 3.09 erc#) which is a huge downgrade from a guy like ’20 Babe Adams, who didn’t even get drafted. But at least Hank Robinson (188, 2.25) is a very good pitcher, although his performance review numbers aren’t that great.
1951 was a pretty easy decision once I decided on 1912. I needed another catcher and could use a really strong hitter to bat in the middle of my lineup. Despite most teams having at least one good deadball pitcher, I really wanted to roster 1B Ralph Kiner (.309, .451, .624, D/A-). I know he only hit 22 HRs in the first draft tournament, but he’s just too good to pass up, even though I didn’t need another first baseman (maybe I can start Grantham against deadball pitchers) and Kiner vs everybody else. Clyde McCullough (.297, .365, .436, B/C/A+) will platoon at catcher with Mike LaValliere. Both have A+ arms, which is nice. Part-timer Jack Merson (55 PA, .360, .371, .536, C/B+) can pinch hit and play some 2B. The pitching isn’t deep, but Ted Wilks (87, 2.68) is fine. Vern Law (120, 3.96) will only pitch in mop-up duty.
Overall Comment:
I do wonder how this team would have turned out had I drafted 1905 or 1911 with my first pick. Does 1928 make it back to me in round 2? And if so, what do I end up getting in Group D? I was disappointed with my team’s outlook in round 2, but I think it turned out ok. I have a lot of wasted salary with two extra full-time players, but it gives me some flexibility. I can go with Kiner or Grantham at 1B. Paul Waner is an everyday lock, but I have to choose three of McCutchen (R), Van Slyke (L), Carey (S) and Wilson (L) to start at the other two OF spots plus DH. I also could start both Grantham and Kiner and bench two OFs. I have a good balance of lefty, righty and switch-hitters. My defense is very strong. My pitching has two strong SPs with Grimes and Reuschel and five strong bullpen pieces (H.Robinson, J.Robinson, Melancon, Watson, Wilson). I just need ’12 Claude Hendrix to pitch like his performance review numbers (4.05 ERA) and this team could win 90+ games.
