Okkkay, i guess i did that wrong.

Here's the player:
www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx

He has low WE but he will be getting 17-20 minutes a game as a freshman and starting as a sophomore (unless i get a freak recruit next year). He has high potentials in speed, LP, stamina and FT. So that's really only 3 practice areas to unload minutes into. Just looking to see if the amount of minutes will overcome the low WE

More than likely, all of his gains this season will be lost between seasons if you're lucky. I'm not sure how much WE you'll gain this season by playing him those minutes, but starting him I believe boosts it more. I'm sure another coach will be able to pinpoint that more than I. I fall into the same trap you have, where I'll take a gamble on a guy like that with a low WE and every time he breaks my heart when he doesn't reach his potentials. What are his other potentials? If those are the only three with blue, and you have no other black, you have a shot. But I figure he won't reach it until his senior year at least halfway through.

Here is an example of a similar player with about the same amount of potential(Freshman Year), now at the beginning of his junior year. He was blue in REB, DEF, SB, STA, and DUR so only 3 practice areas, plus some minutes for his average in LP. His only high is DEF now, but it has already improved by 18.

Start him all year if you can and try to offer him a redshirt his sophomore year. Zero out his rebounding, low post, and anything else you don't need him to improve in and put all your minutes into the three or four categories you need most.

Agree with Milwood.  Limit the cores you work on, and max out his minutes in those three or four areas.

It's tough but like everyone is saying, pick the rati you want to go up and work on those.

This guy for instance only had 3 high high potentials and one black, so I didn't have that much of a decision to make. While he didn't actually max out in any of those 3 categories, he made significant gains, and I thought he was a solid player. Interesting note, total offseason losses 15 points, redshirt season he gained 16 so that helped negate the losses, if that influences you at all.

I don't know if I just got lucky, but my player only went down 2 in the offseason(14WE), and then went up 7 the next offseason(17WE).

here's a kid who started with a WE of 6 ...colors didnt paste.....but you see the drift

the redshirt season allowed his hoops IQ to get to A's by senior year
4/18/2015 8:58 AM
There's a big difference between 6 and 12 WE....there is also a HUGE difference between 12 and 18.....I suggest starting him as early as possible....a season's worth of starts is worth about 4 points of WE  at 12.....If you can go 12->16->21->26  you have a chance of getting 20+ total points of growth in blue HIHI areas.

Sorry about the formatting above.....I hope it makes sense....also, you are asking the wrong question IMO, it's not if he's maxed out but if he will grow to a useable D2 player
4/19/2015 6:54 PM
Joe,

He's already usable in D2. Everything about him is at the level of a sophomore backup already. At least for my teams. If he is that for 4 years, oh well. I have a depth player that knows the system. He is already useful. Comes in and doesn't turn the ball over, is a good free throw shooter, and gets an assist or two every game. He fouls a bit much right now but hopefully as he learns the Defense that changes.

Else,
Thanks for the tips everyone. I already had high minutes in his high potential areas. 0 in the low reb and 7 in the the medium potential. Is it smart at all to go to 4 or 5 minutes in those? That is usually the point you don't want to dip below but will the extra 6-9 minutes (not at 20 quite yet) in the high potential areas be more useful?

+1. this should be one of 3 standards for recruiting any player, regardless of their WE: (1) will this be a serviceable / useable player on my team (even as a back up); (2) will this be a contributor / starter on my team; or (3) will this guy be able to carry us?

for any recruit that you're going after, EVER, and especially when you're dealing with a low WE player like the one above, you ask yourself (or, if in the forums, the rest of the coaching world) about no. (1); when you have to choose between two players...either 2 recruits or between a recruit and one that you already have on your roster or if you are going to get into a winnable battle, you ask about no. (2) and sometimes no. (3); when you are getting into an all out, spend every last recruiting $ and promise starts and minutes battle, you ask yourself no. (3).

obviously the questions will change by circumstance on a case-by-case basis, but those are my general parameters.
