1st annual North Carolina Invitational:

Game 1:
Miami(OH) at UNC
Wichita St at Rutgers

Team capsules:
UNC(0-4) - After 2 National Championships in 7 seasons, optimism is sky high in Chapel Hill as host school. North Carolina returns 6 from their championship season including preseason 2nd team All-American James Kamen (9.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg). Losing 4 games to start the year is a first for coach jleo, who sports the highest coach winning pct. of any DI coach with 5 or more players drafted to the NBA. While the competition doesn't lighten up, UNC returns home after playing 3 of 4 on the road against Big 10, Big East, and Big 12 opponents.

Rutgers(2-2) - Twin seniors Michael Griffie (14.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg) and Brian Silvia (10.3 ppg, 1.8 stl/g) pace a solid Rutgers squad capable of making a run deep into the NT this season. Coach Liamsar is looking to recapture the magic that put the Scarlet Knights in the NT for 16 of 17 seasons and produced one National Title.

Miami(OH)(4-0) - Elibolender 4th season at the helm of the Redhawks looks to continue the momentum of back-to-back NT appearances. Oxford brings back MAC 1st teamer John Williams (9.5 ppg, 3.5 apg) along with MAC 3rd teamer and leading scorer Jeremy Ladouceur (11.3, 4.0 rpg). Expect another 20 win season for Miami.

Wichita St. (2-2) - A model of consistency in the Valley, bugwright brings a senior laden group to the NCI this year. Preseason All-America honorable mention Christopher Dugan runs the show (4.0 apg) and distributes to double figure scorers James Fontes (11.8 ppg) and Troy Kellogg (10.8). Now in his 16th season in charge, bugwright has led the Shockers to either a conference championship or postseason appearance in 12 of 15 seasons.

Rutgers (4-2)

line: even

Win or lose, Rutgers seems poised to grab at least 7 wins heading into Big East conference play. 5 scored in double figures in the Scarlet Knights 31 point blowout of Wichita St. Brian Silvia has shot 14-22 FG 18.5 ppg in the first 2 games of the tournament. UNC posted their first 2 wins of the non-conference season, with a convincing win over Miami and a big win over Wichita St. The Tar Heels have outscored their last 2 opponents by 48 pts. After starting the year shooting 6-26 FG, Carl Morris poured in 17 points against Wichita St. and has 6 steals over the last 2 contests.

1st Annual North Carolina Invitational Championship

UNC 70

Rutgers 49

The Tar Heels claimed the North Carolina Invitational Championship with a 70-49 defeat of Rutgers. James Kamen paced all scorers with 16 points on 7-13 shooting from the field. North Carolina outrebounded Rutgers 46-28, including 27 rebounds from the bench (Clark 9, Harris 9). With the game tied at 12 after a John Kerley free throw with 13:14 to go in the 1st, North Carolina went on a 31-13 run to close the half. 3-pointers by Andrew Shields, Carl Morris, and Steve Bown helped build the lead to 43-25 halftime score. The lead would extend to as high as 31 midway through the 2nd half before the UNC starters were removed. Brian Silvia led Rutgers with 12 points while 2nd leading scorer Michael Griffie was held scoreless from the field. Rutgers finishes 2-1 in the NCI. UNC will look to defend the NCI crown against Army, Idaho, and Kansas next season.

Congratulations to Rutgers, Wichita St., and Miami(OH) (sorry about the Frozen 4 loss) on making history and participating in the 1st North Carolina Invitational.

Next year's participants include Kansas, Army, and Idaho.

If you would like your team to play in the 3rd annual North Carolina Invitational, teams are still being considered up until this year's postseason. This one is shaping up to be a very high level of competition based off of the interested schools.

If you have already let me know via sitemail, thank you, and I'll be sending out the schedule during this year's postseason so you can schedule the games immediately the following season.
