redshirting. Haines was a late signing. I originally targeted one of the two SGs I'm fighting for as a redshirt for the team, but then Cincinnatti, which is 4 miles away from the kid, came in after I'd chased away IUPUFW (I think that's the initials), so I went ahead and promised the start and 20 minutes to that guy and looked, around 4:00 this afternoon, at my list of players I'd already scouted. Haines was undecided. I think he was the only one. I thew a minimum of stuff at him to get him to sign with the redshirt secured.
He'll develop into a solid contributor. Never underestimate the worth of a highly experienced reserve big man, which is what he'll be by the time he's contributing heavily.
Haines was at his best as a reserve, but he held his own as a starter. Still, much better as a garbageman, cleaning up other people's messes and getting easy baskets. He started off as a very mediocre player, low end for DI...with time and a lot of practice, Ervin Haines became a legitimate starter in the Big Ten. Not a star, he never approached those heights, but a starter, and a decent one. I couldn't have asked for more from his career.
