MSNBCMichigan St. announces hiring of colorblind79 as new head coach of men's basketball. SMU officials unavailable for comment.02/29 03:24 AM
I have just come aboard at Michigan State as the new coach. The last one abandoned the team after leaving it a mess. I've got 8 scholarships to fill and a 3-24 record from which to recover. The program's prestige had sunk down to a B-, but it looks like it got back up to a B when I took over. I've had some success turning around programs before. I've documented my teambuilding efforts in the four worlds in which I play. As of this moment, the SMU Mustangs thread that had been active for about 8 months, is concluded except for some epilogue activity.
I took the SMU program from obscurity to three NT appearances in a row, including a Final Four. It took time and some creativity, and I encourage anybody who happens to be interested in my methods for turning around a program without any natural advantages to check it out.
Right now, though, marks not only the end of one era but the beginning of another one. I am the new Tom Izzo.

Coach:
Thanks again for accepting our offer. I really think you've made the right choice. I'm not going to lie to you and tell you it's going to be easy, but I think you have what it takes to put this program on the right path.

The expectations won't be that high your first couple of seasons, but once you've had a chance to get your own players in here, there's no reason that Michigan State University can't be a perennial power in the National Tournament.

Anyway, I'm glad your here - let's get started!

Welcome Aboard,
Corey Napier

Coach,
Corey Napier asked that I drop you a line to introduce myself, so that's what I'm doing.

I've been here for a couple of years now - brought in by the previous coach - he was a great guy, players loved him but there's a lot of pressure to win here, guess he just wasn't cut out for it.

Anyway I'm sure in the interview they told you that we finished last season running a motion offense and man to man defense but obviously we stunk as coaches or we don't have the right types of kids for those styles. I'm going with option #2. Let me know after you've had a chance to review the roster and tapes what kind of offense you think works best for us and I'll start preparing.

With recruiting starting up again, we probably need to get our act together so we know who to go after.

Looking forward to working with you,
John Wilson
Assistant Coach

-------

The five walk-ons will be gone shortly, as will Marshall, Cuomo, and Holmes. David Allen is mildly problematic, as he was an academically ineligible signee. My predecessor apparently thought it would be cute to put all of his practice minutes into study hall. Not only in his freshman season, mind you, which any informed coach would do, but for the last two seasons as well. I will have to be certain that he is off of the depth chart completely so he does not want to return for a fifth year.

Both of the point guards I'm inheriting are nice players, and Mireles would be impressive if it weren't for his work ethic. In theory, I could field 3/5ths of a respectable starting lineup with the players over from last year's debacle. I will, however, likely be handing out promises like free samples of chicken at a mall food court, in order to fill up my team. I'm sure Hilliard and Lumpkin and Mireles will get their minutes, but it might be as backups.

I'm going to look to sign some transfers and JuCo players, in order to round out the classes. I'll also look for an ineligible or two, and I'll certainly want to redshirt somebody. Along with that, I may have to leave open a scholarship on purpose. That's if I'm lucky...I could certainly fail to fill the team.

I will be looking for three and four star recruits, most likely. The important thing right now is to get a base and create some continuity to set up the school for future generations of players. This method has also worked for me at Iowa, in Crum, where it even took me as far as the Championship Game on my first batch of guys.

I'm also going to be installing the Press and abandoning the Man-to-Man. I have yet to decide whether I'll switch offenses to the Triangle, which is the system I've used on all of my teams for some time. I may or may not eventually install the Zone as a halfcourt defense (something that has worked very well for me at the lower levels and at Iowa, but which may be unnecessary at MSU).

How did this team go 3-24 with Holmes being THAT much of a monster down low?

Anyway, good luck! I'll be watching, just as I have with your other threads in Smith.

Neither of them is great, by any means, but they'll help me round out my classes. Bicknell will have a greater impact unless Triplett knows the Motion offense and Bicknell doesn't.

#54 C, #244 Overall, ***, JuCo Junior; promised 15 minutes. Bicknell is huge, which is kinda fun to bring onto my team. He's only going to be with us for two seasons, and I signed him for a cheap reserve who'd help me round out my classes. I think he'll do pretty well in his time here, though I suppose that depends partially on if he knows the motion. I don't know at all whether he or Triplett does, because I didn't scout them.

#120 C, unranked overall, **; redshirting. Haines was a late signing. I originally targeted one of the two SGs I'm fighting for as a redshirt for the team, but then Cincinnatti, which is 4 miles away from the kid, came in after I'd chased away IUPUFW (I think that's the initials), so I went ahead and promised the start and 20 minutes to that guy and looked, around 4:00 this afternoon, at my list of players I'd already scouted. Haines was undecided. I think he was the only one. I thew a minimum of stuff at him to get him to sign with the redshirt secured.

He'll develop into a solid contributor. Never underestimate the worth of a highly experienced reserve big man, which is what he'll be by the time he's contributing heavily.

#23 C, #122 Overall, ****; promised the start, promised 20 minutes. Jimmy Brown's a local guy, which is why I targeted him. I'm not crazy about his WE, and his FT shooting is meh. He's got some good room to grow, though, in a lot of areas, while also being ready to contribute in a big way immediately. He played the Triangle/Man-Press in high school. He'll be good. I'm not guaranteeing he'll make the NBA or anything, but it's not out of the question.

#11 PF, #30 Overall, *****; promised the start, promised 20 minutes. The last of the big man recruits for the year, Fred Webb is the best player I've ever signed. He's got a ton of room to grow and a great DE rating and he's top notch at the FT line. Granted, he's not the best rebounding big man I've seen, but that'll change. His low post rating will get up to a very high level, too. I was positively shocked to get him without any kind of battle. He will be an NBA player for sure. His team ran the Man-Press on defense but I don't know what he did for offense.

#8 SF, #71 Overall, *****; promised the start, promised 20 minutes. James Freeman has a few weak spots but he's a very good player, all the same. I don't like his FT rating at all and his ballhandling leaves a lot to be desired. Still, he's got great speed and athleticism, and he'll make steady progress throughout his career in everything but FT shooting. I think I'm not going to have him practice shooting from the line - there's just too little to gain from it, and in my experience, there aren't different gradations of F. He'll be coming in either as an F or a D-. Not worth the effort to improve that, and it wouldn't improve much. He could become a very good rebounding small forward. He knows the Triangle, but I don't know what defense his high school team ran. I'm fairly certain he'll make the NBA, but it's hard to predict with SFs.
