CONFERENCE OUTLOOK FOR SEASON 163
The MEAC finished #4 in conference RPI in season 162, and placed five teams in the National Tournament. Delaware State and Hampton advanced to the second round, and Howard, North Carolina A&T and South Carolina State made the Big Dance. Florida State made the PI, so half of the conference participated in post season play for the second consecutive year.

The conference said goodbye to two coaches, Stoph and Cuck. Stoph was the second longest tenured coach in the conference at 9 years ay Norfolk State, and Cuck was at the helm of Morgan State for five years. JimmyChino and Rollo75 pick up Morgan State and Morris Brown respectfully. wfudd77 made the jump to Norfolk State as well. These three coaches are all quite talented and should help take the conference to the next level. Unfortunately for this year, second session recruiting was not kind to them and Morgan State and Norfolk State both start the year with three Walk-Ons.

Delaware State looks extremely strong this year with a 761 overall rating (4th best in Division 1). They are still relatively young, with three seniors and two Juniors. Hampton still looks like strong team, despite losing five seniors from the Conference Championship team of last year. South Carolina State also looks to have a very talented and experienced team with 8 upperclassmen. Maryland Eastern Shore is also very experienced with 7 upperclassmen and only one Freshman, so they should be much improved. Florida A&M is also looking strong with three seniors and five juniors. Howard could also surprise again this year with some of their returning talent, and being the only zone team in the conference.

In terms of Athleticism, Delaware State (88) is far and away tops, with Hampton at 72 and South Carolina State at 69. Delaware State is the second most Athletic Team nationally, just behind UCLA (92). Six of the top seven most Athletic Players in the conference are on Delaware State.

Maryland Eastern Shore is the second fastest team in the country at 64, with South Carolina State (61) ranked 17 and Delaware State (60) ranked 19. MES was the fastest team in the conference last year as well. Raul Rodriguez and James Seek of Morris Brown are both 100 Speed.

Defensively, Delaware State (89) is again #2 in the country behind UCLA. Maryland Eastern Shore (73), Florida A&M (70), Hampton, North Carolina A&T and South Carolina State are all tied at 69. Three of the top four and seven of the top 12 defensive players are on the Delaware State roster, led by Nathan Rice at 100.

In Team Rebounding, Delaware State (58) has a sizable advantage over second place Morris Brown (49). Howard, Coppin State and Florida A&M are at (46). Delaware State only has two players under 40 Rebounding, and they are tied for 5th in the country. John McFan, a 5th year senior from Bethune-Cookman is rated at 100, as are Donnell Mitchell of Florida A&M and Chad Badilla of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Morris Brown (51) is strongest in the conference at low post shooting, with Bethune-Cookman and Delaware State at 50. John McFan is at 99 LP and James Blalock of Hampton (98) have the highest individual ratings.

In terms of perimeter shooting, NC A&T (56) leads for the second year in a row, followed by Delaware State (54), South Carolina State (51) and Morgan State (50). Javier Pena of Hampton is a 100 rated shooter. Others above 90 are Mark Flowers (96) and Charles Stewart (91) of Bethune-Cookman, James Zeek (95) of Morris Brown, Douglas Woodruff (93) of North Carolina A&T, Joe Jones (93) of Florida A&M, Leonard Sirianni (92) of South Carolina State, and Raul Rodriguez (90) of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Delaware State leads the conference in BH (62) and Passing (57).

Overall the conference is very strong, and still balanced, although Delaware State still remains the team to beat. Sending 5 or 6 teams to the National Tournament is not out of the question and it should be a very competitive season.

COACH BACKGROUNDS/HISTORY (In order of when each joined the conference).

garmansouth - One of the most experienced coaches in Hoops Dynasty with over 15,000 wins garmansouth moves from Arizona State in the Pac 10 to the MEAC in Season 156 stating he is "ready for a change" after a 9-18 season there. He is ranked #11 in the Tarkanian world with 2729 wins to go against 1797 losses, and has been in the world since season 2. He has six national championships. He will take over a successful North Carolina A&T Aggies team which finished last season at 17-10 and has a new 3-Star recruit waiting for action. The team has six straight winning seasons.
Upsetcity was named coach of the Hampton Pirates at the start of season 157. He came to the team after a successful division 2 run, capped by a National Coach of the Year award at Virginia Union in his last season there. Hampton is his first venture into Division 1 in Tarkanian. He comes with a lifetime record of 226-124.

He spent the last 8 years at Wright State compiling a 132-94 record with two conference championships and a National Tournament appearance. He sports a 333-320 lifetime record in the Tark world.
Uwrjl93 took over a very challenging position in season 158 in accepting the Head Coach position at Coppin State, which has had only one winning season in the last 18 years, and finished last in the west with a 5-22 record. That should change soon, as he is an experienced coach with a Tark record of 1159-680, including a 12 year stint as the coach of the Michigan Wolverines.
AZHawg22 takes the helm of a Bethune-Cookman program that had a successful 17-12 year least year. However before he begins in season 158, the team graduates 7 seniors, so it will be a rebuild. He’ll be able to put his mark on the program early, and has a very strong lifetime Tark record of 783-268 record, where he lead his alma mater Wofford to 14 straight conference championships.
Duece112 leaves a long run at Division 2 to join South Carolina State at the start of season 158. His resume includes two National Coach of the Year honors, and he sports an all-time record of 442-274.
Greiss13 takes over a good looking Florida A&M team in season 159 after six seasons at BYU and a previous stint at Rutgers and Eastern Kentucky. He has an all-time record of 438-296.
JimmyChino takes over as the coach of Morgan State in season 163. He comes out of an 89 year retirement, with his last school in the world being Long Island in season 34. He brings a very impressive resume to Morgan State, with a lifetime record in Tarkanian of 405-132, and an HD record of 1827-783 with two National Championships
Rollo75 takes over the historic Morris Brown program in Season 163, following a seven year stint at Oakland where he compiled a 158-55 record., winning the conference championship each year, and making four NT appearances. His Tark record is 530-271, and two of his players have gone on to play in the NBA. His HD record is 2817 - 1495.
wfudd77 comes to Norfolk State in season 163 directly from a National Championship season at Division 3 Randolph Macon, where he won two National Championships in 15 seasons. He also finished runner up and made a final four and five elite 8 seasons. His Tark record is 460-92, and his HD record is 2763-1115 with six championships in 127 seasons. He hopes to turn around a Norfolk State program with just one winning season in its last 13.

RETIRED COACHES
Mahnk began coaching Morris Brown in season 123, and coached there for 38 years. He finished with a record of 1027-534 and 19 Conference Championships. He left the Wolverines to coach in his home state with the University of Nebraska. VegasKevin took over the helm for season 161
tompkinsaj (Retired) - tompkinsaj comes to the Florida A&M Rattlers in season 156 after a very successful run of 8 seasons at Binghamton, with the last 6 being 20 win seasons, and after compiling a 55-5 record over the last two seasons. Team Outlook:
The Hornets were denied their 9th straight conference title, as Hampton had a 15-1 record overall, sealing Delaware State's fate with a victory at Memorial Hall near the end of the season. The team hopes to continue to build on the seven straight Conference Tournament titles, and start a new streak of conference championships. This looks to be the most potent team in school history. An amazing 75% of the team consists Five-Star and Four-Star recruits. The only potential weakness, once again this year is the lack of an elite perimeter scorer, although there are eight players who are decent to good outside shooters. And Robert McEnnis could be that type of player by the end of the year. This team will be on the list of National Championship contenders.

New Additions:
Michael McNeer from Suffolk, Virginia is a 4-Star PF, ranked at #10 at his position. He has some growing to do from his 68 green rebounding, but the team is deep enough to allow for that. He will actually play more at SF until his rebounding improves. He will be around 90 Ath, at least mid 90s in Rebounding, near 100 Defense, near 80 LP, and at least mid 80s in PE, as well as very good BH and Passing skills.

John Parrish is a great looking player, but his 14 WE indicates a serious problem in motivation. However, the four star SG from Staten Island NY, who is ranked at #12 at his position already has amazing defense 91, great Athleticism 84, and good speed at 80. There are a number of areas that have a lot of potential for improvement, and the team will probably need to start him to hopefully give him the motivation he needs to improve his work ethic.

Projected Impact Players:
Edward Ducan had a solid freshman year, averaging 8.8 PPG, and stepped it up to 14.5 PPG as a sophomore.

Nathan Rice was second in scoring on the team last year at 10.3 pig and shot 55%. Not only is he a scoring threat, but he has 100 Defense. He is expected to anchor the team in his senior year and continue to provide solid offense as well.

David Swift was the #2 Power Forward in the country when recruited, and did not disappoint, being named Freshman of the Year, and Honorable Mention All-Conference in the MEAC. He averaged 7.6 PPG and 3.7 Rebounds in under 16 minutes per game. He went from 41 to 59 speed over the course of the season, and is projected to get to the 80s. He will be an amazing player for the Hornets, and hopefully for the following two years, although he is a major risk to turn pro early.

Robert McEnnis scored 7.4 PPG in 18.8 Minutes per game as a Freshman and went from 41 to 66 in PE over the course of the season. He could become an elite perimeter shooter, which the Hornets desperately need.

Season Goals:
The goals for this season are a Conference Championship, a 8th straight Conference Tournament crown, a trip to the NT with at least an Elite 8 appearance. A National Championship is not out of the question.

Season Prediction
Non-Conference 9-1
Conference 15-1 • CT 3-0
27-2 going into the NT • 30-3 Overall with an Elite 8 appearance in the NT.

Season Recap:
Pre-Season: The Hornets began the season, ranked #3, with two solid wins against ranked teams, Iowa State 111-83 and Duke 97-86.

Non-Conference: Non-Conference play began with the annual "Battle of Delaware" matchup, and the traditional drubbing of Delaware by DSU 92-65. The Hornets were able to cruise through non-conference play with a 10-0 record, despite some very difficult opponents including Maryland, who began the year at #1. Florida, Kentucky, and Wake Forest also fell victim to the team, as they showed much improvement and more consistency over the previous season. The smallest margin of victory was 12 points. The team finished non-conference play ranked #1 in the country.

Conference: The Hornets dominated the conference play, except for a 2 point loss at South Carolina State, and an overtime home win against North Carolina A&T. The team went on to win the Conference Tournament for the 8th consecutive year, finishing the regular season at 28-1, ranked #2

National Tournament: The first game was a serious scare against #16 seed Yale. The game went down to the final three minutes, before Delaware State was able to put it away by a score of 77-69. Several depth chart adjustments ensued after the game, for the substitutions. David Swift was player of the game with 13 points. He had been coming on strong late in the season, and though the CT. The second game was a tough Alabama team. In the second Round, Alabama who was 22-6 going into the game, gave a solid performance, but Delaware State played much better than in the opening round, and came away with a 78-71 victory. Donald Timinsky was player off the game with 12 rebounds in addition to his 9 points. Despite losing in FG% .440 to .423, Delaware State shot 9/20 from the 3 point line. Frank Travis was the leading scorer with 14. In the third round, Delaware State faced #9 Virginia, a perennial powerhouse. Delaware State was able to build on a 4 point halftime lead and finish with a 88-71 victory, behind 18 points from David Swift. In the Elite 8, Delaware State faced off against #4 UCLA, which had a team rating of 822. After trailing by 7 at halftime, they were able to get back in the game, but fell short by a score of 80-78. It was still a great finish for the Delaware State Hornets at 31-2, and was their third 30 win season out of the past 5.

Final Record:
31-2 - Elite 8 Appearance #4 Ranking

DELAWARE STATE HAS GONE 161-10 IN CONFERENCE PLAY IN THE LAST 9 YEARS.

RECRUITING:
This was a challenging recruiting session with only two openings. There was one clear target from the beginning, Zachary Stone, Mr. Basketball from Delaware. As the #4 ranked SG in the country and 12th ranked overall, he drew a lot of attention, especially from A+ prestige Maryland. Providence, Georgetown, Seton Hall and Penn State also offered scholarships, but in the end Stone decided to stay in Delaware with the hopes of helping the Hornets win another title. He will be at least 95 Ath, 93 Spd, 60 Reb, 88 Def, 83 PE, 96 BH and 82 Passing, as well as 98 Stamina. He is the best player ever to suit up for the Hornets.

The Hornets also had to battle Seton Hall for their second player, Dennis Ross, a 6'7" PF from Geigertown, PA. Though only a 2 star player ranked #33 at his position, he has an incredible 96 WE, so he will improve extremely quickly and will be a decent player, though not great.

PG – William Ricci – 6’0 – Torino, Italy – Ricci will provide some good depth at the PG position. He already has 51 ATH and 58 DEF with green potential in both areas. He also has 14 REB (black potential), which will make him one of my best rebounding guards.

Team Outlook
UMES will be looking to rebound from a disappointing season. The good thing is that everyone (except one player) is coming back. That experience should be a huge benefit for us. The key to success will be how well UMES can improve their shooting on offense. The MEAC will be a fully loaded conference this season with some new coaches. The non-conference schedule will include playing four teams that won 20 games.

This season was definitely a disappointment. We went 5-5 with our non-conference schedule, which was what we were targeting. However, we struggled once we got to conference play. This included having a 14-game losing streak. We lost 6 games by single digits. We also finished at the bottom in FG% (41.4), 3PT% (32.6), FT% (65.8), and AST (10.1). We did manage to pull off an upset to win one game in the conference tournament.

Recruits
G – John Brashear - 5'9" - Dover, DE – Brashear was the lone recruit of the previous staff and was caught off guard by the coaching change. Coach wfudd77 has informed John that it is in his best interest to pursue other opportunities via transfer. While John is not included in the future plans at Norfolk State, he will have ample opportunity to showcase his talents this season as the Spartans lack bench depth.

Team Outlook
Norfolk State took a chance and offered Coach wfudd77 of Randolph-Macon after coach stoph departed in the off-season. Coach wfudd77 and his staff will make the short hour and a half drive down Interstate 64 looking to turn around the Norfolk State program. Many in the media are questioning whether coach wfudd77 can make the jump from D3 to D1. While it certainly may be a learning curve, coach wfudd77 brings a winning tradition to a program in need of a boost. During coach wfudd77's 17 seasons at Randolph-Macon the Yellow Jackets went 460-92 (.833 Winning %), won 14 conference tournament championships, and compiled a 41-13 record in the National Tournament including two national championships. While fans of the program are not expecting that type of success immediately, coach wfudd77 was optimistic. "There's no reason we can't be competitive in the MEAC. I came here to do two things; win and drink beer. And I'm all out of beer."
With a roster expected to comprise of five seniors and three walk-ons, coach wfudd77 will need to hit the recruiting trail hard next season and look for immediate help via transfers or the JUCO route. His main priority will be to improve the teams athleticism and speed.

Season Recap
Norfolk State and the previous staff mutually agreed to part ways after finishing the season 11-17. It was the Spartans sixth consecutive losing season while compiling a record of 110-137 over the last nine.

Ineligible:
G – Stephen Pyron (Fr.) – 6’0” – Fort Mill, SC

New Additions:
G – Stephen Pyron (Fr.) – 6’0” – Fort Mill, SC
Coach UC fought for Stephen Pyron for much of the season and was finally able to sign the South Carolina guard in the second cycle. Pyron will sit out his first year on campus due his academic standing, but he expects to jump in his second year and make a serious impact. Strong physical tools (84ATH, 68SPD, 70STAM) paired with his offensive (66PER, 58BH, 45PASS, C FT) and defensive (72DEF) skills have led for some high expectations out of this young man.

F – Maurice Jarrard (Fr.) – 6’1” – Frankenmuth, MI
Maurice Jarrard, the three star guard out of Michigan, went through most of the first recruiting cycle without any D1 teams making a serious push to bring him in. When Coach UC found out about the young man's recruiting status, he wasted no time in going all in for this dynamic scorer. Despite Jarrard playing PG/SG throughout high school, Coach UC has stated he sees Jarrard's career ending at the SF position as he believes Jarrard will be physically imposing (71ATH, 80STAM) but not quite fast enough to cover opposing guards (47SPD). Ranked as the #16 SG out of high school, Jarrard's abilities on offense (78PER, 15LP, C FT) earned him that ranking more than his defense (64DEF). Pairing those abilities with his rebounding (29REB) and guard skills (59BH, 64PASS), Coach UC might be right about what the future hold for Jarrard.

PF/C – Robert Stephens (Fr.) – 6’9” – Washington, D.C.
Another recruit Coach UC found later in the first cycle, Robert Stephens was a player that left many unimpressed when reviewing his tape. However, Coach UC says one word came to mind when watching film of the 6'9" big. Potential. Stephens brings more than the title of "D.C. Mr. Basketball", he brings solid physical ability (47ATH, 21SPD, 73STAM) and big man (55REB, 53DEF, 57SB) skills with much room for improvement. With so many scorers wearing the blue and white in the upcoming years, his lack of offense (64LP, C+ FT), won't hold the team back much. Coach UC did not that many seem to ignore Stephens' ability to manage the ball (31BH, 35PASS) from down low.

Projected Impact Players:
SG – Javier Pena (Sr.) – 6’1” – Santa Isabel, PR

After two seasons of hyping Javier Pena as the next big scorer for the Pirates, he delivered in monstrous fashion (averaging 15 points shooting 47/44/68, 2 assists, 2 boards). Along with graduation came a massive hit to Hampton's ability to score inside - Wunsch w/ 15ppg, Wang w/ 8ppg - and little talent to fill the holes left behind. With teams game planning to stop the perimeter play, Javier will need to step up and overcome the focus of opposing defenses if the Pirates wants to keep up their recent successes.

SF – Randy Bishop (Rs Sr.) – 6’7” – Fayetteville, NC
Similar to Pena, Randy Bishop stepped up last season and showed he can get buckets in a variety of ways (averaging 13 point shooting 52/44/65, 3 boards, 1 assist). Bishop was able to do this all at an elite efficiency (most surprisingly was his perimeter efficiency - Bishop didn't attempt a 3 until the 16th game of the season but averaged 3.7 3PA per game the remainder of the season). However, with Wunsch no longer there to draw double teams, Bishop will need to find a way to maneuver his way to the cup and keep up his perimeter efficiency in more 1v1 situations.

Coach UC on Impact Players: "These two are incredible players on both sides of the ball but, my goodness, their offensive games are jaw dropping. Pena prefers to shoot from deep (100PER) but can take it to the hole as well (79LP). Meanwhile, Bishop loves the contact on the way to the basket (86LP) but has gained so much confidence in his shooting form (79PER). They came to Hampton as almost opposites when scoring but have learned from one another."

Team Review:
Last season was considered a success - the Hampton Pirates returned to the round of 32 for the second time in three seasons. Hampton also brought home the first Conference Championship in 11 seasons. Randy Wunsch leaves Hampton holding the records of #1 in total points, #10 in total rebounds, #18 in total blocks, #21 in total minutes, and #25 in FG% (2x CPOY, 2x 1st-team all conference, 1x 3rd-team all conference, 2x Honorable Mention for All-American). Wayne Wilson leaves Hampton holding the records of #6 in total assists and #8 in total minutes (value was not appropriately valued by awards). Sam Bundy leaves as good role player off the bench (best season: junior year - helped carry bad team to PI shooting 40% from 3 scoring 10ppg). Xi-Wang Wang leaves as a good player off the bench (best season: senior year - started late in season and postseason, strong scorer).

Last Season's Goals: (Achieved or Failed)
  • 20-6 regular season record
  • 2nd rd. NT
  • CT Finals Appearance

Team Outlook:
The elite scoring wings are known qualities and they leave Hampton with a high floor. However, the ceiling of this team will be determined by the remainder of the team. The team does not have a true PG on the roster, Blalock is the only proven low-post scorer, and they are littered with youth across the depth chart. At worst, the team flounders due to these concerns and the Pirates hope for a PI appearance. At best, this team is capable of repeating their 2nd round appearance and possibly making a further run into the NT.

Season Goals:
  • Non-conference: 9-1
  • Conference: 14-2
  • Postseason: CT Finals, 2nd Rd. NT

Season Retrospective:
Wow this season was fun! This season surpassed even my greatest expectations for Howard. We were tied for first in the MEAC West division, made it to the conference finals where we had a competitive game against Delaware State, and was invited to play in the NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid. We also ended the year with a winning record against Top 25 teams at 3-2, holding our own against some of the best coaches in Tarkanian. The in-season victory over Delaware State also means that Howard has now had a victory against every team in the MEAC since I have joined the conference. This team went well beyond what I thought they were capable of. I’m not sure if this is the best team I’ve ever created in HD (I’d love to see how this team would match up against Wright State’s Season 155 team), but considering the competition in this league I think this season displayed an evolution in my decision making. I am incredibly proud of this team and look forward to possibly surpassing this high watermark for seasons to come.

Conference Awarded Players
PG – Mark Prokop (Sr.) – 5’9” – Washington, DC
Second Team MEAC
Receiving Second Team MEAC honors is accurate to what I was hoping this player would accomplish, and I’m honestly a bit surprised that Prokop was not given higher honors than Second Team MEAC. Had he been registered as a SF instead of as a PG he likely would have received more recognition. This does not change what Prokop accomplished this year. He was our bedrock for Howard, turning into a scoring monster and completely rewriting the record books. Not only did he lead the MEAC in points this season, he also cemented himself as Howard’s most-scoring player ever with 1585 points. He also graduates 1st in minutes with 3362 minutes, 1st in attempted FG with 1222 shots, 6th in attempted 3Pt Attempts with 618 shots, 6th all-time in steals with 140 steals, and 16th in assists with 362 assists. Unfortunately, while he started the year on the NBA Draft Board, he fell off as he was playing SF instead of PG for the entire year. He did not get the accolades that I expected him to receive, but he certainly did a LOT in his time here at Howard. He goes down in history as one of the absolute best players to play at Howard, and is certainly the best PG that I have ever coached.

SG – Vlade “Blade” Zymowski (Sr.) – 6’0” – Novobrisk, Russia
Second Team MEAC
“Blade” had his best season as a senior. Receiving Second Team MEAC is certainly an accomplishment for him. He, Prokop, Schwing, Profitt, and Angelo created the best backcourt that I have ever coached in Hoops Dynasty. Schwing and Zymowski topped the 3pt% stat in the MEAC, and Schwing was tied for 6th in DI in 3pt% with a 49.4% shooting accuracy. Zymowski was also 9th in the MEAC in points per game. In the Howard record books he finishes his career 11th in points with 1340 points, 2nd in both 3pt attempts and 3pt shots made, and 12th in FG attempts and FG attempts made. He really came into his own as a secondary scoring option when Prokop transformed from being the main distributor on the team to becoming the main scorer. This shift in our backcourt is also what I believed elevated this team to the NCAA tournament. “Blade” did excellent work for this team, and he and Prokop will certainly be missed for years to come.

C – John Burdett (Jr.) – 6’11” – Gilbert, AZ
Second Team MEAC
While I expected Burdett to have a solid year this year I did not expect him to reach Second Team MEAC. He finishes the year with 8.7 PPG and 6.8 RPG, which are solid numbers. What I think set him over the other centers was that he was his efficiency on offense. He led the MEAC this season in FG% with a 55.9% shooting percentage. His role on the team was tertiary compared to the role that our guards played, but this shows that he is ready to help carry the team next season. I have several roster charts to experiment with next season, many involving Burdett playing different positions on the depth chart. Hopefully, he will be able to maintain (or even improve) his standing for next season.

Freshman Forecast:
C – Ronald Oster – 7’0” – Newport News, VA
Oster didn’t need to grow all that much in order to convince me that he will be able to carry Howard in the future, so it’s wonderful to report that his growth has been the most exciting to watch over the last season. A lot of his focus this year has been on his Athleticism and Defense, as he already elite in Rebounding, Shot Blocking, and Low Post play. His Athleticism is expected to peak at around 80, and what I am genuinely excited about is that his Defense hasn’t turned blue yet. Oster’s defense could become elite, which I was not anticipating when I recruited him. Even with Burdett receiving Second Team MEAC honors at C I think the best version of Howard for next season has Oster starting at C. Next season’s team will be wildly different from last season’s team largely because Burdett, Oster, and Youngblood are forming an exciting frontcourt for the future.

PG/SG – Howard Angelo – 6’0” – Manassas, VA
Angelo also did not need to grow all that much in his primary stats, but I was hoping that his defense could improve before putting him in the starting line-up. His defense did turn blue at around 40, capping that stat in the mid-60s, which isn’t ideal. His athleticism went from green to black after 11 points, which is also not ideal. He still projects to be a solid guard that can bounce between either PG or SG, depending on the needs of the team. He will be ready to take over for Proffitt at the PG position come season 164, and can possibly start at the SG position next season. I honestly have no idea what the best line-up is going to be for next season, so having a flexible guard like Angelo is rather refreshing. I just hope his defense keeps on improving.

PF – David Youngblood – 6’7” – Wyandanch, NY
Youngblood really flourished in the starting line-up this season, growing the most out of any player on the team. The end results of this season are rather interesting in that his ceiling has shrunk, but his actual position on the team is a bit more flexible than what I first thought it would be. The great news is that he projects to be an elite defender. His defense grew 19 points this season and is still green, which means that the stat should continue to soar through the 90s and possibly reach 100. The not-so-great news is that his athleticism, shot blocking, and passing all were prematurely capped this season. He should still reach 80 for athleticism and shot-blocking (which are still fine numbers in those stats, but much lower than anticipated) and passing could still reach 55 (which is good for a forward) but those weren’t the numbers I was expecting when I recruited him. Where I do see a lot of potential for him is having him start at SF. He will certainly have the defensive numbers to play the position, and his athleticism should let him bounce between the two forward positions. Youngblood a defensive juggernaut in the making, the main question is whether to move him over to SF or to keep him at PF. Time (and recruiting) will tell.

SF/PF – Eric McMain – 6’6” – Calgary, Canada
McMain gets the double-dip in the Freshman Forecast for being redshirted last year, but admittedly not much has changed with his development. His stat spread continues to be intriguing. His perimeter and low post are both still green with some nice development in both stats while his rebounding, defense, and free throw shooting all turned blue, projecting him at around the 70s for both numerical stats while projecting his free throw shooting at a C+. With his low work ethic McMain is unlikely to max out his stats (even with the redshirt season), but considering that McMain was recruited after missing out on a number of other options, he should still provide some solid years as a back-up forward option. He projects to be a DI generalist. He might start in the future for Howard, but that will be towards the end of his career on the team.

SF/PF – Brian Stevenson – 6’6” – Buffalo, NY
Stevenson was redshirted this season to see if he would be able to develop the athleticism necessary to become the next Billy Guy. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case. His athleticism (and his defense) were both capped very early in the season, leaving his projected stats to be well below that of a starting SF. The good news is that even though he was redshirted he grew the second most out of everyone else on the team, which is quite amazing considering the redshirt. The other bit of good news is that his low post grew 12 points and is still in the green, making it likely that he will be an elite scorer in the post. This shifts his ceiling from that of a Billy Guy to that of an Eddie Gillis. The “Stevenson Era” that I was hoping for in last season’s forum post will likely never be a thing, but he still figures to have some role on offense for Howard.

New Additions:

SG – Steven Reedy – 6’1” – Newark, NJ
One major weakness that Howard is going to have next season is with perimeter shooting. Howard is going from having two 100 perimeter shooters (Zymowski and Schwing) to having an 81 perimeter shooter that is projected to be the back-up PG. Reedy likely won’t solve all of Howard’s perimeter issues, but will definitely help set Howard up for the future. He is also junior college transfer, so he will only have two years with Howard. He doesn’t know the Triangle offense so he will have to start next season on the bench. That said, Reedy’s perimeter shooting numbers look great, and his absurd work ethic likely means that he will be ready to start at SG by the middle of next season. The fact that he is a Junior also means that the SG position is now split up in scholarships, meaning that Howard should not have this void in perimeter shooting in the future. I have faith that Reedy will be able to help us out next season, but the opening games will be rather rocky until he is reedy to start.

Get it? “Reedy” to start?

I don’t apologize for art…

SG – Ralph Stripling – 5’11” – Rowland, NC
The unfortunate truth about this year’s class is that Howard invested heavily into two recruits and did not get either recruit. By the time the second recruit rejected Howard the recruiting class had relatively few options left. Stripling was the best guard prospect available in my pool. He can certainly develop a great perimeter game, as both his perimeter and ball-handling stats are green. His ceiling will be tied to his defense. Currently it is sitting at an atrocious 14 right now, but it is green. A lot of his early development will be focused on building his defensive game. If his stats really grow and stay green this year, he does have the potential to start alongside Angelo in the future. My personal guess is that he will be more like Schwing and be a sharpshooter off the bench.

SF – Norman Hagedorn – 6’5” – Chesapeake, VA
Another season, another missed recruit, and another project to invest some time into. Hagedorn is…not an ideal DI player. His athleticism, speed, and free throw shooting are all green as of now, and his defense is set to be capped somewhere in the mid-70s. His perimeter will also be capped in the mid-60s. If his athleticism and speed really develop this could be an interesting diamond in the rough for Howard. That said, so many players have had their athleticism turn blue early that I am not holding out too much hope. I give an 80% chance that he gets cut in the future.

Projected Roster for Season 163
Starters:
PG – Joshua Profitt (Sr.) – 5’11” – Winnipeg, Canada
SG – Stacy Hatfield (Sr.) – 6’4” – Henderson, NC
SF – David Youngblood (So.) – 6’7” – Wyandanch, NY
PF – John Burdett (Sr.) – 6’11” – Gilbert, AZ
C – Ronald Oster (So.) – 7’0” – Newport News, VA

Reserves:
PG/SG – Howard Angelo (So.) – 6’0” – Manassas, VA
SG – Steven Reedy (Jr.) - 6’1” – Newark, NJ
SG – Ralph Stripling (Fr.) – 5’11” – Rowland, NC
SF/PF – Eric McMain (So. RS) – 6’6” - Calgary, Canada
SF/PF - Brian Stevenson (Fr. RS) – 6’6” – Buffalo, NY
PF/C – Foster Logan (Sr.) – Tiverton, RI

Projects:
SF – Norman Hagedorn (Fr.) – Chesapeake, VA

Season Prediction:
I would be surprised if we surpassed last year’s team. We went beyond the projected ceiling that I gave Howard, winning five more games than expected and getting into the NCAA tournament when I would have simply been happy with a winning record. For next season’s team I honestly have no idea. Howard is in a state of flux, and will be for the next couple of seasons. We are not only saying goodbye to the most successful class at Howard in 10 seasons, we are shifting our identity from a backcourt team with great defenses to a frontcourt team with only decent defenses. This is going to be a rebuilding year more than a reloading year, but season 164 should have Howard back to being a stable and competitive club.

C - Chester Bellantoni - Big Chester is a great defender and a great rebounder. Would like to see a few more points out of him, but he is a very important part of this team.

SF - Theodore Powell - This true freshman out of Eau Claire, WI will need to be a solid contributor on both ends of the court to keep this from being a dismal season.

Season Outlook:
Unfortunately it looks like this will be a rebuilding year at Coppin St, but coach hopes they can scratch and claw to a .500 season.

Season Goals:
Beat Bethune Cookman and SC State.

Season Prediction
Non-Conference 7-3
Conference 4-12, with special emphasis on beating Bethune-Cookman and SC State as they are the two schools that rejected uwrjl when he applied there years ago.

This will be a rebuilding year so coach UWRJL will need to take comfort in small victories. Hooking up with the AD's wife from SC or BC would be icing on the cake!

Team Outlook:
After making the NT for the first time in coach duece's tenure, the Bulldogs bring back a team of 8 upper classmen that should again be competitive on the season and perhaps push for a NT bid. SCSU lost only two players this summer, but they were mighty big losses. The school's all-time leading assist man, Virgil Steward, and fellow initial recruiting classmate Dale Morton's loss leave a big hole as primary ball-handlers. Especially in a conference where many of our top teams run the press. The Bulldogs' bigs are all upper classmen and will provide the rotational foundation for the team. Our overall team maturity should keep us from being a total bust, but the pessimist would say this team will have a higher RPI this year than last for the first time since coach arrived on campus. The optimist would say the NT is still in the cards.

PG: Scott Hughes, 6'2" So. (#94 PG)
PG: Gary Cammack, 5'10" Fr. (#186 PG)
PG: Daniel Casale, 5'11" Fr. (#31 PG)

Redshirting:
C: Michael Gallup, 6'8" Jr. (#133 C)

New Additions:
Though small, the incoming class is a relatively poor one with low upside, however SCSU could end up with a couple of decent role players, who are probably best suited as bench players throughout their career. Daniel Casale comes in with high pedigree (#31 PG) but low upsdie. He is an ok perimeter shooter, ball handler, and distributor for a guard, but those skills will only moderately improve while as SCSU. However, his Ath/Spd and Defense combination will make him a solid contributor, that may outplay his counting stats throughout his time at the school. Noticing the hole at guard, the Bulldogs also brought in sophomore transfer Scott Hughes, who will fill a role as a 3rd guard during his 3 years at SCSU. Coming in off a redshirt season is Gary Cammack. Like his recruiting class-mate Leonard Sirianni (see projected impact players), Cammack will be a defensive liability, but has the potential to be the best offensive PG of the newcomers. His BH/Passing are set to improve quite a bit, and his perimeter shooting could be useful off the bench. The only question is his defensive fit, and it's a big one.

Projected Impact Players:
SG: Leonard Sirianni as a sophomore is the most likely candidate to lead the team in scoring. He is already a solid perimeter shooter, and is also improving in the low post. His solid BH/P combination should help in the even of double-teams. Sirianni's defensive woes make him best suited as a super-sub on a good team. But with a lack of depth and skill at the guard positions ole Leo is expected to start and play quite a bit, while leading the team in scoring.
SF: Willie Nickols is the best athlete on the team, a solid defender, a good rebounder for his size/spd combination, a good ball handler and is still growing to be a good to great scorer from the perimeter and at the rim. Nickols has few holes and will act as a swiss-army knife for the Bulldogs on the wing.
PG: Leon Burns, though not a star, and probably not even a 10ppg scorer, Burns will be an impact player as the only upper-classmen running at either guard position on the team. Burns is expected to get plenty of burn this year to bring some stability to the guard positions.
C: Brad Bohman, Bohman came in to SCSU with a low work ethic (16), and as such has squandered his high or very high potential in literally all categories except PE. However, for the first time, he gained rather than lost during the offeason and is a solid defender and scorer at his position with room to continue growing through his graduation.

Season Goals:
Stretch Goal:
Make the NT for a second reason in a row
Must-Have Goal: A good to great recruiting class. The last two classes have been poor to average at best. In order to continue winning in a constantly improving conference, we must bring in a recruiting class to feel good about. Our first year at B- prestige should help win that.
Other Goals: Maintain team prestige, finish with a winning record in conference, don't lose at home to Coppin State.

Season Predictions:
19-10, Last Four Out for NT, PI 2nd Rd

Season Recap
Quite the season it was at SCSU, a Locked In at-large bid to the NT and a second round OT loss. The best season in my tenure at SCSU was a huge surprise. The highlights of which are beating #1 ranked Delaware State making the NT, and taking a talented Michigan team to OT in round 2. One of our season goals was to have a good to great recruiting class, I think we probably accomplished that, not sure we got the big fish we were looking for but I'm optimistic we can continue to build on a bright future.

UCLA has been absolutely killing it in recruiting and it should pay off for them this year. They're almost 3 points higher than the #2 team, which is practically unheard of.
It's easy to see why recruiting is difficult in the DelMarVa and NY areas, as Virginia, Maryland, Delaware State and Syracuse all round out the top 5. Defending champion Oral Roberts comes in at 19.

Wow. I have 3 of the top 18 players in conference. Definitely interesting

I don't have any top players in the conference, but apparently my recruiting class wasn't horrible!

man, you guys are something else with the roster evaluations. It's pretty amazing being in this conference. Unfortunately I have zero attachment or interest in most of the guys on my roster, and we will be lucky to win more than 5 games. Going to take major major lumps this year and hope to be competitive in year 3 of the rebuild.

It's hard to sell people on the conference saying "it's the most fun!" but it really is a lot of fun.
  • Early on was fun watching my 1-2 guys grow rapidly, then the first full recruiting class, then the first full roster, and seeing all the conference mate's growth as well.
  • Filling out the outlook attaches you to players / teams, you get rankings from other coaches, some outlooks are humorous, others are more 'official' (I tried to sound more official during my most recent one), you follow storylines - like coach uwrjl93's disdain for BCU and SCSU (they declined his application several seasons ago) or how I repeatedly stated my SG Pena was going to become a monster offensive player two seasons too early.
  • The conference chatter about recruiting, big upcoming games, advice from other coaches (I fully admit I wouldn't have made the postseason last season without a small tip from gill in the coaches corner that I didn't even have to ask for), etc. It's all positivity all the time.
6/3/2020 3:12 PM
"It's all positivity all the time."

Not when I run into the AD's from BCU and SCSU.

I do enjoy being in this conference, but I feel like I am "rebuilding" again. I made some pretty nice improvements with my first recruiting class, but they didn't get me to the post season. Now I feel like I have a pretty weak team again and need to build around the recruits I got this past season. It's hard to win in this conference because of all the great coaches, but it is tons of fun.
