Late Pick II: Baker Bowl
Fun fact: I have actually stood on the mound of the Baker Bowl grounds. I used GPS and an overlay of the old grounds on what is the current lot to pinpoint the exactly spot.
It was one of the most interesting experiences I have ever had, looking back towards center field and seeing more or less the same backdrop they would have seen 100 years ago. The dimensions are just as weird as you would expect. I look towards left, and far away I see a chain link fence, much farther the anywhere I've played or been, even if I move it in a bit to account for where the stands were. Centerfield you see a gas station where the old clubhouse was, but the "hump" in centerfield due to the railroad under the field is still there. Meanwhile that crazy right field, believe it or not is very easy to see and imagine. Where the old Baker wall was is currently a several story high wall of a school bus parking lot. So while standing on the mound, I can see that very tall wall almost on top of me and all i can think to myself was "Holy crap, I'm glad I never had to pitch here."
So even though the Baker Bowl ceased to exist many decades before I was even born, I can honestly say, I was able to experience it about as well as anyone could ever ask for!
