Spending Your Salary on Hitting or Pitching?
Which is a more effective strategy? Most people tend to spend about the same amount on hitting vs pitching, at least at the lower cap levels. But what if you were forced to pick a side? This league will attempt to figure out which is the more successful strategy.
This will be a standard 24 team league
12 owners must spend at least $55 million on pitching.
12 owners must spend at least $55 million on hitting.
Here's the wrinkle.... the more you spend on your chosen specialty means the better shot you have of making the playoffs. The teams that make the playoffs will be the top 4 teams in salary spent for hitting and the top 4 teams in salary spent for pitching (regardless of league or division). ---> The catch is that your team must win at least 82 games during the regular season (potential tie-breaker games do not count). So the main goal is to build a team that can win at better than a .500 clip, all while spending as much as possible in either hitting or pitching.
Say you want to spend barely over $55 million on hitting, great, you might win 95 games but rank 7th among the teams over .500 in hitting salary spent - no playoffs for you. But, if you go all out and spend $75 million on hitters, sure you'll rank 1st in hitting salary, but might win only 65 games. What is the sweet spot for salary spent on hitting (and on pitching)?
Other key items of note.
*There will be 2 types of each specialty in each division. I will ask a non-participant to generate random divisions given this constraint.
*To remove any bias, all teams will play in WhatifSports Ballpark.
*The playoff will set H1 vs P4, H3 vs P2, H2 vs P3, H4 vs P1, with the winners advancing (i.e., H1-P4 winner plays H3-P2 winner). The seeds are based on salary spent. So a team that finished 82-80 but spent the most on hitting will be seed H1.
*I will select my specialty last. When I build my roster and open the league, I will send my roster to the first person who enters. I will ask that once you enter your roster, you do not remove it.
* Use generic team names at first. Once all teams are entered, I will ask that you change your team name and include the specialty you selected and the salary (i.e., $66.6M Devil on the Mound)
* If in the rare instance that there aren't four teams in one specialty that are over .500, then after seeding the over .500 teams, the next seed would be the team with the record closest to .500 (if tied, then the higher salaried team).
