i'd say if you make the sweet 16, you can make the move. if you fall short, you need to make the national tournament next season, then you're definitely in.

You'll be able to grab a D1 team after this season, no matter what you do in the NT.  Now it might not be the best d1 school, but you should be able to grab a lower level school for sure.  A BCS school won't even be an option, but depending on your NT run, you might be able to grab a nice mid-major.  Good luck!

Yes as everyone said you might be able to grab a D or D- school but that may not be worth moving up to you.

If you look at my Tiffin in Crum resume you can see how hard moving up to D1 to a place worth your time can be unless you just don't care about where you go.

Even after this season's final 4, the best schools I were eligible for was C- schools in terrible conferences, not even a good mid major job. The D1 process is strange. 6 seasons at the school 5 times in the NT, an elite 8 2 seasons ago and final 4 this season and no jobs that weren't awful.

i kind of want to move up, no matter how bad the div 1 school, and take it from there. should i not?

Just depends on what you are interested in doing.

A D and D- school is very hard to be competitive in D1. For starters if you are in a bad conference your lack of post season money will kill you, so you basically just have to wait around and get everyone the top schools didn't want because you have no chance in a battle.

There are diamonds in the rough and finding them is how you win, but if your goal is a good D1 job you are often better off waiting until you are eligible at least for a good mid major job and trying to win there to move up higher. The issue with trying to move up in low level D1 is that it is very hard to maintain being good season after season, so even if you build up slowly, 1 rebuilding year will drop you all the way back down.

For what it is worth I moved up to D prestige Davidson and I will admit it is extremely difficult to recruit with the big boys you have to find ways to win with the other guys. It is also extremely fun to see your RPI climbing. I was really excited to move up to D+ prestige and right now stand at 15-1 with a RPI of 54. I had two human coaches in the league but they all left for different reasons.... so no postseason money unless I make it.

Almost all the BCS human teams pass on recruits with questionable defense, so in a lower level D-1 conference with few human coaches, you can usually find guys who are pretty good in everything but defense and be very competitive in conference.  Then if you can win the conference 2-3 times in a row, you can build up your prestige and grab a better team.

That is what I did in Rupp when I went from CSU, Stanislaus (D-2, B) to IUPUI (D-1, D to C+) to Wisconsin (D-1 BCS, C).  It took 5 years at IUPUI and my first season at Wisconsin was 0-27 ... BUT ... I did make it to a BCS team, and Wisconsin has an A- Baseline, which is a good pickup as a C team.

One thing you can try to pay attention to is the "Baseline Prestige" of the team and you can pick up a team that is much lower than their "Baseline Prestige".  They will grow to "Baseline" fairly quick with just mediocre seasons.  See this link for team Baseline Prestiges.

Andrew, when I left our conference, I took the worst job in D1 (1-26 record the previous year), thinking that I could turn it like I had done in D3 and D2.  After 4 seasons, we have improved every season, but because I haven't made the post season we are still D- prestige.  I feel like I am making progress, but it is a long road when you have a low major team.
