I fully blame our lack of depth at guard.  Wagner played 38 minutes, and was either "fairly fresh" or "tiring" throughout essentially the entire game.  Hopefully he comes back next year, or the Spartans are in real trouble.

From what I can tell (colorblind, remember) there's a lot of green in there that isn't showing in this post, unfortunately.  Golden wasn't scouted but he's the #2 player in the country, overall.  Kaczor is #3 overall; both are top in their position.  Nobody has high potential in athleticism or speed; Redick's topped out in athleticism, as is Brodie, and neither Brodie nor Kaczor will gain much speed.  Kaczor won't improve much in rebounding, low post, passing, ballhandling, or stamina, either, but he should see some improvement elsewhere, particularly in perimeter and blocking.  Redick's stamina will improve. Voelker has a few areas of improvement.  These guys have ugly names.  Whatever, they're all young, they'll all be fine, some better than others, some will go pro, others probably won't.

Redick exceeded my expectations as a senior, particularly since we needed him on the court constantly and I thought he was only an adequate offensive player (albeit quite agood defensive one).  He shot really well throughout the entire season and had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.  I don't know if he's a pro...I doubt it, but maybe.  Still, definitely a valued member of the team, and I wish we'd been able to get him (and Wagner) more help in the backcourt.

Losing a 4-year starter always hurts.  Kaczor was very consistent as an inside threat and a non-presence on the perimeter.  He was a good defender and an adequate rebounder.  His offensive production and defensive presence will be missed.

Voelker probably would've been a bigger part of a team with a different personnel makeup.  He'd be a perfectly legitimate backup PF as well as a backup SF, but we had four guys in the frontcourt this year.  Kaczor had to do some extra duty as SG, so Voelker may have seen some more time at SF, but he wasn't terribly relied-upon offensively.  He wasn't much of a downgrade from Kaczor on offense...really the only differences were 12 points of speed and 9% in FT shooting.  I'm glad the team has Barry Thomas now...that should help the transition with two quality SFs leaving.

Hmm, doesn't seem to show potential.  Well, they're all good players with nice potential.

[edit, 12/16/10:]

This recruiting class was ranked the 6th best in DI.

Alabama was number 1, and has an average rating, one game in to the regular season, of 821!  Crazy!

Also of note: Silvestri was named a First Team Preseason All American, and Kaczor was named to the Second Team.
Infinity Sports News NBA lure too much for Herbert Wagner, won't return to Michigan St. 03/14 03:27 AM

Wow, that really, really hurts the team.  We now have no guards returning for next season.  That means, four slots to fill.  Four freshman would not be acceptable, because we'd have this same issue after four years.  Also, guards take a while to get their footing, typically.

#1 PG, #11 Overall, *****; no promises.  Freund  will probably be starting for us right away.  His passing rating/potential leaves a bit to be desired in a PG, but that'll probably be his position anyways, though he could easily move to SG or SF.  I expect that he'll leave early, the question is whether it'll be as a sophomore or as a junior.

#9 PG, #38 Overall, *****; no promises...possibly redshirting.  Kincannon is a bit raw as a guard, but he's already a nice athlete and defender, so he wouldn't be a trainwreck as a player to see immediate playing time.  Still, he's supposed to be a great team player, per his evaluations, so there's a chance in spite of his very lofty rankings that he'll be willing to redshirt, and could possibly be a four-year player (due to his adequate but not superb speed).  He should, of course, develop very nicely.  I believe that his potential in Perimeter and Passing are much higher than 20 points from where they are now.

#6 SG, #33 Overall, *****; no promises.  Juhl will probably start at some point this year, though I'm not sure if he's quite ready for the role.  He'd make a nice SF as well as a solid SG...maybe better to begin with as an SF and growing into an SG as he develops more speed and passing ability.  Regardless, he's ready to see the floor immediately in some fashion.

#20 SG, #97 Overall, ***, JuCo Jr; no promises.  Carter is a perfect 2-year backup utility guard.  He'll probably backup the point position because immediately he's the best ballhandler and passer on the team (but doesn't have the potential to get much better).  I highly doubt he'll be drafted, but he should be a very valuable contributor to our team.

#124 SG, unranked overall, no stars, JuCo Jr;  no promises.  Jack Nutter is sort of a space filler, but he could see significant time as a junior (and he'll probably be supplanted by Kincannon as a senior).  Nutter is a prototypical spot-up jump shooter whose comes off the bench for a quick spark.  He's got some upside on defense but that's limited by his mediocre speed and athleticism.  His low ballhandling will mean that he has to have shots created for him, but he should be able to make most of the shots he gets off of passes.  He's very disposable, regardless, and could easily be the 12th man on the team.  Also, with that 2.0 GPA, there's no telling how much study hall he needs.

#2 PF, #2 Overall, *****; no promises.  Allen Sheehan is a good, well rounded player with no real weaknesses besides FT shooting, but also no great strengths.  His rebounding leaves something to be desired, and he'll never be the best at anything, but he should prove to be a quality teammate and he should avoid many of the turnovers that one sees with many big men.  He should also get a fair share of fastbreak points, at least as far as that happens for PFs.  If his rebounding potential was High I would be singing his praises, but it isn't, and he'll be a bit of a liability on that statistic.
