So, we've got a starting-quality sophomore PG with room to improve, a polished senior SG star, a backup PG (though technically an SG), a decent senior starter at PF, and a junior starter/potential star at C. Obviously there are a lot of needs.

#18 PG, #85 Overall, ****; JuCo Jr., no promises. Escudero will be backing up Hoffman this year, and may improve enough to step in as the starter at SG next year, though who knows with the new engine how quickly he will improve. Personally, I think that the shift to making guys improve more slowly will be to the detriment of the game. Anyways, under the recent system, Escudero would be a high-quality signing for a team like the Spartans who need warm bodies that will leave in a staggered manner. Hopefully he can hold his own, and improve, in his two years on campus.

#37 PG, #160 Overall, ***; ineligible. On the other extreme, Tony Olivo will be sitting out this year completely, but looks like the sort of guy who will improve into a starting quality PG by the time he has been on campus for his 5 year tour.

#59 PF, #227 Overall, ***; no promises. In a normal year, Tim Wood would be redshirting. Perhaps he still will, but the team needs depth at SF, even presuming that we win a recruiting battle with Wisconsin for a starting level SF, and he could provide depth either there (though with his ballhandling and passing ratings, he would not be a good fit) or at a big man spot and have another guy shift over to SF at times. He's not much to look at right now but should improve fairly well, especially if the redshirt is applied and accepted.

#5 PF, #17 Overall, *****; no promises. Jeffrey Huff might be the guy who would be better suited to shifting over to backup the SF spot as he grows into himself and the team develops a little. He might be pressed into service as the starter, though. Huff is never going to be a great shotblocker, but he should have a variety of ways to score (though not from the foul line), and will be a quality starter during his college years. Depending on team success, he may or may not make the NBA.

#11 C, #38 Overall, *****; JuCo Jr., no promises. Yarmitsky is another guy who will ably perform for two years before moving on...probably to Europe. We'll see how he does under the new system. He'll be a big help to this year's team, regardless; for depth, if nothing else.

#2 SF, #7 Overall, *****; promised the start, guaranteed 10 minutes. William Burke is a fantastic player. Possibly the best player ever signed by a team associated with me. I have gotten a few top SFs before, and they are hard to get, because there are so few of them (Michigan State beat oldresorter's Wisconsin team for Burke), and I think Burke is the best of all of them. He'll be speedy and super athletic, an amazing rebounder for his position, and a great scorer and defender. The only slight area of any complaint is his passing, which isn't all that bad, really. Even his FT shooting is very good. With a guy like this, it isn't a question of whether they go pro early, it's a question of whether you have him for 2 or 3 seasons. Burke's one truly limiting factor is his stamina, which has high potential but which will take him off of the floor more than he should be, at least in the short run.

Welcome to the year of Hoffman.

This opponent is ludicrously bad, of course, and coached by Simmy, so this won't be a real example of how games will go with this team. I expect to see losses, mostly, for a while.

Even though Hoffman was not shooting well from outside, he was able to put together a very good game, with rebounding and passing, as well as reasonable scoring. He limited Santos Guerrero okay.

Overall, MSU was pretty efficient, and managed to keep UNLV from being efficient. UNLV Is a much more talented squad than our first opponent was, so there's a chance that we can compete with our non-conference opponents.

Hey coach, you asked me to give you my thoughts on how everyone looked after the offseason and I think I've seen enough to do that. I only jotted down things that stood out to me...

William burke:

perimeter shooting: big upside
rebounding: big upside
stamina: big upside

Matthew Couey:
ball handling: big upside
low post moves: limited upside

perimeter shooting: big upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: big upside
stamina: big upside

Matthew Etheridge:

William Jameson:
